    Thank you for mentioning addressing the cause and not just the symptoms. So many doctors these days either don't know any better or just choose to ignore it completely until the patient goes away or dies.

      Bunion surgeries are very profitable especially when taking into account the patient will be back in a few years with another bunion afrer going right back to the narrow shoes that caused them.

    Thanks for all these alternative stretching tips, Dr. Tom. I will try them. Appreciate it as I don’t trust other podiatrists anymore after having gone through another podiatrist’s bunionectomy only recommendation, who did surgery on supposedly both feet (found out later he just just wanted to collect $ for the fake other foot), the bunion is back & painful.

    These exercises and stretches are what I learned to do by listening to my body. Foot doc recommended a joint “clean out” surgery to treat arthritis pain. I opted for all natural address of musculoskeletal issues. All related to foot and ankle pain. I also had tight calves. Everything is connected!

    13:57 is THE TRUTH. If you are only going to do one of these things do the stretching. Great video that explains WHY you have bunion - tight muscles!
    I had bunions on both feet and did all the things recommended to try to fix them, toe spacers, splints, insoles, wide shoes, nothing worked. Until I stretched! I stretched my glues, hamstrings, CALFS, rolled out the plantar fascia. These are the things that work! If you want to go above an beyond add some exercises to strengthen all those muscles. After 2+ years of A LOT of stretching and strengthening have no bunions, strong ankles and strong arches. It is possible.

    • @mbtvalli
      @mbtvalli 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rcooper1033 the arthritis is no laughing matter as you know. Podiatrist suggested a joint “ clean out” surgery to remove bony spurs that he said would give me pain relief for 5-7 years but would need to repeat surgery after that. The kicker for me was that I might have swelling for up to 6 months after surgery. Well that got me thinking about whether I wanted 6 months of little to no exercise after surgery. I decided it was not worth that kind of possible health setback. In the meantime I manage it as per above and do PT toe exercises and self massage. Also got tested for dairy sensitivity results indicated very high levels of inflammatory indicators. So far so good. I wish you all the best.

    This video was so informative. I've watched so many other videos that never explained this root cause. This video is extremely helpful. Thank you. It really helps me to understand why I had a small bunion for most of my life then in the past decade it has gotten worse. I believe now it got worse because I had/have hips issues, severe pain from a cyst in my spine. That is the side that my bunion is on and has become worse and now my second toe is affected. Thanks again for explaining about stretching.

    Hm, while I do various exercises for the thumb itself, I never really thought about stretching the calves and even less about hamstrings and glutes. With my left leg being shorter than my right one in both bones, I really should have done my homework here, thanks.
    One other crucially important thing that does not get mentioned much is absolute necessity of getting your BMI as close to normal range as you can manage. In the space of six months I went from 36.6 to 32.3 and like hell I'm stopping now, we're going into 27.5 at the very least with this shit. I mean holy shit, I looked in the mirror the other day and was dumbfounded when some fresh-faced cherub peered back! Weight loss _does_ shave off years, guys.
    The only problem is, diet restrictions are not enough, you _have_ to move for the process to go above snail pace.

Recently I had shingles on my right leg and it affected my nerves on that leg. I developed bunions soon after… now I’m making the connection. I will try the stretching and massage. The bunion splints are a nightmare! My feet only start hurting when I used them and you're absolutely right, they don´t do much. I use orthotics with arch support and transverse arch support that my podiatrist prescribed, good shoes, and stretches. My bunions haven't lessened but they haven't worsened over years, so I'm happy but not satisfied. I have bunions since I was like 10-11years old, now I'm 31. The doctor recommended surgery but I'm not sure if they won't reappear after the surgery. How can I know if I had fixed the underlying problems you mentioned if my bunions haven't lessened?

    I just loved your channel since I also suffered with bunions and wanted to have some informations about these.
    Is it natural that only one of my foot hurts sometimes? It hurts more if I have some errands to do and I always walk. 😔

    • @DrTomBiernacki

      More pressure can always make the foot hurt for sure, we usually do see one foot slightly tighter and worse than the other one

      There are over the counter orthotics that are cheaper and custom orthotics that are more like a Ferrari. I recommend get one to get your from point A to B first, then get a more expensive one if needed. Check the show notes below the video for some options.

    Feet over pronate because the tarsi sinus has collapsed. Before you try this or get lapiplasty (which is the best Bunion correction surgery) correct this problem with a HiPro Cure screw to keep the Tarsi Sinus open.

    Great info that it's a whole arch-, ankle-, knee-, hip- problem, not just the toe. Question re: the shoe stretcher device 9:23 If you stretch to make a bit more room for the bump, but the tapered toebox of the shoe still angles your toes together, doesn't that just give more space for the bunion knuckle to get pushed farther out?

    • @DrTomBiernacki
      @DrTomBiernacki  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow we really appreciate the kind words. great feedback like this is what really keeps us working hard to make better and more meaningful content. The answer is that the stretcher is not perfect but it can get rid of that extreme pain in some people, which is the goal.

    I don’t know if I missed it but I didn’t see any mention of wide toe box shoes. 🤔 I hardly ever wore heels only on special occasions. I noticed my bunion developing as I’ve been working standing up and walking 8 hours a day on sneakers that really are not built for a natural born foot 🦶 that it is not by any means narrow. Check babies foot prints they are all wide. While in the Island I grew up in I wore flip flops or barefoot and never had any problems. It all started after I began working and standing and walking in narrow sneakers all day long. So all of these suggestions are really good and I have done them all but having to wear same kind of narrow shoes will counter act all of it. My humble opinion based on experience. 🙂

    I am totally confused because I have been reading articles on the website for Correct Toes and they state that if you have a bunion, that you should wear flat shoes. Shoes that have a zero drop, are flexible and have a wide toe box. They show a variety of shoes on their site but they say you are not supposed to wear orthotics in the shoe. Also, since I have a problem with my second toe, which was operated on long ago for a hammertoe, to wear a metatarsal pad. Can someone help with this? Thank you.

    • @obxguy1
      @obxguy1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve been reading up on this as well as I have developed a big toe bunion recently. I think you can have a zero drop shoe and still have good arch support. That’s what I’m looking forward as well. I’m currently wearing brooks that have a 12 mm drop and recently upgraded to a good arch support. I am looking for a lower drop though

  • @terriliggett544

    Hello, my bunion is coming back after lapidus surgery two years ago. I have two pairs of new custom orthotics. One pair was designed to treat 2nd toe pain and metatarsalgia and it has a high dome in the middle arch. The other pair has a medial arch dome to treat pttd and pronation. I have a 3rd pair I bought OTC called Arch Rival that has a big toe groove. I don’t know which pair is going to help prevent the bunion from getting worse. The area of the bunion is red and sore, and the big toe is drifting towards the second toe. You can imagine how distressing this is. Since I live in CA, I cannot see you. Which orthotic do you think I should be wearing to stabilize the big toe joint.?

Any spacer/ stretcher I use doesn’t give a good enough stretch. Big toes have like a lollipop shape. Anyone else encounter this? Or any suggestions? Thnx

  • @ThatDollLoopie
    @ThatDollLoopie ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I'm going to be honest this just feels like slapping on a bandaid and not addressing the why people's feet collapse, I saw no mention of exercises that could improve the strength of intrinsic foot muscles. Yeah it will temporarily ease the problem but if you don't address the underlying issues then you will never recover. If you put a limb in a cast the muscles will atrophy from not being used, same thing is happening here when you use all this support cushioning and small toe box shoes, literally look up any barefoot health channels (for example the channel: barefoot strength) for a much better long term solution to bunions for most people

    • @Soulful_Healer_Ash
      @Soulful_Healer_Ash 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The issue is weakness in the calf, heal, and the postural footing on said foot. These can be repaired with shoes, orthotics, etc these can be solved and repaired. So yes he does express what can help and does get down to the underlying issues.
