I still think that arguably the biggest missed opportunity in the DCAU is Lois never finding out Clark is Superman or them never officially having a relationship. This film which isn't even canon to the DCAU is the closest we got.
That's why DCAMU Lois's and Clark romance is the best one out of all animated and most of live action depiction. There you've got Lois who's actually loves Clark first (even almost gets herself in a catfight with Diana Prince because of Clark) she without hesitations almost sacrifices herself in the fight with Doomsday just to give Superman a small chance to escape, helps out with Cyborg Superman, helps to lead human resistance against Darkseid, and overall Lois was shown to be more of a good partner, and a great fit for Clark specifically, not Superman, which I think most of the versions fails to convey.
@@user-ManofStyle1 I'd never called the DCAMU Lois and Clark relationship the best in animation or ever compare it with the best depictions of their romance. It had some nice moments towards the end but before Death of Superman it was never even hinted that Clark even liked Lois the scene with her and Diana was all she got before that film. In general going with the Diana and Clark ended up being very dated and of the time. Some nice moments towards the end of that universe don't suddenly make it the best depiction of their relationship. In general that universe was a big disappointment with the only a few good projects.
@ Wanna know what I concider a biggest missed opportunity? Is to have Batman hitting on Lois with Superman doing nothing. situation gets resolved by itself with Lois learning that Bruce Wayne is Batman, and no reason was given why she no longer wants to be with him when she was almost ready to marry him. While Superman himself, didn't tried to persuade her, didn't tried show his true feelings, he was just standing there "like, whatever", the guy didn't tried to fight for his woman's affection, what the hell?
The art style here was originally a tribute to the old Max Fleischer theatrical cartoons of the 1940s. Those 19 cartoons really leaned into the idea that Lois was reckless, something that would become a big part of her character in the silver age.
I did not even know this movie existed. Also non Snarky Mercy confirms for me a thought I've had that the Snarky Mercy almost humanizes Lex, because she gives him lip that I feel he wouldn't tolerate from just about anyone else, so he must have had some small glimmer of thoughtfulness for her. iI mean he'd still sacrifice her in two hearbeats, but he might try to think of another way with the first one.
This is like X-Men Legends using the Ultimate Universe designs, they're using the designs that look interesting, and do whatever with it. Lance Hendricksen fits the best out of recast, Powers Boothe is having fun, even with how jarring this design is displaying glee, and Mercy Graves going full Lex fangirl after all her development in the DCAU is... Something, but at least she doesn't get shot in the face!
I love the title “Superman: Brainiac Attacks”, it feels like a 50’s monster movie like “Invasion of the Body Snatches” or “Earth vs The Flying Saucer” lol
Funny how in the movie where's Superman's love life is a main story(after brainiac attacking of course)yet it doesn't have any resolution. Jimmy gets a girlfriend by the end and he had with her less than a one scne together, while Clark was trying to tell Lois multiple times and we end with nothing.
Is anyone else thinks that is really wierd that in DCAU Clark never actually even tries to go out with Lois? He kinda flirts her as Superman, but that's it. And Lois herself is never given a reason why she isn't interested in Clark while she was dating Luthor before and she almost decideds to marry Bruce Wayne just because, like, why not try with Clark. He wasn't a dorky whimp like in Donner movies, he was shown to be quite a charming guy, so what's the reson if Lois so eager to even get with guy she knew for few days and not with her colleague, Is DCAU Lois has a thing for rich people or she doesn't like guys with glasses?
Never seen it I’ll have to fix that me and my kids LOVE Superman! I’ve seen the Superman animated series with my kids and nothing beats seeing them be excited and love Superman! It made me smile on a nostalgic level but also on a proud dad level!
Because this movie was rushed into production to meet the deadline to sync up with Superman Returns, there was not enough lead time to redesign the characters, which would have avoided the comparisons to the Timmverse because the change in tone didn’t fit well with the animated series designs. I think people would’ve been more accepting of this movie had it not looked like the animated series along with the unfortunate voice miscasting.
When I saw this, I did not know it was not intended to stand alone. As such, I can best sum up Braniac Attacks in one word: Whiplash. I can't divorce what I'm seeing with … everything else. Lois doesn't seem like Lois, she seems like Lois acting (badly) like she's been hit with some cartoon love potion. Mercy, Luthor, and Brainiac are all just so wrong. Jimmy … might as well not be there I guess? The only thing that seemed to be taken seriously was Clark's dilemma about whether or not to tell Lois who he was. And even that was frustrating in the end. Sound design is also extremely important to my enjoyment of something-and here it's just wrong, consistently. If at least Clark had finally told Lois who he was it might've had some redeeming value, but it hasn't even got that going for it. Instead it's got nothing going for it except being an example of a shameless cash grab.
I suppose you could canonise the lex if you pretend he and grodd had a mindswap ( like the great brain robbery) and he trying to ruin lex's reputation!
I’ve never seen this movie before, because most people say it’s skippable and unimpressive, but it seems way more in depth and psychological than I realized, it actually looks really interesting and creative
Yeah I think I'm pretty much done with listening to others review stuff before I do and it putting me off. Too many things lately I've watched afterwards and enjoyed even if others didn't.
It's weird how we had the "Bat Embargo" at the time to "prevent confusion," yet THIS was allowed to come out as it was? I literally thought, seeing the commercials for it as a kid, that this was a new movie for the DCAU Superman I knew. When I finally saw it on TV, I was like, "Wtf?" Hell, I'd even argue the "Lex matching Gene Hackman" thing didn't even work on me, since I didn't see the Donner films until AFTER I saw Returns, and Lex acts a bit more like his DCAU counterpart in that movie. But that's a whole other rant I could go on.
I remember watching this once when it aired on TV. Can't say I liked it very much. It seemed rather tame, even compared to other DCAU shows, and over just didn't grab me. Even if it isn't canon to the overall animated universe at the time, it's not something I was eager to re-watch. I totally forgot there was a girl crushing on Jimmy. I guess when the designs give basically all the women the exact same body shape, "she's got glasses" is the best excuse to initially reject her.
They should have had him one hit KO the first Braniac Drone. Like he comes out, Lex smiles in relief and Clark just bulldozes straight through it and goes to the hospital, almost without noticing, to deliver the cure to display how urgent it was. Clark usually plays with his food so to see him destroy the drone without a thought would be really intense. Then you can have her get half the cure until the second Brainiac destroys it, she shows no sign of life and Superman loses it in anguish with her reacting to it finally in midfight, only waking up as Superman is apologizing to her. That would have been a better climax.
As always, clever and insightful. Always thought this was a good Superman animated film that kind of transitioned the DCAU from series to films. The look & feel
I've seen "Superman: Brainiac Attacks" and wrongfully assumed that it'd be DCAU canon. I'm glad it isn't, because despite the characters having their DCAU designs, "Brainiac Attacks" is a completely original story separate from the DCAU. If only it had slightly better execution in terms of plot.
It’s just very hard to get around the characters acting so differently from the DCAU versions when they are drawn almost exactly like them. Made the film almost uncanny valley for me.
Im a bit mixed on this animated project as I do love the idea of Superman going to such lengths to attempt to save Lois by fighting God knows what in the Phantom Zone, however I am disappointed they didn't commit to having Clark reveal his identity to Lois as that was one if the biggest missed opportunities of the DCAU if you ask me and I feel like it wouldve been a cathartic way to bring the characters together. Btw Im not sure why they couldn't bring back Clancy Brown as Lex and while I dont want to disrespect the voice actor in this project, but Lex kinda acts more like Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor from the Christopher Reeve Superman movies
Between My Adventure with Superman and Harley Quinn, there have been a lot of Brainiac lately. And there's possibility of even more, so he might be overused soon.
20:41 Your comment about filler plots does have me thinking about any filler storylines, particularly within the DCAU, and whether or not there are any filler storylines that aren't essential but are either entertaining or enrich the main story in some way. The JLU episode, "To Another Shore" is one the comes to mind since the main story is Wonder Woman stopping the Legion of Doom from getting the Viking prince corpse so Gorilla Grodd can replicate his immortality. Throughout the episode Martian Manhunter is grappling with his disassociation from humanity and his growing isolation and after recusing the Viking Prince he realizes that if he's going to live his life then he needs to find some connection and decides to resign from the Justice League. This was initially supposed to be an Aquaman episode but due to the "Aquaman embargo" they had to switch to Wonder Woman as the main character and had they had gone with their original idea they wouldn't have included the Martian Manhunter storyline. It's a great Wonder Woman episode and I think the Martian Manhunter side plot really enhances the episode and makes it better than what they had originally planned.
I just skipped this film since I wasn't really sure if it was necessary or added to the Superman TAS. It is nice to see that Lois and Clark have a better setup for their romance compared to the actual series, but I honestly have no desire to see it after the show not really care for that relationship (beyond their friendship). Edit: God, Jimmy sounds even more like danny phantom than he did in the show. Yes, I know it's the same voice actor, but still.
Clancy Brown not voicing Lex Luther is pure sacrilege. This other voice actor just makes me squirm when I hear his voice. Next to Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luther on Smallville Clancy Brown is hands-down, the best Lex Luther.
This movie, this movie. It ether needed a different art style to make it clear it wasnt in the DCAU or needed to actually be part of it. Using that art style was a mistake
Really wish they went with if they couldn't get the DCAU voice actor the character gets a redesign like really go this is an DCAU adjacent universe. Well at least it pairs well with nonDCAU Batman Harley movie.
I DESPISED it. Watched it when it came out and couldn´t handle the changes and then just once more cause I had to for a site. Yes, later on one learns the background for it. That being said I still don´t get why they couldn´t change the designs just enough (like Superman Doomsday where it still has Bruce Timm DCAU style but changed just enough that one can tell it isn´t part of the universe) and they shouldn´t have the same voice actors. If it weren´t for that the movie would be "somewhat" enjoyable.
It's been years since I watched this but I remember kind of hating it. It really bothered me that the animation was in the timverse style but the movie didn't fit the continuity. Also lex with grods voice was really distracting. I think this movie would have really Benefited from a unique animation of its own and maybe a bit of a tidy up in the script or possibly just the direction.
0:33 ...jesus Harvey christ...I'm dying to see his Superman and am excited for it to be great if not good, but shit man, I HATE that this might means that the comics are going to become nothing but support for the movies. If James Gunn does that, I'm done with with DC completely and am heartbroken; I have my old comics, let the kids play their new toys.
It doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. It just seems like DC is going to focus on more Superman comics, which is better than what they normally do. BATMAN, BATMAN, MORE BATMAN!
I've seen this movie a few times. I really wish it was actually good. But it's not. There are parts that I really enjoy. But overall, it's just so very disappointing.
