    Like many I agree, once you've owned and ridden the modern GS's there's nothing which competes with the build quality, design, comfort, characters (Dyno + Enduro) and all round competence. I've had them since 2018 first a 1200 GSA Rally (24K miles) and now the 1250 GSA Rally, and have ridden the pack (KTM SA 1290, V2 and V4 MS and 1200 Tiger Explorer) yet still come back to the GS. I also rode it for 2 days commuting (120 each day) this week in -5 degrees and it's such a confidence inspiring bike; if you have the budget and aren't put off by the height, get one!!!

    • @DSR1YT
      @DSR1YT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luckily im not vertically challenged so the height is no issue for me, I was thoroughly impressed with the weight displacement of the bike as well, makes a big difference on slow speed handling with that engine weight low down. Great bikes, that's all I can say, and it seems you would agree. Ride safe.

    Thanks for the ride, Sir. I have a 1250GS ( not A...the skinny one ) with all the extras.
    I can take a comfortable 500 km. day trip with the wife and luggage. And then drop all the weight and have a comfortable super moto for a blast on the back roads and through the forest.
    Been riding since 1987 and had more than 25 bikes ( race bikes, super nakeds, etc ). This is by far my best "overall investment". No chain, no mechanical issues, quality all way through, excellent dealer service...and that smooth low down torque and adjustable suspension♥
    As mentioned in other comments...can´t wait to see the 1300.
    ( You can order the GSA lowered 5 cm. from the factory )

      Glad you liked the video, it was a great bike to ride, i wanted it to last longer than 2 hours. I like having the ability of doing long distance rides but like you’ve mentioned, then being able to strip it down and take it up some green lanes. Will be interesting to see how they have improved the 1250 for the 1300 at the tail end of this year.

    If you do get one, time your purchase carefully because it's the 100th anniversary of BMW Motorrad, and they're due to bring out a new 1300GS (plenty of spy shots online) - which means they'll discount the 1250 to shift stock.

    As already said, the 1300 is coming, but this also means good deals to be had on the 1250. Personally, I'll only get the new model after they've been selling for at least 2 years since huge improvements are made as lessons are learned during this time. A word of caution though, once you've gotten used to riding the big GS (given the location of its width it filters traffic better than much smaller bikes, you'll be amazed. It's like the designers put it in-between two cars and moulded the bike into that space) it completely ruins just about every other motorcycle out there for you meaning it's pretty much the end of the line as far as your bike experimentation journey. Might not sound like a big deal, but it is.

      Haha i like that, its the end of the road for me. I can take that, I’m lucky enough to ride some of the biggest names of bikes throughout the year without paying for them, perks of the channel, so if i have to pay for the big dog bike to sit in the garage and be there ready for when i go touring etc then i am happy with that. Interested to see how the new 1300 compares to the 1250 though and also what its reliability will be like for BMW.

  • @cedricpieterse7280
    @cedricpieterse7280 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You can not go wrong with a GS. There is a reason why they outsell all the others.
    I am on my third GS. I had the R850 GS 1988model then the R1150 GS and now I have the air cooled R1200 GS 2008 model.
    I love the character and reliability of the boxer motors. I also have a 2017 R nineT for shorter fun rides.
    I was going to upgrade to the 1250GS but my old 1200 hexhead weighs in at 226kg, so a lot lighter than the newer ones and that does make it easier to handle on rough stuff.
    The older air/oil cooled bikes, as well as the R nineT are very easy to work on and service. I do all the maintenance myself so this is a big consideration for me when I buy a bike. That said, I also do maintenance on my mate's R1250GS and it's not difficult to work on them either, just a bit more plastic to remove. With the GS911 it's a breeze to work on the CanBus electronics. As far as reliability goes, I find that BMW is not bad. Sure, things do go wrong but if you look after the bike, and do regular maintenance it's better than most bikes out there.
    I would not touch KTM with a barge pole...

    • @DSR1YT
      @DSR1YT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lots of people with these barge poles :). Maybe i need to get my own. Like you’ve said, BMW will have their own issues with their bikes, but its also down to how well they handle the repairs and their customer service that I’m hearing is a lot better than KTM, can’t speak from experience just yet with BMW but hopefully soon i can :)

    The gs1250 is a good bike the hp gs probably the pick of the range. New model coming though.
    Gs bmws have a chequered history though so a 13 model to be avoided (engine paint falls off rear esa shock fails and flywheel too light etc)
    The 01 to 07 had the appalling servo brakes abs1 which has to be bypassed.
    Only real problem with the 1250 is poor gearshift although better than the 1200s and its a bit boring really. Like buying a lexus jeep....

    • @DSR1YT
      @DSR1YT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At the minute I'll take a boring bike that works than an exciting bike that sits in the garage. Like buying jap bikes, you're buying reliability and not an exciting bike with character. obviously my own opinions and everyone sees it differently.

    I've tried all the adventure bikes from Aprilia to Yamaha. Test rode a 1200 then 1250GSADV but couldn't see the point of all the extra weight as we stop every hundred or so miles (we tour a lot as well as competing in the RBR) so we plumped for a GS1250 Exclusive back in 2019. Me and the wife did 30.000 magical miles on it in two years. Traded that this time last year for another GS1250, this time a Triple Black. They are the ultimate all round bike, they'll tour, off-road and scratch. As a road bike the GS is hard to beat for me and the wife. The heated grips have many more settings than three, you have to go into the menu and there are more riding modes too than you stated. I just ride in road mode all the time and leave the suspension on auto as it compensates well enough with either more or less loading.

    • @DSR1YT
      @DSR1YT  ปีที่แล้ว

    I sat on one of those at the factory in Munich. Very tasty. However, I ride a Suzuki 400 4 wheeler and a Kawasaki 250 dirt bike in the mountains of Wyoming where I live. If you’re serious about riding this beautiful beast off road, I would suggest you ask yourself, can I pick this bike up alone? Because it’s not a matter of if but when you will drop the bike in the dirt, mud, snow, etc. Hit a rut or a rock wrong and down you go. It happens. I’m not Hercules so I would have to call for help. I think those are great road bikes. I would ride it on a well graded gravel road. But for me, a smaller, lighter bike is easier to manage in the dirt. And I can pick it up alone. Keep the shiny side up!😎

    • @DSR1YT
      @DSR1YT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed Bill, I wouldn't want to do anything too technical on this as im no Jarvis, but this would be perfect on some hard pack gravel roads which luckily there are plenty of those just over in Wales not to far from me. Let's see if it makes its way into my garage or not.

    Just a point…re Nav 6 bracket. BMW now sell a phone adapter which fits into the cradle and locks your phone in. It’s expensive, circa £200, but I guess they assume premium brand = premium prices. I mention it because the navigation on the BM Connected app, in my opinion is better than Waze. I use the Connected app with my new style RT. When I deviate off a route, it reroutes and recalculates immediately. It takes Waze 5 or more seconds to recalculate, or even recognise you hanged the route. Now the other thing is, the maps are fully stored on the phone, so phone signal isn’t an issue. Given that there are multiple military satellites keeping the GPS signal locked, the phone cradle is expensive, but had I bought a GSA (I chose the RT) it’s what I would use. The Connected app’s latest version is very stable.

    • @DSR1YT
      @DSR1YT  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip Alberto, I've seen similar options where you get a phone mount that sits in the original craddle, it has 2 usb outputs on the side and is powered via the BMW cradle so no extra cables required other than the one into the phone. I still also like my quad lock mount with its wireless charging capabilities. I love having multiple different options for mounts and navigators. Ride safe.

      @@DSR1YT It’s my pleasure. We all know riding bikes isn’t that cheap a hobby/transport. Of course we never tell our wives/g/fs of the real cost of them.
      I managed to find a BMW dealer who has a monthly service plan for bikes. I’m projected to do 20k miles a year, and I pay £76 a month for 60k servicing over 3 years. The standard BMW plan that most dealers offer is useless. The only problem is, the dealer is in Lancashire. However, my first service since getting the bike is being done in early April and I’ll be tootling round the lakes whilst waiting for my bike. The dealer is Bowker Motorrad near Preston. I bought one, the bike you are riding was the bike actual one I rode before buying. I bought a GSA for going back to 2 up touring. I like it but don't love it. In forty years of riding for me in terms of wind noise its the noisest bike I have ever owned and yes I ride with earplugs and a Shoei Neotec 2. My previous bike was a Speed Twin 1200 to my GSA and it was quieter at motorway speeds in terms of wind noise than the GSA . I not alone with this issue, I'm 6ft 1 so not really tall, I'm still looking for a solution.

      Hi Lee, I feel I can't honestly reply to this comment due to realising after my ride that the current screen on that bike was the GS screen, not the GSA. But I was impressed with the wind protection of the GS screen. Im also 6'1", but we might have different length torsos, as this will effect how high up our heads sit. Maybe it's worth looking at those attachment screens that sit on the top. Never tried one, but you see them around quite a lot. Might be something to look at. Ride safe.

    Hi folks. I've been looking at GS for some time and am coming from an S1000R. Usual question : Does the GS feel sluggish in gear, and has it got enough power? Sorry to ask such obvious questions, but it's a large investment to find out it's not quite what I want. Size, comfort, panniers, and riding positions are all perfect though.

      @DSR1YT  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No question is a stupid question mate.
      The boxer engine is certainly different from the inline engine. You will notice the difference. But by no means does that mean the GS/GSA is a slow bike. If you want it to it can get a shift on.
      Are you close to a dealership where you can get on a decent length demo ride ?

    • @exmoorfarmer4880

      @DSR1YT Cheltenham is closest to me, but I won't get one for long enough. I would like to take a blast down to Exmoor and cover motorways and A roads. TBH, I think I will just take the plunge as the bike is going to be way more capable than me anyway! The most difficult decision is the colour scheme as the red and grey look great, as do the BMW colours, but I suspect I will gor for triple black. Thanks for the channel and thanks for answering.

  • @couttsy222
    @couttsy222 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That doesn't look like a standard GSA screen. I have a 2019 1250GSA and the top of the screen flares out, rather than in. Unless there is a difference between the UK spec and Australian spec but you guys would need the better screen, I would've thought! After 60,000kms (and 85,000kms on the 1200 before it with the same screen), I can honestly say it's the best I've ever ridden behind. Enough protection for the cold and rain but small enough not to be a barn door.

    • @DSR1YT
      @DSR1YT  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct but I didn't find this out till after recording, I had noticed once inside the dealer and asked the question. The screen on that demo bike was a GS screen, smaller and different shape than the stock GSA screens. The believe someone took the demo bike for a test ride and swopped out the screen with their own bikes screen. They hadn't realised till some time after.
      But even still, this GS screen was really good, but I can imagine how much better the GSA screen is just by looking at the size of it. Glad you are enjoying the GSA family. ride safe.

      Thanks for the comment Benny. I get where you are coming from, and if I was just buying a 'Sunday' ride bike, it probably wouldn't be a GS, not that you can't ride it spiritedly, because I can confirm the front end does come up on one :).
      In the last 3 weeks alone ive ridden the XR, GSA, MT10 and the S1000r, perks of having the channel, I don't really need a Sunday ride bike in my garage, I get all the fun I need from making the videos.
      What I need is something with good luggage and that is capable of the touring stuff when me and Zoe go away to Europe, along with that, having the luggage when Zoe is making a video means we don't need to carry a daysack with all the camera kit in, we just shove it in the bags and ride on.

      Damn straight it’s enough. Not that long ago and a bike with more than 135 hp and 105 ft lbs of torque would be a super bike (actually that wouldn’t have all that torque 🤷‍♂️). It’s like road cars these days with 600 hp…WTF are you going to do with it? We are just desensitized to high horsepower stats. My other bike is a GTR1400 (Concours 14 here in a North America). No slouch with the right hand cranked. Other than in a straight line, I would hazard to guess that I am just as fast, or faster, in the twistiest, on my R1250GS. And certainly grinning just as much. The GS handles so much lighter, is so balanced and brakes very well. I can spend a lot longer in the saddle with less fatigue and without a sore ass. And guess what? When the asphalt ends I can switch to Enduro Pro and have a another type of giggles in the dirt. Enough fun for weekend riding you ask? Hell yeah!

      I have finally got rid of it yes, I also went for a 2019 1250 GSA, loving it so far, a bits to change to make it ideal for me but that will come over time. Im not a big fan of the DCT bikes, tried the NT1100 last year with DCT and it didn't blow me away. I actually took out the 2023 Africa Twin (video dropping this coming Monday), I found getting back on to my GSA a big difference in the low end grunt / torque of the GSA compared to the AT, also the AT definitely has some vibes due to its engine. Yes the vibes , I also noticed that with the AT , in the handlebars mainly but a quieter engine with a better exhaust note , the seat on the AT is also far less comfortable, 1hr is plenty to be sitting on it i had mine for almost 12 months, I thought the GS1250 would be the natural upgrade but sadly I'm not sure it is ,
      After the smoothness of the DCT I'm finding it very hard going back ,

      I really think as regards to turbulence your body shape makes a difference, I am almost 6 foot but a regular leg 31 " not 32 but I have a long back , which is where I get my height ,
      What this means is I SIT TALLER on the bike whereas another 6 foot guy who may be a shade taller than me standing, will be smaller when seated so the full screen may be too tall for him !!
      Remember when talking about screen height your actual height means nothing!!
      As regards to changing your bike , if you have the DCT DONT CHANGE , it will piss you off , the power difference is ???? And only in any way noticeable when 2 up and loaded with luggage ,

      I've had BMWs since 1984 (as well as other brands in there as well) and have bought GS/GSAs six times (OK, one of those purchases was buying the same bike back again....). My R1150GS has done 200,000kms now, two other 1150GSs were bought to tour the UK and Europe at different times, so about 20-25,000kms for those; my R1200GSA LC did 85,000kms before I sold it and my current 1250GSA has nearly 60,000kms on it. My wife has had three BMWs as her most recent bikes (F800R; R1200R LC and now R1250R -- approx 120,00kms across those). Apart from the L/H switchblock on the R1200GSA failing at about 75,000kms (easily replaced with a S/H unit), the bikes have been faultless. Any warranty issues (minor recalls and a dud battery) are dealt with by BMW dealers easily, willingly and courteously and without the same sort of issues that DSR has had to put up with from KTM.
