It was a weird time to become a Metallica fan. I was in Jr. High in 1996 and I had a buddy who was in to Metallica - I was in to Weird Al. I was used having the next song on the record sounding completely different than the previous one since Weird Al parodied all genres of music. We were at his house one day playing some Super Nintendo when he decided to put the Black Album on as background music. To me, every song sounded the same, but it was the intro to "Don't Tread On Me" that caught my attention because I had watched "West Side Story" before, so I knew the song they took that from. I thought, "What heavy metal band would have the balls to use a melody from a old musical???" It was then the riff from "Through the Never" that made me realize this band is awesome! I went to Wal-Mart and started flipping through their discography and when I found the Black Album I put on their headphones and scanned the UPC and started listening. The chorus to "Enter Sandman" started playing and I instantly recognized it from Weird Al's "Polka Your Eyes Out" so that was the album I first bought and after that I became a Metallica fan. I then bought Load and ReLoad a few months later, so the early-to-mid 1990's was my era.
In my opinion Metallica did what they were doing since their biggest selling metal album Metallica, but at the same time Load was a little bit different because their music was placed in alternitive category knowing that the heavy music was not the same anymore and Load debut at #1 on the billboard charts in 1996.

The problem with this situation is who was better was it Metallica or Pantera and the answer was Metallica. Metallica had three #1 albums in the 90's, winning awards, and being the most successful tour band of all time. And around the same time Pantera was not the same band until Philip overdose on heroin on stage from Dallas, Texas and dealing with his garbage on the road supporting The Great Southern Trendkill album by not telling his band members what was going on with him during their tour in the late 90's.
You can do what you want of course, but they are so hypocritical in this era. You're named Metallica but you don't want to play metal. They start wearing makeup yet they constantly mocked bands throughout the previous decade.
Load and Reload are still metal, they're just more of a 70s metal-inspired sound, mixed with then-modern alternative. Which shouldn't be that surprising since it was Metallica and GNR's heavier sound that set the stage for grunge in the first place.

While I definitely preferred them with the longer hair, I can understand wanting to cut it after like 15 years or something of long hair, especially when that really went out of fashion in the 90s. Cliff Burton would have kicked himself out Metallica by this time. I remember this time we were early 20's and by this time we had stopped listening to these clowns . My oldest daughter who is 15 loves old Metallica and always asked me what happened with them . All I ever had to do was show here a picture of Cliff Burton and let her know that man was the heart and soul of Metallica . I try to convince myself James was just drunk during these years .
