you are a huge motivation for me ginger. Cause of your marathon videos i force myself to get outside and run every day. Keep up the good work man! Train hard, Race Harder, Party Hardest!
Great video Ethan. Awesome to see Chris Vargo, who's interview I just listened to on Trailrunner Nation, and Jimmy Dean, who coached me through my first marathon in 2007! It's been very inspiring watching you progress as a runner throughout this year and am excited to see what 2014 holds. For me, it will mean my first 50 miler at AR. Keep up the good work and thanks for representing SoCal on the MUT scene.
Thanks dude! Vargo is a rad dude, super inspiring and glad we're friends! JDF is an AWESOME inspiration and motivator. Great dude! And for you, GO ROCK THAT 50MILER!!! You got this!
Another great video. Can I also just say thanks for keeping running fun and inspiring me and others. Watching your journey over the past months as been the main inspiration behind me signing up for my first ultra in March '14. So thank you again, keep running, and keep inspiring people because that's how we all change the world!
It's a UK event called the Canalathon. I think the hardest part will be about 9 miles in when it goes right past my house. Temptaion is dangerous. www.cannonballevents.co.uk/canalathon.php
Hi, Ethan! You may not remember me (Jaime) ,but I ran with you for a few miles to the halfway point (also where we were promised awesome broth, but alas, no veggie broth!). I just wanted to say congratulations on your race, and thanks for letting me run part of it with you! You helped make my first 50 awesome! Hope to see you again next year.
Ok this video is contagious :p I've had just eaten dinner, was chilling on the couch, just about to grab a beer when I noticed "oh, ethan uploaded new video, cool" and BAM! 10 minutes later I was out on the run
Really great video. The production value is just getting better and better. Also, you look way better than you did running Squamish so you can really tell you are improving. Great job!
Congrats Ginger!!! by the way, i could not see your shoe, what is it?? did you review?? I'm going for my first 100k on may 17th here in Brazil. Thnx and keep on moving.
Superb, thanks Ethan ...so great to see that all over the world we share the same sentiment in running hard, training and enjoy the races we done..thanks for sharing this with us.. French Trailer... see u on tracks..
I saw a ton of big names out on that course! You're lucky to have been running with them. Hey Ethan thanks for being an inspiration...you're the guy I wanna be!
This is probably the best video you did so far (best i've seen ). Just great editing, great song choice just amazing. Made me wanna be there so much and go for a run :). I just did my first half marathon under 2 hours (yeah another noob :) but I train hard. I have a bad left knee and supination do you have any advice on what shoes to buy. I guess I need some extra cushioning an flexibility wright ?? Anyways congrats on the race dude awesome job. Greetings from Croatia!
AWESOME PR! Huge congratulations on ending 2013 in a great way! Can't wait to read the race recap! [BTW, still waiting for the Ginger Runner race recap soundtrack to drop...]
After this race you must change CURRENT RECORDS on Your site :) From 50m (TRAIL): 11:09:00 to 10:42:56 I'v run this year my first 100k 4800+m Ultra Trail Maratohon. Running since 2012. I have asthma ;) Next year maybe I will start in NFE Challange. Cheers
Awesome job Ginger, red headed guy. You look a lot happier at the end of this race than last years version. Have you thought about trying the Great Canadian Death Race?
MAN ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO.I LOVE YOUR RACING VIDEOS NORMALLY I WATCH IT FEW TIMES EACH.KEEP POSTING.WHAT SHOES DID YOU USE FOR THIS RACE?THANKS FOR SHARING.
What a beautiful course. This race is now officially on my bucket list. I hope my brother-in-law goes to grad school at Stanford so I can crash at his place for this race.
As Yoda would say...Courageous you are! Inspiring would be a grave understatement. I appreciate your efforts and the way that you include us in on your great running adventures. You have a bunch of great friends too, cherish them. Q: What is the name of the water bottle vest that you wear and where can I get one? Thanks, D.
water bottles in the salomon vest front pockets - how's that worked out for ya? i recently got one, but have been too afraid of over-stretching or breaking the mesh!!
It'll always come down to personal preference. I like them, but can't say they improve performance one way or another. Recovery however, that's another story...
*Sweet Account of ********* **#ECSChampionship** **#SanFrancisco* Ethan!! :) Great work all around man congrats. Waited all day for this dude :) Just got off work a little bit ago (currently after midnight) and now after watching this I want to go run another 50k in the Headlands (just ran one Saturday) so yeah thanks ;) Awesome ending btw with that Mauka Coach Jorge Maravilla doing his lovely Parkour. Cheers!
Good God man!!.. That's Killian Jornet, Geof Roes & a lot of other big names out there. Such a great line up, only missing is Anton & Scott, that would've been epic. Great run man.. Kudos!!
everywhere you turned, there were legends. It was pretty crazy! We even ran into the entire salomon team at Whole Foods. It was like watching the Cobra Kai enter and getting all anxious. hahaha
It was awesome. Never looked at it as competition, but rather the opportunity to run the same trails as them at the same time. Had a blast and every elite I met was incredibly kind and supportive. really cool.
Hey Ginger! great video! how do you think is NF SF 50m suitable for 1st ultra (I'm 3.05 marathoner)? hills scare me a bit, but I cant find any other decent races that time (late nov - early december)
Hi. First let me apologize for posting on an unrelated video but I was trying to ensure a quick response on a topic that you seem to be fairly knowledgeable in. I'm going to be embarking on a trek around the world on foot and am looking for a reliable watch with the functions that would be useful in a wilderness setting. I will need something with a GPS, altimeter, compass, and of course waterproof. So far what I've found is the watches with GPS don't seem to have a battery life or setting suitable for extended travel and only occasional location checks. I would need something that could last at least 1 year without needing a new battery or 2 weeks in between charges. If there is anything you can recommend or even just tell me it doesn't exist that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
no clue on that front. I've only dealt with ultra watches. Sounds like you need a handheld gps unit as opposed to a watch. best bet is to go to an adventure store and ask there.
Hey Ethan would you recommend this as a first time ultra maybe doing the 50k and would you recommend it even if I haven't ran a full marathon or a shorter distance
I didn't think your pack looked big enough..is that one you reviewed? I wondered if the water bottles jabbed you in the arm pit..lol..my luck that would happen to me. How long did you train for this race?
Joy Hale and trained all year for all my races. If you go back and look at my other race videos or blog you'll see I raced almost once a month, whether an ultra or marathon.
Ei Ethan, just a thought. Could you make an special episode on tips for a good drop bag contents. Specially for 50m to 100m Ultras. I bet a lot of runners be interested on that. i've only experienced 2 65km ultras on mountain trails and I always end up 50% satisfied w/ my own drop bags, never got it right & end up wishing for items i could've stacked in it.. could ya buddy?.. Thanks man. TRB!!
That's a good idea! I know that what might be in one persons drop bag will be different from another's. But I'll happily spill the beans on what's in mine!
Congrats on the the race!! This is your best video to date.. What you and your friends are doing is very inspiring. Oh and congrats on your engagement :-)
SirLlama2000 five miles a day is good, and more distance does not always mean better! Actually ultras and Their training put a beating on your body, bigger chance of injury than your training. And- If you are running 5 miles a day at 5 minute miles you'd be world class! Just sayin'
you are a huge motivation for me ginger. Cause of your marathon videos i force myself to get outside and run every day. Keep up the good work man! Train hard, Race Harder, Party Hardest!
Hell yeah, get those miles in! Well done! #TrainRaceBeer
You are the man! I'm currently training for my first marathon in March. You are an inspiration!

As Yoda would say...Courageous you are! Inspiring would be a grave understatement. I appreciate your efforts and the way that you include us in on your great running adventures. You have a bunch of great friends too, cherish them. Q: What is the name of the water bottle vest that you wear and where can I get one? Thanks, D.
Ethan and Sally, two times the funny. Good job everyone.
water bottles in the salomon vest front pockets - how's that worked out for ya? i recently got one, but have been too afraid of over-stretching or breaking the mesh!!
Obviously worked for 50 mile race, and run with bottles in them all time. No probs.
Love your video! May I ask, what setting you're using on your GoPro? Thanks
damn I thought my 9k run was hard today but this is just beyond my comprehension. epic stuff and so inspiring!
Congrats! Awesome run and video! Btw-what are your thoughts on compression socks(I noticed you wore them in the race)?
It'll always come down to personal preference. I like them, but can't say they improve performance one way or another. Recovery however, that's another story...
*Sweet Account of ********* **#ECSChampionship** **#SanFrancisco* Ethan!! :) Great work all around man congrats. Ethan...that was kick ass...loved it!!! That course was beautiful but hey, where did you leave your neon yellow coat? Bravo man!
hahaha, got a little warm so I shoved it in the pack at mile 40 :)
I didn't think your pack looked big enough..is that one you reviewed? I wondered if the water bottles jabbed you in the arm pit..lol..my luck that would happen to me. How long did you train for this race?
Joy Hale It's just a minimal pack. Fits perfect with no chaffing. it might look small because I'm a bigger boy, but I assure you, it's correct.
Joy Hale and trained all year for all my races. If you go back and look at my other race videos or blog you'll see I raced almost once a month, whether an ultra or marathon.
That's awesome...I shared your latest video on my Facebook page and I had a friend get inspired..sharing the love of adventure :D
Loved this!!!!
thank you!

Thanks all around Clay!
how was the salomon pack with the normal water bottles ? Did they fit ok ? Any problems ?
They obviously worked for 50 miles :) little tedious getting them in and out, but you get used to it.
GR, please re-watch this vid and recalibrate; this is where it's at...!
im over here running 5 miles a day and he is over here just running a 50 mile ultra marathon... Goals
SirLlama2000 five miles a day is good, and more distance does not always mean better! Actually ultras and Their training put a beating on your body, bigger chance of injury than your training. And- If you are running 5 miles a day at 5 minute miles you'd be world class! Just sayin'
What Salomon race pack were you using? Have you done a review on it?
salomon slab 5l and yes. it's in my reviews.
