The martial art used in this movie is called "Silat". A lot of school kids in Indonesia, Malaysia, & Brunei learn this martial art. It is not impossible for most people in that building know how to fight like that.

Me & my brother went to the screening for this before it came out. The writer / director Gareth Evans was there & had a Q&A after. He said with the fights, they were really hitting each other to the body. No headshots though.
Also, Iko Uwais (Rama) & Yayan Ruhian (Mad Dog) both worked on the fight choreography. They’re both master practitioners of the Indonesian martial art called Silat.

I like the way you react on this my fav movie, it's so natural and not too much like the other guys did, and you explain the scenes, the editing, etc. keep up guys!!
"Why they don't do that at night !? Because all the criminal and bad guy is work and active at night, 'cause criminal and bad guy ussually nocturnal !"....🤔😅
Not only this has some most amazing fight scenes and choreographs ever. Film maker's didn't do Hollywood style censoring. Every knife hit was aimed for kill / cripple spot unlike most Hollywood action films they mostly (with few exception) either censor hits, or show stabbing in location etc that is not dangerous in short term. These all in here... just for to kill or cripple. Its quite amazing.
The final fight against Mad Dog, iirc, took two weeks to shoot. Hollywood doesn't want to "waste" that kind of time, they want to wrap it up as fast as possible so they can make money and move on to the next project... the result are lame fight scenes with fast cuts and shaky camera, to hide poor choreography and sloppy execution. That's why movies like The Raid are so good, they actually put in the time and effort instead of rushing and halfassing
Fun Fact: The actual film was The Raid 2. But the Director/producer didn't have the budget to make the film. So He made The Raid 1 to make money, so he could make The Raid 2
BTW...fun fact., "IKO UWAIS" as the martial art policman..,he is villain on "The EXPENDABLES 4". And "JOE TASLIM" as Jaka is Sub Zero in "MORTAL KOMBAT " 🤘 IKO.. like Indonesian jackie chan ...,and all the choreos come from him..
"Fun Fact that Mad Dog guy together with the main kick ass villain from The Raid 2 was playing on John Wick 3 to be kinda some major obstacle to Keanu Reeves !"...🤔😅
john wick, captain america winter soldier, dare devil, the arrow and so many other movies are inspired by this movie. this movie becomes reference for action movies in the world. go watch The Raid 2: Berandal
IKO UWAIS successfully starred in several films at the start of his career in Indonesia, including The Raid, now he is a Hollywood actor and has played many roles with several Indonesian colleagues. The choreography used uses pencak silat martial arts techniques, a martial art originating from Indonesia
@@Thenamesdraco436 I agree. 2 is kinda weak with those gimmick fighters, baseball bat n hammer girl. Still, better than almost all other action movies.
Great to see you both enjoying this masterpiece of a martial action movie. The punches/kicks you've seen in this movie mostly were direct hit. The actors (Yes the actors can fight here) and stuntments had to learn how to slow down their hit when it close to touch their partner so it wont hurt that much during the filming of the fight scene. At the time for the practice or choreo making they went to build like trust to each other so whenever one hit a bit too hard they wont hit their partner back. Would love to see ya guys watch the sequel cuz its a whole lot better than this movie in almost every way

This film has a lot of fighting/many people who can fight with the martial art "Silat" because this film also has a documentary motif. Gareth Evans (Wales, England) is a documentary filmmaker who loves silat, meets several silat teachers Iko (Rama), Yayan (Mad Dog) and members of several silat schools. They all wanted to introduce Silat as a martial art that existed hundreds of years ago in Southeast Asia (Indonesia). If Americans (Hollywood) saw that Kungfu/Karate/Taekwondo was great and big like the vastness of the ocean, I would say that Silat is the Ocean. So when Gareth (England) took the film The Raid internationally, many fans of Hollywood martial arts films were shocked! The new world was introduced to Kungfu/karate etc. because the country of origin was already advanced and controlled cinema. However, for several European countries such as the Netherlands/France/England, the older generation already knows and feels the bitterness of Silat, because they have already set foot in Indonesia. And silat schools also exist in the countries mentioned above, although they are not widespread, because silat techniques are difficult to adapt to the world of sports. Karate/Kungfu/Taekwondo/Wrestling/etc. also live and develop in Indonesia, but it is difficult for the Betawi/Sundanese/West Sumatran tribes to develop, because this is the basic tribe of pencak silat. Nah, they did that in a week. Gareth is a man with mad attention to details, in every shot he needs at least 8-9/10 shots. The scene when Jaka and Mad Dog met (knife v pistol) for that one simple scene they did it for +50 takes.

Pretty solid comparison, not gonna lie
Well put
He could just said "good choreography" to make it simple.
So perfectly put. I saw Raid 2 in cinemas when it came out and left the cinema totally blown away like everyone else. Absolute crazy action!
