THIS is so important! from wikipedia "The film's ballet scenes feature the movement of New York City Ballet dancers, computer animated through motion capture imaging."
YESS I love the making of, I had DVDs with bonus features from this one and the Nutcracker, here they are! th-cam.com/video/SaibrO3vcI0/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/hoMS1cYmKx8/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/1qHGpkoJIro/w-d-xo.html New York City ballet dancers did the motion capture, Maria Kowroski was Barbie in many of the movies and Tiler Peck was part of it!
This should seriously be a ballet! It has everything it needs a storyline, costumes, characters, music, etc. sure you could tweak some things but this would actually be a such a fun ballet
The choreography was done by Peter Martins (ex NYCB), you can definitely tell because it's fast and has a lot of Balanchine inspired choreography. The piece playing when Rowena has to dance forever is Tarantella (Gottschalk), another Balanchine work.
This movie is literally what got me into doing ballet, and now I’ve been dancing for almost 15 years. I’d pay for watching it being made into an actual ballet 😩
Ugh this movie made me want to do ballet, I always asked my mum to sign me up but she never did, I fear it's too late for me to start ballet sadly (I'm currently in my 20's not saying specific age for internet safety) 😢
@@bellatrn9125 noo it´s never too late! Not everyone needs to become a professional! I did it age 4-16, had a decade break (other dances) and returned 2 months ago back to ballett age 27. If you enjoy it, do it, plut its great exercise for body & mind ;-)
@@bellatrn9125 this happened to me too. But I actually assisted to classes when I was a kid... And the teacher was absolutely horrifying 💀 I still remember the things she said to me and that happened more than a decade ago. Aaaand I quit ballet forever hahaha now I only enjoy watching it 😂
@BellaTRN it’s never too late!! Look up adult ballet classes in your area. A lot of places offer beginner classes for fun and fitness and those who missed out as kids. And they’re so much fun
Please do Barbie and the Pink Shoes!! It's a more recent ballet movie, so it might be a bit more accurate pointe shoe wise. And there's a few different ballets in there.
Much of the music is based on Mendelssohn's work, as well as the theme being an arrangement of Ancient Airs. One of my in-laws composed & arranged the music for this and won an Emmy for the end credits song Shine. I totally freaked out when I found this out! I agree that this absolutely should be a ballet. The main theme alone just makes me want to dance. This came out when I was in high school and i still unashamedly love it. Watching the BTS videos of the motion capture is super interesting too
What a sweet reaction video! The small feet are truly just for animation, think how many characters have proportionally huge heads. As someone who grew up watching Barbie movies, especially this one, I love seeing you review them! I do believe something was made abt the dancers behind this movie specifically. Don't bother with the newer ones, assuming any even have ballet, tho, they avoid anything that could be seen as mildly intense (ie poison or girls being cursed as swans) and are thus only interesting to their very young target audience. I doubt they'd even spend the money for accurate ballet, or such pretty musical compositions
Barbie and The Pink Shoes was probably the last one I saw saw that really had any ballet, and it was wonderfully done with actual music and modified routines from famous beloved ballets like Giselle and Swan Lake, even if the dancing was overshadowed in some places by story.
@@RHTQ1 While most of the earlier films covering ballet had Maria Kowroski as the motion capture dancer. Pink Shoes had Jenelle Manzi as its dancer, so I believe it should. It was one of the last Babrie films featuring ballet/plays, before they really began experimenting with voice actresses and trying new art styles. In my opnion the newer art style is hard to watch if you grew up with the older classic look, even if it is rough around the edges compared to today's animation😆.
My oldest daughter was obsessed with this movie. When I got pregnant with my youngest she suggested Genevieve as the name after the lead in this movie. Fast forward a few months and I forgot she said it and suggested Genevieve for the baby. The baby ( now 14 ) is named Genevieve and has been dancing ballet for 7 yrs. The 29th of this month is her Danceversary. Genevieve definitely suits her as she is my Dancing Princess 👸 🩰💖
These movies are so iconic! I watched so many of these growing up, and I loved the ballet ones the most. I didn't commit to ballet till I was 12 but still loved them. Turning 18 in 2 weeks, I think 17-18 year olds are the youngest to be able to fully appreciate the older more iconic Barbie movies. They are old, so we all remember them being newer and fun. Love theses reaction videos and I hope to see more!
Im actually younger than 17, but I appreciate these films so much because they use real ballet moves, and have actual plot lines other than the generic modern barbie films. honestly these movies are so iconic and I am so glad my older siblings let me watch films with them when I was little
My Mother got me this movie on DVD when I was young. I didn’t know any ballet as a kid so I actually appreciate the amount of work they put into making this watching now as an adult.
The ballet company (I forgot which) that made the choreography for the movie owns the right to this ballet. I hope they do make it into an official ballet in the future.
Thank you!!! How hasn’t this story been made into a ballet is completely crazy. The story is perfect, plenty of “main characters” dancers could be and choreography would be amazing! Someone needs to do it.
11:08 Just a barbie doll and probably a lot of new little ballerinas. This movie is actually the reason I took ballet classes as a kid, and even though I decided it really wasn't for me (pointe is really beautiful but it also intimidates me) I never once regretted it.
I'm pretty sure people have already suggested this, but a lot of the DVD extras with behind-the-scenes looks at how they did the motion capture for these Barbie movies (I think it was al the same ballerina, at least for Nutcracker and 12 Princesses) are available on TH-cam! It could be fun for another react video
I suggested it as well, before I saw your comment :D I'm sure Jo would be just as fascinated as most people to see how the magic was being created! And it would be cool to watch :D
Seriously I need her to react to the behind the scenes video. It's just on TH-cam so it's easy to find too! And I'm sure she would be so happy about it. I mean it's Peter Martin and principle dancers from the NYCB!
My studio actually choreographed our own version of 12 Dancing Princesses for our spring show not too long after this came out. We used music from Sleeping Beauty and it was one of my favorite shows to do 😊
There’s a behind the scenes video on TH-cam, Maria Kowroski was the Barbie in a lot of these movies. And it was choreographed by Peter Martins of NYCB. A young Tiler Peck also plays the littlest girls in this as well which is so cute to see.
I love your reactions to this movie. Makes me smile. What I love is they got a pro prima ballerina to do the choreography and perform in mocap. That is not easy.
They actually have a short documentary about how they made it featuring one of the NYCB dancers called Dancing On Air, the making of Barbie 12 Dancing Princesses, and something called Studio K made a short ballet off of it
I had this on DVD and there were bonus features that showed the ballerina they hired from the New York City Ballet to mocap her movements and use her to make Barbie dance following the ballerina's recorded movements. There was also a short documentary about girls going to the NYCB and what a day in their life was. It was so cool, I loved it as a kid. I was a synchronised swimmer and this movie was the closest thing I felt to having a movie depiciting my sport. I eventually became a semi-pro and was an athlete for my country's team until an accident but I always remember this movie fondly.
This movie came out in 2006 .Maria Kowroskibans helped make the dance movement and show also helped in the Nutcracker and Swan Lake lake Also the choreography was created by Peter Martin’s. I also agree it should be made into a ballet someday it will be I hope 💙
Fun fact! The 12 princesses names all start with the first 12 letters of the alphabet from oldest to youngest! Ashlyn, Blair, Courtney, Delia, Edeline, Fallon, Genevieve, Hadley, Isla, Janessa, Kathleen and Lacey
Wow. This is my childhood!!! I freaking LOVED this movie!!! My dance is company has actually been talking about making this into a ballet for our spring performance in the future!
i loved this as a child. Old barbie movies made me fall in love with ballet! I still think they made a great job creating those movies!! I enjoyed her reaction somuch also
My daughters (all 3) from 25 to 19 and I spent many hours watching all the Barbie movies. This one is hands down their absolute favorite! We still have the movie and watch every so often. I totally think this should be made into a ballet. Barbie rocks!

I was going through boxes at my parents’ house and found one of those combo coloring books with several stories- it was all the Barbie ballets! It’s been really fun to break out my crayons and be a kid again.
They created a whole video behind the scenes of the movie's ballet where they showed the dancers and the way they movements were motion captured for the movie.
My sister used to own a small children’s ballet company and she did a rendition of the twelve dancing princesses. The story was slightly different but i though Josephine would want to know someone did a ballet of it.

I remember watching the birthday song on repeat when I was younger. I honestly got chills watching it again, it is so beautiful and sweet and shows how close the sisters are. Truly this was a wonderful nostalgia trip, thank you for reacting!
The copy i had as a kid had an extended special features section that showed real dancers with all these fancy motion tracking suits on them that were used to animate the princesses, you should find that and react to it next!!!
As a kid who grew up with *these* barbie movies, it’s super nostalgic I loved that one I literally had all of them, with the exception of barbie diaries The animation may be a little choppy but I love it. I’m 13 I had these DVDs from 4-9yrs Probably one of the things I wanted to be a ballerina at tha age. Now I’m not rlly sporty but yk
You should react to Barbie and The Pink Shoes!! It’s not my favorite Barbie movie but I think the fact that they mixed a bunch of ballets together is really fun!!!
One of my most favorite childhood Barbie movies! Actually, Genevieve was established to be already in love with Derek (the show cobbler) and it showed right at their first scene. It’s that they didn’t confess to each other right away.
the making off shows that they actually mapped the movements of real ballerinas, so it's real ballet 💙

As a kid who grew up with *these* barbie movies, it’s super nostalgic I loved that one
I literally had all of them, with the exception of barbie diaries
The animation may be a little choppy but I love it.
I’m 13
I had these DVDs from 4-9yrs
Probably one of the things I wanted to be a ballerina at tha age. Now I’m not rlly sporty but yk
"just a barbie doll"
There was actually a gameboy advance game that was FANTASTIC
I’ve been waiting for a ballet remake of this movie forever!❤
okay first of all; I fell in LOVE with your reaction to this movie
I spontaneously rewatched this movie last night, amazing timing as always
This movie is CHILDHOOD, i got my copy signed by Kelly Sherridan (Genevieve's va)
You should react to Barbie and The Pink Shoes!! It’s not my favorite Barbie movie but I think the fact that they mixed a bunch of ballets together is really fun!!!
7:08 The music is for Midsummer night dream I did it a while back with Nevina ballet and this was my music so nostalgic
I remember watching this as a kid, and till today is my most favorite Barbie movie. I'm glad you made a reaction to this movie. Thank you!
omg yes!!!!! finally!!! been waiting for your reaction to 12 Dancing Princesses!!! yaaay
I was raised on this movie and I inspired me to do ballet for like ten years
I grew up on these movies, the ballet movies were some of my absolute favorites.
One of my most favorite childhood Barbie movies! Actually, Genevieve was established to be already in love with Derek (the show cobbler) and it showed right at their first scene. It’s that they didn’t confess to each other right away.
I looked it up and someone did make this a ballet! it premiered in 2019 so it pretty new.
im sobbing watching the dancing scenes right now, why am I sobbing I'm so moved seeing this again
