Intermediate Bouldering Techniques to Improve Your Climbing

  • In this weeks video, we teamed up with The Climbing Hangar development coach Ben Fitz to cover four essential intermediate techniques for climbers looking to level up their skills: heel hooking, flagging, dynamic movement, and pressing.
    Ben was generous enough to guide me through each technique step-by-step over a session at The Climbing Hangar Matchworks in Liverpool. If you’re a newer climber, or you’ve been climbing for years, I hope the session provides some helpful tips to help you improve your climbing efficiency and technique.

    Hurray! Intermediate technique video. There are so many videos for beginner climbing technique and that is fantastic, but I’ve really been missing videos on intermediate technique. I did not start watching climbing TH-cam until I was well past my beginner phase and was looking to improve because I kind of hit a plateau. So I wanted to find videos that would help me improve but it was pretty difficult to find the same kind of breakdowns of intermediate climbing techniques. I’m glad there’s more now. Fingers crossed for a part two of this! 🤞🏻

    I love boulders where I have to push with my arms and legs! Somehow it feels like my thing, finger strength is not as big of a factor and that's what I'm lacking the most as a relatively new climber, and I can utilize my flexibility to do strange moves. I generally tend to like odd boulders more than the traditional grab-and-pull kind.

    Good advices.
    Your climbing is pretty good for the time you are into it.
    I believe that if you want to improve to the next level an "easy" way is to work on your confidence and fear of falling. Maybe some Parkour (or Judo 😉 but it is less impressive) training or something like that so you know how to move your body into space in movement and you can also fall without hurting yourself.
    All the best!

    For me the step towards more dynamic moves is soooo difficult. Im already doing heel hooks, flagging and pressing. But because I'm rather small (and not strong) I started to do that while climbing 4b-5c. Currently I feel just super stuck because I cannot do anything dynamic. Every time I did a "dyno" everyone else just grabs it.
    It honestly is low key embarrassing climbing a 6a slab and then falling off the 4b dyno (over and over again).

  • @ST-vt4nu
    @ST-vt4nu ปีที่แล้ว

    I really need to work on flagging on overhangs. I climb about 6A now, but on overhangs I tend to climb up to about 5B and the main reason is that I don't do the techniques right. Now I've been climbing for about 4 months I feel strong enough to start working on overhangs a bit more and the last part of this video was quite useful for that. I always forget how to flag properly and which foot I need to move which hand. I think after a bit of practice my instincts will kick in, but right now I really need to think about it properly.

    • @hannahmorrisbouldering
      @hannahmorrisbouldering  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good luck levelling up your game on overhangs. They're definitely a different challenge but I think steeper terrain is where more advanced techniques really make a huge difference. Dialling in your technique intentionally will really help it to become a natural process as you progress :)
