The FUNERAL of ANNE OF CLEVES | What happened when royalty died in Tudor England | History Calling

  • The FUNERAL of ANNE OF CLEVES, fourth wife of Henry VIII and often remembered as the Flander’s Mare (something Henry never called her) took place on 4 August 1557 at Westminster Abbey, two and a half weeks after her death at the age of 41 at her home, Chelsea Manor in London. Many of the extended royal family during this era died under a cloud, often being executed for real or imagined crimes and with no state funeral to send them on their way, but of the four wives Henry discarded, Anne was the only one who lived out her days in comfort and on good terms with her former husband and his successors. Her funeral therefore showed what happened when royalty died in Tudor England and the individual wasn’t in disgrace. Anne’s send-off was a grand affair, fit for a former Queen and a woman, who, at the time of her death, was the third woman in England, after Queen Mary I and her half-sister, Elizabeth Tudor. In this latest addition to my six wives of Henry VIII playlist, today on History Calling, we’re going to delve into this episode in Tudor history to learn what Anne’s funeral was like and what it can tell us about the woman herself, particularly about whether Anne of Cleves was Protestant or Catholic. We’ll look at her last will and testament to see what she requested be done with her remains and at a contemporary description of the lying in state and funeral arrangements of the only one of Henry’s wives to be buried in the Abbey.

      The more I hear about Anne , I suspect that Henry secretly cared about her and recognising her youth and naivety did not wish her to be embroiled in spiteful English royal politics. In short, Henry did her a huge favour.

    • @jasperhorace7147
      @jasperhorace7147 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Maybe, she had no axes to grind in England. Unlike Anne Boleyn, she wasn’t a religious reformist. Probably, too, having limited English, especially at the beginning, which coincides with her time with Henry, most of what she said was probably ignored anyway. Her whole experience during the time as Henry’s wife must have been quite humiliating, especially amongst the worldly, sophisticated ladies of the court, so she probably didn’t feel inclined to raise her head above the parapet anyway. I imagine everyone, including Henry regarded her as of little consequence, which to probably accounts for some of her luck in surviving. Remember too, she was a foreign aristocrat and that likely meant she needed more diplomatic handling by Henry and his advisers.

    I think I read that Anne's brother was quite difficult and she had probably learned to maneuver around him during her life. She managed to get far away from him by marrying Henry, use her knowledge of dealing with narcissistic men, have an agreeable divorce and live on her own in a wealthy comfortable lifestyle until her death. Anne was a fortunate woman for her time and position imo

    • @edithengel2284
      @edithengel2284 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Her brother and mother arranged the match; I suspect she had very little to do with it, though she may well have been pleased to be becoming a queen of England. We do not know if her brother was narcissistic or whether Anne had much experience in dealing with men at all as I think she lived a rather subdued life with her mother and sisters. She certainly had the good sense to agree with Henry's plan instantly, but she can hardly have had any confidence that the king would treat her as favorably as he did. She was indeed a fortunate woman for her time and place, but she didn't have a master plan, just the knowledge of what had happened to Anne Boleyn, and the good sense to avoid Anne's fate. The rest is good luck.

      @@HistoryCalling Anna didn't spend much time in Kleve. But her direct ancestors who did live there, can be traced all the way back to Adolf III of the Marck, I believe. (Maybe further but I don't remember). Their reign over Kleve ended with Anna's nephew and with Brandenburg taking over Kleve-Marck and France's annexation of the area in later centuries, Anna's memory seemed less important to our town I think. Only in recent decades has their been more interest by the public in her life. There are some fascinating news articles published (unfortunately in German) that detail her life, death and subsequent events as seen from the Kleve's side. (Published by the NRZ called "Neue Entdeckungen: Wer war Anna Von Cleve wirklich"). I left Kleve 16 years ago and have been living on the US east coast ever since but my family is still there. I think it is telling that she, if not in word (written or spoken), certainly by her actions showed she was faithful and did love her husband, even though she knew he romantically hated and didn’t love her romantically. This could also explain why, when she was free to marry upon his death, and she was free to marry who she wanted - she still chose not to - not just for financial and personal freedom, but also because perhaps deep down, she still loved and was faithful to only him. If this is the case, she is one of the most rare women and I personally admire and will follow her good example and sense.

But Ann of Cleves in the show ended up being the wisest and most fortunate of all of Henry's conquests and spouses. She ended up with a nice estate and even ended up friends with Henry and his entire family, which was no small feat. I do believe it is understood that she was well thought of by all of his children which is amazing considering the way they were divided by religion and faction.

      Ouch! soft Irish accent means little to me and our Lord Liege Henry, the 8th of that name absolutely nothing...It was Cromwell that hired Holbein to provide Hal with a likeness so that he could approve her and marry the little lady. Alas, Hal was not impressed for reasons we may never no outside of the Flanders Mare. Jane Seymour was Hal's real love but died shortly after she gave birth to Edward VI. Hal was and still is regarded as a tyrant...perhaps a scholar can let me know what Hal had to put up with during his reign with copious hangers on, those that wanted land and high positions. Sir Thomas More never wanted such things but lost his head...I think Hal regretted this along with the loss of Cromwell who arguably paved the way for him to reject Rome and give us the Church of England...

      From what I have read, she was content to live out her life in England. Henry treated her well and gave her wealth and privilege because she did not fight the annulment. If she had returned to Cleves she would have been married off again to someone else probably with the consequence of having her own children. Maybe she wanted that- I don’t know but childbearing was dangerous in those times. If royal marriages in England taught her anything it was that the single life was safer. She was also well-regarded by all of Henry’s children and held in great esteem throughout her life.

I know that those two did not have a proper funeral, but I'm sure there was some sort of mourning somewhere? I can't think of a primary source that specifically describes it happening though. Certainly there were no items found in the grave with Anne, which would suggest no jewellery was left on her. They were married by proxy. She was given her own home, taken care of and invited to all important events.

    Part of her settlement with Henry was Dartford. The town hall where I was married was beautiful and part of her settlement.

    Thank you enjoyed this. Yes, I think she deserved her funeral. After the other Anne and Catherine Parr she is my third favourite wife.

    Thanks for the information. Many years ago I was interested in buying a property known as Place Farm, Bletchingley, Surrey origins of which dated to the 16th c and was in fact orginally the gate house to Anne of Cleves ´´Bletchingely Place´´ which sadly no longer exists. As a history buff I´ve always regretted not pursuing the purchase.

      Oh wow! As wonderful as that sounds though, I'm sure you had good reasons not to buy at the time. Old places like that can be a nightmare to maintain and come with all sorts of restrictions on what you can do to them.

    Anne of Cleves was very street smart when it came to surviving in that family....she "smiled and waved" (just smile and wave boys)

    Even though it was added way later, I find it ironic (and fitting) that Anne, even though Henry divorced her within a year, is now buried as 'Anne of Cleves, Queen of England'

      It's OK. That thumbs down made me laugh as it came in after about 7 minutes so I knew the person hadn't even watched the video and not to take any notice of them. Thank you for calling them out though 😀
