Gary Richrath is one of the most underrated guitar players around, with a killer live tone. The whole band is full of great musicians. I do have to say I liked the 1970s era of REO, up through "You can Tune a piano . .. ," a lot ore than their poppier 80s stuff.
So sad that this awesome song, written in the early '70's still has meaning. Gary Richrath was such an underrated guitarist when this band did more than just pop hits. One of the best protest songs ever!
The late, great Gary Richrath on lead guitar, who also wrote this song.Gary was great to see in concert.Watch him playing the Flying Turkey Trot and 157 Riverside Avenue to see more of him.Son Of A Poor Man another great song by Gary. Thanks for this video!
The strange thing is that this is NOT the audio from that 1979 German concert (for Rockpalast [Rock Palace], a German TV show), even though the rest of the show is available. But that is the audio from the live album (cover seen at the start of the video), as you can tell from Kevin Cronin (singer)'s "Happy Halloween" at the end. My best guess is that the German audio glitched or something, so they covered by using the Live album performance instead. I mean, still GREAT, but weird. Gary Richrath (guitar, songwriter) is always fantastic on this. It makes hunting up REO shows a joy. (Just be sure they are pre-1990, as Kevin fired Gary in 1989. Which rather sucks because Gary was in the band first, although the only original members here are Neil Doughty [keyboards] and Alan Gratzer [drums].)
One of their absolute best! My wife was at the show where this was recorded for the album "You Get What You Play For" - Halloween night at Market Square Garden in Indianapolis. She was only 15!
Love REO. Truly my favorite Band since the mid 1970's. I told all my friends and family that I want "Time for Me to Fly" to play at my funeral. Glad you enjoyed this. They've got lots more to enjoy.
OLDO speedwagon, you get what you play for album. That's the one Rodney storm out. That's what we're made to be.Don't get in the wagon and rob.Rodness so storm out
I watched 3 other reaction videos of this song, and nobody had anything it to add. Thanks for analyzing the vocals. Gary Richrath the guitar player past away a few years ago. One of the most underrated guitar players and song writers. He wrote this song and many of REO's hits.
Really enjoyed your input! This is my favorite song. And REO is still touring with all original members since he joined except the drummer who retired recently. I believe.
You ever get a chance to see them in concert, go, they're fantastic, seen them a couple years ago. They seem to come to Iowa alot, they're from the Quad City/davenport Iowa area. A older friend of mine went to school with them.
@lorilxn they are still fantastic in concert. I saw them Friday night on 3/22/24 in Charleston, WV. They rocked the house from beginning to end. Kevin still sounds good at 72 years old. If they come back this way, I'll surely be there again.
Gibson Les Paul Guitar. Pick-Up switch appears to be in middle using both "Humbucker" Pick-Ups, then down for just the Bridge Pick-Up for a brighter tone.
REO is one of my favorite bands. Saw them twice. 1982 in Austin & it was amazing- Survivor opened up for them. Then in Houston in 1996, but Gary wasn't with them. Foreigner & Peter Frampton were there too. I grew up in central Tx and we moved to Dallas from 1979 to 1982 (I was 12 to 15 yrs old), and then moved back to central Tx. I sooo did not want to move back (miss all my friends, my first love, etc). REO's song "Ridin the Storm Out" became my anthem song. There's a part that goes "Thinking about what I've been missing in the city.... and I'm not missing a thing!" Dallas was so flat and boring and I come back to the beauty of central Tx with all of the rivers & my old friends from elementary school. I really wasn't missing a thing.
ah, ridding the school bus before I got my first car ( 68 gto ya punks!!! my parents made me sell it 6 months later though ha ha ) REO always had great tunes and vocals you could understand!!!!! Love 'em!!
Survey.... I'm curious to know now that you have heard and seen many of the legendary/iconic Classic Rock bands play Live... Pretend I am inviting you to a concert to see any three shows you have seen. Which bands- shows would you pick to see? Having seen most every show you have my own choices are: #1 - Pink Floyd - Pulse Tour 1994 #2 - Supertramp - Breakfast In America Tour 1983 #3 Kansas - Point Of Know Return Tour 1978.... Honorable Mention - YES/Kansas Together - 70s legends show 2010
I dig the story They HAVE to play it or there'll be a riot. They're still touring. It's a shame they're not in the HOF YET. I was with Gary😇 when he left the band because, although it made a ton of money, "Hi Infidelity" is a piece of crap. I was waiting outside the Tower Records store and bought the first one from the store. I listened to it twice, then mailed it to my 12-year-old sister and told her she's going to love it. She didn't, because she loves to ROCK.
When Kevin Cronin ousted Gary because his alcoholism, it tore the hard rock soul out of REO. Kevin favored the soft rock crap, and I kind of gave up on REO once Gary was gone and Kevin's soft crap prevailed. This song is a showcase for just how brilliant Gary's playing and tone defined REO when they really counted.

Yes, You can tune a piano but you can't tune a fish, love the 70's REO the best. One of my favorite songs Keep Pushin
i agree-the early stuff is best-157 Riverside Ave, Ridin' the Storm Out, Golden Country. the poppy stuff just doesn't measure up.
@@karenmandeville7116 100% agree with this statement.
He's easily in my top 5 greats. Wild Turkey Trot from this same show is a two 👍
Definately !! 🤘 roll with the changes , like you do , keep pushin on, 157 riverside avenue etc !
I loved the original 70s REO! Gary Richrath was an amazing guitarist!
The lead guitarist Gary Richrath wrote this song in 1972 as a reaction to the Vietnam War..The video was from 1979ish.
That song never had as much meaning and relevancy as it has today.
So sad that this awesome song, written in the early '70's still has meaning. Gary Richrath was such an underrated guitarist when this band did more than just pop hits. One of the best protest songs ever!

I think I was there too, I've seen them twice but Market Square is where all of the concerts were.
Raising my hand!! Me too
I was actually at the very last concert at Market square Arena which was Bob Seger
157 Riverside Avenue! Was really cool when I was 18 because I lived at 202 Riverside Avenue in Muncie Indiana
@@marlenepettiford3731 - there's a Riverside in Elkhart too, but it's Drive, not Ave.
one of the best rock guitar solos of all time!! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Gary was a gem.
R.I.P. Gary Richrath
First time I saw them it was a $2.00 cover charge. It was worth it.
Love REO. Truly my favorite Band since the mid 1970's. I told all my friends and family that I want "Time for Me to Fly" to play at my funeral. Glad you enjoyed this. They've got lots more to enjoy.
So glad someone finally got to this one!
If you put all the right ingredients for a Classic Rock Band into a bowl and mixed it up well, pure it out on stage.... you get REO SPEEDWAGON.
OLDO speedwagon, you get what you play for album. That's the one Rodney storm out. That's what we're made to be.Don't get in the wagon and rob.Rodness so storm out
Absolute Killer Tune!
You get what you play for. Great vinyl must be in anyone's collection
I've wore this album out in ALL formats since eight tracks!!
"Get Ready" (Rare Earth). You will love it!
Kevin looks like he's dressed for Rocky horror picture show!!!!!
Such an appropriate song for the times.
Saw them in concert in the 80's. Fantastic.
One of the greatest live albums of all time...
🎶😎 Killer song with an AMAZING guitar solo!! 💜🎶
I forgot how good these guys were. You can tuna piano but you can't tuna fish
Gary Richrath, lead guitarist, also wrote this song :-)
Great breakdown of the lyrics! Spot on!
After watching this video I have to say it...Gary, now he plays the guitar 🎸

@@monchorga I know, I seen them in 2019 and they were in Cedar Rapids 2 years ago, both outdoor venues. Love these guys
Riding the Storm Out - live. You'll see why.
They should have showed Gary Richrath during the whole solo!!!Plus he wrote the great song. Good choice and keep
Smiling. It’s only rock-n-roll
Try Gary Richraft flying turkey trot live REO Speed wagon guitar solo
Gary was grossly underrated on on song he sounded like he was playing 3-4 different guitars RIP GARY 🎸
You said it
Great reaction!
Its a Banger

I was at that show happy Halloween
My favorite song by them.😅
😢REO was big in Indiana since early 70's
saw them back in 75. great show.
Great reaction. Great comments.
Wow, I haven't heard this in years, thank you.
Gary was on fire that night, but then I think I saw them 3 times from 1980 to 1987 or so, and Gary was on fire every night.
Excellent commentary!
That's one of their best songs , because it's early 70s ! The live version is excellent , but there's something about the studio version !?
ah, ridding the school bus before I got my first car ( 68 gto ya punks!!! my parents made me sell it 6 months later though ha ha )
REO always had great tunes and vocals you could understand!!!!! Love 'em!!
next car, 69 firebird!!!! in 1985 🤘🤘🤘
oh and I worked my ASS off for those cars, bucking hay, picking rocks and working in restaurants. I started paying federal income tax at age 14!!!!!
Love it!
Amazing stuff!
Like you so is another great song
Thoughtful banger
They have a lot of good music. I would check out (that aint love.)

Give a listen to Reo Speedwagon’s ‘High Infidelity’ album. The entire album is delicious listening!
Love your channel btw! Thanks JMBOY!👌👍😃
Trump's new campaign song.
Golden country by REO Speedwagon.
Why did this band have to switch to all that POP CRAP in the 80s ?
Just to piss you off

Gary Richrath leaving the band was their demise in my opinion. They lost that rock edge.
@@sammybeck7794Kinda like Terry Kath and Chicago.
Before they sold out to the love ballad era. Good stuff. Then they released the worst album in rock history with Hi Infidelity
