    I've pre-ordered 2 small EVs. The FUV and the Aptera. It's a race to see who can deliver a vehicle first. There's pros and cons to both. I think of the FUV as a better motorcycle. The Aptera stands alone because it doesn't need charging! 600 mile range, all wheel drive, full solar for 38K? This might be the only real competition for Tesla if Aptera can boost production quickly. Time will tell. Great video thanks.

    If they’re successful, I’d seriously consider it. A super efficient EV with decent cargo space? It won’t be a family hauler for certain, but I’m far from that with where I am in life. Plus, if the Tesla charge port in their teasers actually indicates supercharger capacity, that would just be another plus. Also a $25,000 starting price is REALLY attractive for an EV. Overall, I sincerely hope that they succeed in this attempt!

    I so am ready for an electric vehicle that is functional AND something the common average person could actually purchase. Anything above $45,000 really is outside the purchase price of the majority of US households (regardless if it is petroleum or electricly powered). But this vehicle can be seriously considered and serve well as a 2nd car (which most households have). And for people who do not need to carry more than one other person on occasion this works perfectly.

    I think it's a well thought out vehicle. In Ohio it would be licensed as a motorcycle. I know because I have built and licensed a highway legal three wheeler here. Some comment that it needs 4 wheels or 4 seats or a bigger trunk etc... Until you build one yourself, you will never understand that any vehicle is a compromise of size, weight, shape, air drag, power, range, practicality, and efficiency. Increase one of those and the rest of them change too, usually for the worse.
    I am very skeptical that this car will make it to production, as beautifully planned as it is. It takes a huge amount of capital to start an auto company. The news is full of company's that make big media splashes and offer buy-ins to waiting lists, then quietly vanish from sight. ELIO Motors anyone? A better chance of success would be to partner with some one like Tesla, or even offer the car in kit form that the owner can assemble their self. I will withhold my deposit, wait and see if they can against all odds, pull this off. If they do, I will buy one. Thanks for sharing this story.

    • @n.brucenelson5920
      @n.brucenelson5920 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to look at their history. The first time they tried, their startup incubator asked them to bring on a automotive industry CEO with production experience when they were ready to build. First he wanted changes to the design, and then decided he didn't want to build the production ready car. He got the board to force the founders out of the company, and bet the future on getting a loan for a completely new 4 wheel car that never came through, and then liquidated the company.
      After cofounding and leading a lithium battery startup through an IPO, Chris Anthony discovered that the rights were available and bought Aptera out of liquidation. He reassembled key members of the original team, including his co-founder and the original designer in 2019. They did a clean sheet of paper new design, and had a fully functional prototype on the road in San Diego last December. - This is a hugely better showing than Tesla's beginning.
      I don't think they will risk losing control again. Any comparisons with Elio are completely superficial, both as to the car, and the track record of the founders.

      @@tigerseye73 They just announced closing another A round of funding of $4 million today. They are certainly on track at the moment. Their projected production capacity is only 10,000 vehicles per year by the end of 2022, so lead times are going to be long for quite a while. Instead of expanding production further, they will probably start putting resources into their follow on vehicles, such as a 4 wheel, 5 passenger sedan.

    With Munroe's chatting with them, i'd say they're legit with only a very small chance they aren't at this point.
    Pointing out the possibilities that they might be using Tesla stock parts is a big damn deal because OEM use of them is what would guarantee Tesla a consistent cash flow in supply, similar to ACDelco or other suppliers. It would long-term injure Aptera and make them "attached" to Tesla (similar to like a brand name for a company like GM) but it has been proven that Tesla's inverters are the most efficient on the market, and with the Aptera apparently using the skin of the vehicle as a radiator they need every percent.

    I think they are going with the 3 wheel design to avoid auto safety requirements. If you get in any kind of fender bender this thing looks like it would be about as safe as a motorcycle. Being wide i could see having a wheel sheared off pretty easily. I bought a model S in the first year of production and put 120,000 miles on it and traded it for a model 3 which we still own, I’m waiting for the pickup (deposit sent in the 2 day). This thing looks fun, an open top version might be fun.

      No, this is not correct, although it will help with things like replacing mirrors with cameras. The three wheel design and the width of the front track was the only way to get the cd=0.13 as low as it is. With front and rear crumple zones, front and side air bags, and a very strong passenger safety cage, this will test among the safer cars when the crash test ratings are in, shortly before production begins.

      Tesla is the leader in range for anything in production and is most efficient as well. Aptera will crush both but only because of the shape. You simply can’t get any more aerodynamic than this. But you also won’t be able to take your kids or friends anywhere in it either.

      @@CyberOwners The first Aptera vehicle is not intended to be a mass market car, just as the Tesla Roadster wasn't. In fact it is going to fill a similar role as for Aptera as the Roadster did for Tesla.
      The aerodynamic nature of the Aptera shape is by far the major contributor to the efficiency, but it is not the only one. The motors are also a small amount more efficient, and the rolling resistance is less. All of these factors multiply to achieve the end result.
      Couples and people who commute will be attracted to these cars, and find them far cheaper to operate than a Tesla.
      I hope this pushes Tesla into better customer service, quality control, and a saner right to repair policy. If it does, the entire industry will be improved.
