I got out of the Army after 6 years in August 2001. I left service 3 weeks before 9/11. Talk about a gut check, imagine serving 6 years in mostly peace time besides Bosnia and Kosovo, and then our country was attacked right after I separated from service. The emotion of that time was incredibly intense. I was 25, and trying to start the next chapter in my life, but feelings of wanting/needing to return to the Army consumed me every minute of every day for a long time. Three days after the attack I attempted to drive to NY and help on the "pile", but turned around after the mayor of NYC said they were not allowing ANYONE into the city. Long story short, I did not return to the military, was not recalled, and to this day I live with a level of regret and guilt. My unit went to Afghanistan and Iraq twice. Main reason I did not go back voluntarily is because I was on a list to become a firefighter, and I did not want to mess that up. I've been a full time firefighter since 2003.
Nick you will miss service every time you hear the National Anthem, or feel the urge to be part of something big, part of history. You did your part, don't ever forget that. I hope you continue to find ways to fill that void.

If it makes you feel any better I’m on my 6th month in Kosovo and it was because of your rotations work that made this tour so easy.

Whenever I start to lose motivation your videos really help me out and I feel the fire inside of me start burning again. I appreciate it, man. Glad to see you being so successful out of the military. I’m leaving the army in three months and I hope I can keep the drive as much as you do. You’re an inspiration to us all.

Currently finishing my senior year of high school getting ready for my four years or rotc. This you tube channel has grown to be my all time favorite channel. Ive never seen anything like it, thank you for being a great role model and inspiration. I was 1 year old on September 11th 2001. And the next generation after me will be people who did not live through this time in history. Its good to remember and never forget.

Nick, I started watching your stuff over about a year and a half to two years ago. Your videos have been there for me in the good, but theyve also brought me back from the edge during the bad. Your dedication to everything you apply yourself to took me from the edge and inspired me to get back to pushing myself every day. Without the content you put out to inspire, educate and entertain I don't know where I'd be, probably half the man I am now. Big up Bare brothers + Steph, keep at it !

Although I'm not American, I too joined the military and in 2010 deployed to Tarin Kowt Afghanistan with the Australian Air Force. I met so many amazing people over there including US soldiers, sailors and Airmen and women. I'd do it again tomorrow.
I'm heading to the States on Friday and plan on buying a vet a beer or 10 if I find one to just say thanks.

Like others have said it comes down a lot to chance. I had friends who joined the army one year earlier than me and and never went anywhere their 4 years. Where as I joined one year later and went to South Korea for 9 months, it’s only a rotation not a deployment but that just shows you that unless there is volunteer options to go to the Middle East than you may be shit out of luck
