    I bought a 2007 s4rs. Best decision I've made when it comes to buying old vs. new. The s4rs is an unbelievable machine. Besides its timeless sexy looks, it rides and performs well beyond my skills. It sounds and smells like a proper Ducati should. Great video. Love my s4rs.

      How do you find the m696? Is it sportier? But also comfy?
      I've just got a '93 M600 and plan on keeping it until 2024/2025 fall.
      I've looked a bit on the m696 but also a m695.

    Minor correction:
    The Monster S4RS with 998 Testrastretta engine was available from 2006 and not 2004 as mentioned,

      Completely agree. No Idea how many bikes I've owned over the years including several Ducati. My 2007 S4RS (red one lost over the rail on the Blue Ridge because of blind decreasing radius turn that surprised me with gravel and black replacement) were my favorites. The Termi exhaust note was my all time favorite when it was winding out under throttle.

    That's why I bought a mint 2016 Monster 1200R this year, for just 60% of new cost.

    Left me plenty of cash to customize it with all the touches I desired.

    I have both bikes. 2007 S4RS Red Stripe and 2015 1200S White Stripe. You nailed it on the head when you stated that the 1200S is more "finished" ; however, I do enjoy the sound of the dry clutch sound over the liquid cooled.
    On the flip side. The S4RS is constantly in the shop for repair. So the statement of saving money really isn't true.
    I love both these bikes. From my own experience I will write that I prefer the 1200S as its easier to ride, electronics (including riding mode) are fantastic, and I have more confidence in its capabilities.

    Actually the later 998(2002) and the 999 are very reliable. 97-early 2002 had problems with the flaky rocker arms but later did not had it anymore. Sure sometimes you could get a lemon but the quality over all of the 998/999 and later is quite good. But lets face it even later Ducatis has some problems, 1098 had for example problems with main bearings if I remember correctly and 1199 had problems with cylinder heads cracking.. But If you want a Ducati then you should not be discourage by an early 916(94-96) 998 and 999 are good too even though some 998 can have problems with the Flaky rocker arms too. Sure they seems more troublesome then Japanese bikes but they do not have Fatal flaws like the 4 valve machines produced (usually 916-996) from 97 to early 2002.

    I have a 99 CBR 600. I could never stand to replace it with another sport bike, because it was so good and I'd already had it jetted and changed the springs and valves for my weight. New bikes are nice but dialed in carbs are a pleasure, and these days they try to make frames and wheels out of steel for a lot of the bikes.

    There must be some kind of serious mistake here. The Monster S4RS Testastretta did not exist in 2004. That bike must be an S4R if it's a 2004 bike, with the 996 motor, not the 2007/2008 S4RS with the 998 motor.

  • @Sam-K
    @Sam-K 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Older Monsters were all about RAW HP... Newer Monsters are about cruising ala Triumph Speed Triple (Which BTW used to be a HOT Street-fighter)...
    But The Monster 1200 "R" does possess some serious muscle that will likely put this S4R to shame...
    Both are great machines though... Yes, they're both Monsters, but are designed for different type of riding... No surprise that an over a decade old Monster could easily beat the new 1200...

    The *one* thing about the S4R and S4RS to me is the way the radiator looks like it was made for a different bike and just pulled out of the parts bin.
    The new one can actually look *really* good with an aftermarket round headlight and a different exhaust. It's really unfortunate that that's all Ducati had to do to make the newer one look about as good as the old one.

    I like the newer color of the monster 821. The grey color goes great with the design of the bike in my opinion. I would get a dark edition, but the lack of red accents makes the bike look bland to me. A bit of red on the frame, maybe the lettering on the tank, and I'd buy the dark edition in a heart beat. But the grey will do if they don't come out with what I'm looking for.
    Edit: search Ducati monster 821 carbon fiber on TH-cam. The video at the top belongs to a guy who modded his bike, and that's close to what I'm thinking of. Just lacking the red frame. I mean, come on. The red frame is iconic to the monster. You can't leave that out.

    Unfortunately what is not mentioned in the video is that the old Ducati are a pain to drive in traffic,they dont like going slow and the service internals sucks and while Desmo services are too expensive whatever money you think you saved by going old soon you will spend that money anyway on high maintenence.
    The new generation of Monsters are more user friendly when driving with low rpm and they have doubled the service internals.
    Still the older versions has more raw power and so its basically what you are after.Lots of people dont like the new Ducatis they find them tame and kinda "japanised" if thats a word.

    • @MrKinir
      @MrKinir 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can confirm some Monster aren't user friendly in traffic. I hate riding mine in town. Dry clutch + long gear ratio = no fun at all at low speed.
      I should change my gear ratio tbh.

    • @PhocaCPH
      @PhocaCPH 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. To whoever is thinking about S4R for commuting: Just no... don't. You will hate yourself and the bike. However on open roads is as fun as you want it to be, or as exciting as you dare. And by God blue S4R is one of the beautiful bikes ever made, and with years it only gets nicer somehow. Not this one though... the black/red colour scheme and belly pan are too ostentatious.

    • @nyplantings2420
      @nyplantings2420 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, wait a minute, I see your point but the Monster does have an upright seating position to see well over traffic, wide motocross style handle bars for leverage at low speed, light weight and very good low end torque. Maybe a larger sprocket as MrKinir mentions but there are far worse bikes in traffic.

    • @MrKinir
      @MrKinir 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right, it has wide handlebars, it's very light and nimble.
      If you change the sprocket, it should become quite agile in traffic.
      I'm not sure if this is true, but: I've been told they fit those super long gear ratios in factory to comply with the anti pollution norms.
      It helps with the tests. (Allegedly)

      wheelsdeal It depends which monster you compare. I have a 2004 M1000sie, which is air cooled and 2 valve. It is very cheap to maintain and I've never had any issues. So the new monster has + 32hp, + 29nm and is also 10 kg lighter but the old one is faster? I know things in real life and on paper can be different, but with this much difference it is hard to believe.

      That is precisely what I was thinking! Something does not add up. It just seems to me that it was not much of a test. They are trying to hang the whole story on some drag racing run? How many runs did they do? Who were the drivers? Did they switch at all? Nothing but questions remain.

    • @heliogenesi
      @heliogenesi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      exactly. their ''test'' doesn't prove anything.

    I had an 2007 S2R1000 that was somewhat kitted. Easier to work on and plenty fast for a naked bike and probably a better wheelie machine.

    You weren't talking bollox because you'd still spend 20 -30 thou on extras on a new 1200.. the old monster looks better, sounds better and is quicker but most important it has the Hey Babe "How you doin" factor when you pop out to the garage and we really like that..

    44teeth made a video about which is faster, 2005 suzuki GSXR 1000 with 165HP or a ducati panigale V4 with 234 HP, and the suzuki won always. So in that category it doesnt matter how old they are. The only thing that really changes is the safety with all kinds of electronic help, so the 18 year old bobby with his new racebike bought by his parents doesnt have to worry all that much.

  • @3star2nr

    The new bike looks fantastic. And this isn't really a fair comparison. Throw thousands at any bike and I'll get it to out perform something that's showroom stock...
    I can put a turbo on my mustang and out run a Shelby. But my car is still, not a Shelby or nearly as good all around

    This seems to be a common theme in biking, no point buying new as older bikes are just as good to ride. No wonder sales of new bikes are suffering.

    that is eight and a half minutes of my life that I can't have back. as soon as I heard that those Motors don't last long in the S4R, that pretty much did it for me.
    and is it just me, or does anyone else believe that the older Ducati can't possibly be quicker or faster?. I mean maybe stoplight to stoplight?, but no way in the quarter mile.

    The difference is when you come to sell them. The new bike will drop a lot more value that the older bike. The reason the old monster is still that price is because people still want them and even more so now ducati are selling more bikes than ever.

    • @jitterball
      @jitterball 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Gary Lowe Service interval on the new Monster is every 9000 miles! That's a lot of miles, by that, I assuming that bike's price shouldn't drop that much.

    • @garylowe8601
      @garylowe8601 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      jitterball Yes i agree. When you think Ducati's from 10 years about had service intervals of 600K, 6,000K, 12,000K, 18,000K
      So basically ever 6,000 miles.

    I disagree with the fat bearded guy here. The ducatis after 2001 were not particularly unreliable. Sure they are old, but with descent maintenance and low mileage can be very reliable bikes.
