BMW R1250GS Adventure

  • BMW keeps moving the benchmark with their boxer motors, and now they've really done it with the 1250. A fact that even Donovan, a long-time BMW boxer sceptic, has to concede. The Adventure is the big daddy in the BMW adventure artillery, made even better with the backdrop of the mighty Drakensberg mountains.

    Keep your feet on the bike mate, at that speed and with that weight you don't want to use your leg to keep the bike up.

    I drove the R1200GS Adventure... not the 1250 yet... but let me tell you... it is one of the greatest bikes I have ever test driven... and I am not a BMW rider... I am in the opposite corner riding Goldwings... so I am assuming the people who have given thumbs down must be BMW haters or don't like new technology... not that everybody prefers them... but you can't objectively give thumbs down on that bike... it is just amazing what BMW Motorrad cranks out of the factory... especially such a versatile motorcycle like the R1250GS

    Nice review to watch as usual.
    But dude... not to be pedant... but "making the same hp throughout the rev range" is impossible :=))) u meant torque ;)

    • @kevinmobile
      @kevinmobile 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Quite right...with power and torque NOT being mutually exclusive.
      To be fair, the author said he didn't really understand about these things so perhaps safest to steer clear of the key relationship between power, torque and rpm in the video.

    • @andersadler
      @andersadler 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes, he was definitely wrong about hp there. But BMW has more hp up to 7000 rpm than KTM 1290 has. From 7000 rpm and up KTM wins. So if you don't rev more than 7000 rpm you will have more hp on a BMW all day...
      Example: Both has about 115hp at 7000 rpm. But at 5000 rpm, KTM has 74hp and BMW has 84hp.

    The 1250 GSA HP is the 6th bike and 3rd GSA I’ve owned. You right it just keeps getting better. Everything about the bike is brilliant.
    I use it for, commuting, and touring on and off the tar.
    Only negative I can think of the bike is that it is heavier on fuel than my 2018 GSA.
    And to those that what to climb boulders and do “proper” off road - I would buy a proper off road bike if I wanted to do that. IMHO no bike in this class is suitable for that.

    I have been wanting a r1250Gs or KTM Super Adventure S ever since both were released. I literally just watched this video and have put a deposit on the GS Exclusive. Thank you for the review and validating my decision. I pick it up in few hours !
    The other thing that swayed me was BMW vs KTM after sales service here in Australia. Have an issue with a KTM locally and it’s frustrating to work with the dealers. BMW ave a better warranty and service reputation than KTM here in Australia.

    The price being No. 1, 2 the spokes come loose and the manager of bmw told me this, ive seen the rear shock have to come out because it failed for some reason and this was a 2018 model

    The motorbike heats too much on right side where the catalyzer is installed...it is vary bad for the right leg and for the passenger foot...reallyit can cook a chicken with the heat!! BMW does not correct this heavy deffect, and all dealers are lying telling that they have not heard such claim, but most of the users of GS 1250 ADV are suffering for excessive heat released on righr side of the bike, mainly on highway at a speed of 130-140 km/h and with temperature above 30 Celsius...it is a shame that such expensive and “modern” bike comes with heavy problem lime this one that I am mentioning.....it cooks your right leg...a shame!!!!

    Fucking toxic commenters. The bike is the best of what it is. I'm trading a Ducati multistrada for one. Everyone (including me) hates the price. The weight and balance are better then any other bike its size. The electronics are better then my Ducati. The seat and comfort are better than a triumph. Hate all you want, doesn't change the facts.

    My major criticism on all the new GS’, is that standard TFT screen. From my understanding/research is that it’s standard on all the new GS’. Great piece of technology, but you’ll need to fork out about R16k for a BMW helmet and the BMW intercom system to get full benefit/actual use out of it (Apple car play, make and receive phone calls through their hands free system etc?). Why is it that in SA, they didn’t offer it with normal dials as standard? Then you can order the TFT screen as an option?

    Yup, BMW does have a beautiful Adventure bike. With 80+% of this bike’s life traveling the slab BMW absolutely needs to put more than a scooter horn on this beast. It’s pitiful. A 120db Denali Sound Bomb will now need to be installed. While they’re at it on a premium model might even add electric seats and windscreen too. Then you’re approaching perfection.

    Big gas tanks are not about staying on the bike with no break until the tank is empty, its about being able to get to the next gas station in remote areas where people are supposed to use bikes like this. Most just go to Starbucks so fuel capacity is not an issue and a smaller tank will do.
    Its annoying to always hear people say bikes with over 130 hp are not as good as bikes with over 140 hp. This bike is not made for drag racing or super bike competitions. Its made for long distance touring in places where the roads might not be good enough to go 80 km per hour. As they said dont just look at the numbers, ride it and see how the power is delivered. Himilayans and Kawasaki KLRs cross the world with much much less horse power. How did people ever drive before when bikes were under 100 hp? Was it even possible?
    My fear, besides the cost, is what you do in remote places when the bad drive shafts fail or the electronics break down and there is no Bring My Wallet dealer within 1000 miles. These are not simple, easy to fix bikes.

    Great vid and review. I just love Donovanˋs pure emotion and honesty describing the gsa, especially the part about bringing out the tiger ! ...and thatˋs what motorcycling is all about..emotion. Whether you like the muscle of a ktm or prefer the good manners of a gsa, itˋs all fine, the bike has to fit the rider, both physically ( i have short legs 2) and mentally. At age 62, i prefer the manners and comfort of a gs. I currently ride the R1200R LC, great allarounder. Thanks Donovan, keep up the good work...p.s. wish i was in SA, Berlin ist soo grey~Merry Christmas !
