That guy who played Burt made him such a delightfully despicable character. You just love to hate him. Iola: "Thelma?!!! You forgot the strawberries!" I love that part. And then when Vint says, "I never liked him anyhow."
He was out to use her for her savings. I love when she met that man in Hawaii. They were adorable together. Love how Thelma stood up to him when he went to saying that!
The guy from Hawaii''s name was Lars and I agree, they went great together. That was the first time Iola met another man that she actually liked other than Vint. Lars should have married Iola in Hawaii and become a regular character on the series. Iola was never given any justice in terms of her love life otherwise; they kept her lonely the entire series.
@@ericandy88 From a technical standpoint, the real reason they probably didn't marry Iola is because they wanted to keep her a regular in the series. If she married, she would probably never visit the Harpers ever again (this was hinted in other episodes).
Burt Cooper deserved that shower of strawberries! Mama considers Iola family, and despite the fact that each one of them annoys her she still loves them and will take a stand for them when they are messed with.
Much like when she took down Mr. Woods for sexually harassing Naomi at Food Circus. Mama may not have been crazy about her as a daughter-in-law, but she came out swinging anytime someone took advantage of her. I think deep down, Mama was aware of how happy Naomi made Vint. You mess with family, you mess with Mama. Simple as that.
I can't believe that bert was so greedy and just grabbed almost all of the appetizers off of the appetizer tray when they were offered to him. He did not leave hardly any for anyone else. And he ordered Iola to go and get him something to drink, to go and get him a napkin, he decides what Iola is going to do with her life whether she likes it or not( cooking, cleaning, arts and crafts) and he automatically made plans about what to do about her elderly parents after he marries her, like sticking them in a cheap nursing home, etc... he is controlling and selfish and doesn't even have any consideration for Iola's feelings. Thank goodness mama is there to look out for her and teach this guy a lesson or two.

I liked it when Mama & Iola turned Burt the Jack Ass Cooper into a human strawberry shortcake with his bald head as the cake part with Mama squirting the whipped topping on his head & Iola telling her she forgot the strawberries, so Iola dumped the strawberries on his head. Bert was such a controlling person. I am so glad that Iola did not agree to marry him. She would've been stuck in a horrible marriage if she would've married him. Thank goodness she came to her senses and said "no" to him. Truth is this kind of thing happens quite a bit in real life
This happens a lot these days where people try to be controlling, I think we’ve all met someone like this at least once in our lives. I’ve met a couple women that tried to be super controlling like Bert and I kicked them to the curb. Relationships should always be partnerships not dictatorships!
The clip from this episode actually shows a lot of true things that happened in real life and unfortunately, there are a lot more worse and not many people have people that care for them enough to get them out of it before it happens

Loved this scene. It shows that even though Iola annoyed them at times, they truly cared about her and had her back - especially Mama.

I prefer the syndicated episodes, too. Bubba and Iola were nice additions and better replacements for Buzz, Sonya, and Aunt Fran.
