    The appearance and solidity looks great. If it could be expanded by stacking multiple racks, and also accommodate other equipment, then it'd be perfect. But as it stands now, it's too limiting to be useful.

  • @PhillipHilton
    @PhillipHilton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The build quality looks great and I like the casters. However, as it doesn't accept standard rackmount kit it's a wasted opportunity in my opinion.
    About a year ago I converted an old IKEA RAST unit into an 8U rack. When you add up the RAST unit, rack rails, casters, wood screws and the blank patch panel it came to less than ~100 USD. So that 250 USD price point for a toolless rack is pricey.

    • @cloudbase7799
      @cloudbase7799 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Surely it could have been designed toolless for newer Ubiquiti gear without precluding a tool-mount option for older Ubiquiti or other-brand 19-inch rack mount gear. Something like the Samson SRK8 is much more useable/useful, IMO.

    • @PeterHonig.

      I'm just curious why you feel that the castors are important. I totally understand having them on a 5ft or 6ft tall rack that is very heavy, but a 6U rack is so short that you could trip over it if you had it on the floor. Instead, I would mount a small rack like that on a shelf or a wall where castors would not be used.

    • @PhillipHilton
      @PhillipHilton 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeterHonig. sadly I live in Singapore and rent so wall mounting is out.
      I've got three racks that I've made. An 8U rack for my core switch, router and the compute for my K3S cluster. The other two 12U racks hold small edge switches and audio production gear.
      I could wall mount or use pin legs but I've found that the casters make things much, much easier when it comes to any task which requires access to the rear of the rack or moving it i.e. repatching cables, cleaning(becomes a breeze), reorganising equipment, moving house(which I do every ~two years).

    It can be mounted on the wall, I have build a platform with casters for $10
    It works great, build materials are good, nothing fancy, compatible with all 1U network equipment (it's depth it's limited to 19 inches so you can fit short depth equipment only)

    Looks nice, but way too limited in application and too expensive for just 6u. I don't get why they bothered with this, maybe just to showcase gear at trade shows. In most places, network gear is squirrelled away from all but IT eyes so a basic standard rack is much more desirable.

      If its got holes that are identical to all modern UI gear, then ears can be added.

    • @Polkster13
      @Polkster13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KentBunn That's the problem. It doesn't. It only has one captive screw on the rack to line up with just one hole on the side of the patch panel. I guess you could drill out holes on the patch panel and then tap them and then attach rack ears to it, but it would be fairly difficult lining everything up precisely.

    • @KentBunn
      @KentBunn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rack only has 1 screw. The patch panel may have 2 holes, I don’t know for sure. If it has 2 holes, it could have ears added on. It wouldn’t be ideal, but it might work in another rack that way.
      It might have the second hole, since that’s how you line up for the screw on all the other devices.

    Personally i would love the wheelless option (as you probably can stack the racks too), but you can always lock the wheels all the time as the wheels win it from the hard plastic pieces (for the bottom rack). I mean, it's not forbidden to lock them all the time, atleast... i hope :-) maybe Ubiquiti should shine a light on that :-D
    I like the design, it's not a big metal box with (whoohoo!.....) a window in it. You can see the cabling, yes. But the windowed version also shows all your cables. but i see a bigger issue than that.... Come to think of it that the generic 6u unit can be mounted to a wall or the floor... Well you can attach the ubiquiti rack to a wall or a floor but that would be pointless as one could screw the whole thing apart :P
