I think Ken and Vicki are both half-correct about Phillip. Ken Berry said a few actors have played Mama’s son Phillip before he played the role. Vicki corrects him by pointing out only Berry and McDowell have played the son with the name Phillip, while Alda and Smothers portrayed other sons. Yes and no. Alda played Larry and Smothers played Jack, however, they both could’ve been named Phillip, because McDowell’s Phillip didn’t necessarily exist in these sketches. It’s not that Larry and Jack are canonically brothers of Phillip, they just changed the character name of Mama’s son for that individual sketch. Early on, Mama’s Family would perpetually retcon itself with how many children Mama actually had. These additional sons weren’t mentioned in previous sketches prior to their sketch. The writers wrote in a new son for the special guest star that episode. It wasn’t ever meant to carry over to the next sketch. When Ken Berry first got the role as Mama’s son in the Eunice special, it was again retconned that he was Mama’s only son, despite the sketches having at least three actors portraying sons with different names. Only one son was ever seen at a time. The “Phillip” that Ken played is not necessarily the same “Phillip” that McDowell played; they gave him the name Philip because it’s been used before, but he could’ve just as easily been named Larry, because he was arguably closer in personality to Alda’s character than McDowell’s. When Mama’s Family came around, Ken played Vinton, who Ken played as a goofy but good-hearted dimwit, a totally different character than the voice-of-reason Phillip he played in Eunice. So while Vicki is correct on the semantics, Ken is correct in that he is the fourth actor to play Mama’s (only) son, and, has technically played two different sons of hers.

I never understood that this was a cameo until watching Trading Places today for the first time and doing further reading on the movie. Wow.
