      Hey how’d it go?😍i bet you’d have a lot to say with the comment being a year old. I’m looking into possibly moving there for a masters probram at the school. Mostly for me, the biggest 2 issues would be thats it’s not a big city - I’ve never lived somewhere that isn’t a big city, but I also adore small towns and nature/hiking and spend a lot of time doing that. Julian, CA is my happy place to get a break from the city. But I still don’t know what it’s like to live in a place that isn’t a city. I’m used to my michellin star restaurant delivery at 10pm .. or my burrito drive thru at 3 am. Or being able to get whatever thing I wanted by going shopping because I can find anything and everything I want. I hope it’s not too bad? The other concern is rain. Although right now I think I love rain because I never get it, so many people say that 300 days of clouds is just too much and is going to need some getting used to coming from sunny-70-degrees-literally-every-day-of-the-year socal😅would mean a lot for you (and anyone else!) to respond :) thanks

    After my first visit, I would agree with the video. I saw a lot of rain the first 2 weeks I was there but never a torrential rain. Don't mind the rain but didn't like the colder weather. The beaches (coast) are beautiful, clean and uncrowded but the ocean is too cold to swim in (I tried). Bus transportation service is well designed and free.
    Like any desirable city, the cost of living goes up. The small towns nearby have a lot more affordable housing and are a 10 to 15 minute drive to Corvallis.
    I've lived in a few major cities before and have to say I felt very safe in Corvallis. I notice people are comfortable letting their guard down. People in most of the cities of Oregon are much friendlier than other states, particularly Corvallis where it almost seems like a competition in politeness and respect. A few times I saw cars at a 4-way intersection all waiting for the other person to "go first". I've lived in Hawaii for 20 years and have to say there is way more "aloha" in Corvallis than anywhere I've been in Hawaii.

    I'm from Sacramento, California and I hardly see rain here! Not to mention every year there's talk of drought because of this lack of rain. I'm tired of hearing about it. Oregon or Washington State has my attention. It's not too far from California and I absolutely love their rainy and cloudy weather.

    • @kbanghart
      @kbanghart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I live near Sacramento myself, I'm in Rancho Cordova, and I feel the same, less and less rain. I agree about Oregon and Washington, my only issue is, where the heck will I live based on what I can afford lol.

      @@kbanghart I've looked at home prices throughout most of Oregon and I discovered Salem and Albany have the most affordable housing in W. Oregon. Salem is similar to Sacramento since they are both capitals and diverse. E. Oregon is the most affordable parts of Oregon. However, I have no desire to live in the east. Too dry there. W. Oregon is more rainier.

    I grew up there in the 80s and early 90s so when I went to visit again in the 2000s it was almost unrecognizable. I guess that's everywhere though. I just remember it being Beavertown it's the college town for the OSU beavers and you can bike everywhere basically which is very true and bring your dog everywhere I remember that and I remember people so friendly you wave hi to random strangers on the street or even when driving around. They have all kinds of activities and festivals all the time at the parks to enjoy. Downtown has all kinds of shops to go to. I remember Avery Park and that was a lot of fun as a kid. Yes it rains every day but it never really pours like you would see in Florida where it's like a tropical storm or insane strong rain or sideways rain. It's kind of a light rain and I remember there's only about 2 months of Summer which is nice too you get all the beautiful Four Seasons unlike Florida which has nasty bipolar weather. People are a lot friendlier from what I remember in Oregon then Florida as well. I would say the only problem is that people can be extremely opinionated in Oregon. There are lots of art galleries as well. Swimming is also big here if you like indoor and outdoor pools.

    So honestly I've been in Corvallis with my wife 4/2 and a half years now oh, and coming this may we're leaving to go to Texas. We came up here because her children from a previous marriage live here, but on our income Corvallis unfortunately is not affordable for us. The only advice I'd give anyone moving to Corvallis is to make sure that you can afford to live here. The housing cost can be an issue, and if you don't have a car getting around outside of Corvallis can be difficult. BTW we don't have a car, so it makes it difficult for us to go anywhere. This is a good town, but it's just too expensive for us.

      @@kbanghart we decided not to move to Texas due to the power grid issues from back in February, and also because of the current political situation. So we are staying in Oregon for now. Housing cost is the biggest expense in Corvallis. And the job market is somewhat small. Also not alot of shopping options.

    • @kbanghart
      @kbanghart 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thumper79 yeah that's understandable. That's why my wife and I will be downsizing quite a lot if we move to a rural area, either Oregon, Idaho maybe Washington, not sure. Right now we are paying around 38% of our take home to our mortgage, so hopefully we can get that down to about 20 or maybe even lower. If we have decent internet, one or both of us can work from home. How is the internet service there? And What percentage of your take home goes to housing, if you don't mind me asking.

    • @Thumper79
      @Thumper79 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kbanghart we were renting, and the rent was over 50% of household income. Unfortunately my wife is the only one that can work right now and it was taking up half of her pay. As for the internet we had internet through Xfinity and the speed was decent for what we paid for. When we leave Oregon we plan on heading for the Midwest. Looking at Nebraska because housing costs there is pretty reasonable.

      Hi! Lifetime Corvallis resident here…😊
      I will tell you that Corvallis has more expensive rentals/ housing. Eugene has more affordable rental options, and you can rent a home for the price of an apartment here in Corvallis. Corvallis is safer, but there are not the nightlife spots that Eugene has. We have a lot of local shops, but no real big box stores. You can go to Albany for some big box options. Both cities are college towns. Both cities are liberal leaning politically, and feel quite similar in culture. Eugene has two malls for better shopping options. Eugene is quite a bit bigger, and more spread out in area. Corvallis is a slower pace. Eugene has a more thriving art scene, and a really awesome Saturday market. Corvallis reminds me of a smaller, and slower Eugene. I can think of many similarities in these two cities. I do notice that in the summer during wildfire season, Eugene is hit by a lot more smoky air. I hope this helped a little!

I've never lived in such a cold community of people. That has been a huge turn off for us. There is also no shopping or activities to speak of unless you drive to Albany, Euguene, or Salem. We are now searching for a city with a friendlier vibe. All in all, it's been a huge disappointment.

    The only good thing about Portland is PDX. Fly in, get out and enjoy Oregon, then get out. I would never chose to spend any more time than that in a city that large. I don't even think about it as being part of Oregon, just a depot.
    From my checking, it seems northwest Corvallis, in the hills, gets the most rain by a good measure. That's where I would like to be. Don't they sell rainsuits there?
    No, biking in the rain wouldn't be much fun.
    Not much interest in nightlife at my age (old). I used to go out 2-3 times per week, but I quit the bar scene before you guys were born.
    When you say rentals are high, is that across the board? What about a small mobile home?
    Where I'm from, buying has been cheaper than renting for decades.
    I don't give a damn about team sports, but university towns tend to be generally more progressive, and that appeals to me.
    I've spent three weeks combined on driving vacations in coastal Oregon, including Corvallis vicinity. Probably my favorite place on Earth, but not having actually lived there...well, you've got to live somewhere to really know it. That's why I watched your video.
    Some of your Cons are my Pros, heh.
    I hope I can drop a link to my Oregon videos: The first one is 'only' 50 minutes long. The second is 5.5 hours!

      Riots and fires?? If you are talking about political unrest--the most you will see in Corvallis is a march around campus or the Farmer's Market holding signs and chanting, every few months. The "riots" are almost all in a three-block area in Portland very late at night. Not going to affect you unless you go looking for it. The wildfire smoke last summer drifted into all parts of the state, but there was no danger of actual fire to Corvallis.

    very narrow perspectives here, I am from SoCal and have lived here since 1991, there is sun only 3 to 4 mos., out of the year, you have to drive 1.5 for a decent mall, the food is NOT good, except for a few exceptions, compared to the Bay Area and SoCal. Obv if you lived here your whole life there is nothing to compare to, and Iowa isn't even close to the west coast or a place most can relate to. The weather here absolutely sucks and I don't recommend the Willamette Valley to anyone that cares about sunshine or convenience. By the way, it IS NOT ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF RAIN, it's about the cloud cover, darkness, short days, grey skies, extremely depressing. People that live here their whole lives and leave cannot believe what it feels like to feel normal after they have left, where they get normal amounts of sun and light to their brains. It's beautiful for a few months, but at what price? It's not worth it imo. Rain 15 days straight? try like 4 mos. straight. Are you kidding me? This year I had to wait 3 mos. for a day that had at least 4 hours of no rain to work on my car. It was fucking insane. They main thing is from mid October until April it can be overcast, grey, dark, short days, you feel like youre 10 feet underground, its intolerable at times, and not worth it. Then when the days finally get longer in mid-April and May, it rains like every day. the only good thing to me is the water is excellent, air is usually good, and hiking trails are good. As far as produce, I really differ on that, too. There isn't enough sun to grow really good quality fruits like you can do in Cali, besides maybe cherries, blueberries and apples. Otherwise good luck. Strawberries are very inferior, cant grow citrus, peaches are not sweet comparably, etc. You have to redo gardens and replant every year and growing season isn't that long. In Cali, you can leave and regrow lettuce, other root veggies etc., and grow pretty much year round. MUCH better growing climate for most vegetable and fruit gardens. Oh I see now, they are realtors. The political climate is very liberal, except for a good amount of Mormon's, they are a big part of the Corvallis school District board here, just saying. It's safe for raising children, which is nice, however it is sheltered, and when they leave it's somewhat shocking for them. Portland is a good 1.5 hours by the time you actually get to your destination, park, etc. The coast is pretty but often cold damp and very windy, and not suitable for swimming in the ocean, it is too wild, too much weather.

      i voted to legalize your way of life even though i'm not part of it. why can't you accept my way of life weather you're involved or not. you need to learn to open your mind & open your heart.

      @@kbanghart ah.. its been like 8months so its not fresh on my memory, but i had a question that most likely pertained to cannabis, i think it was something like "are there any good dispensaries in corvallis" and someone had responded to my comment & we had started a little conversation back and forth on my comment, we were both being respectful & courteous to others, not selling or soliciting anything just simply discussing the "hippie" culture in very modest terms.. apparently the op of the video isn't too fond of oregons liberal laws (excluding the ones that benefit themselves) and decided to remove the entire conversation.. literally in the middle of it. i don't think they like pot smokers is the short version lol

      So do you live in Oregon now? Which part? How much rain do you get? My wife and I are thinking of some part of Oregon, Idaho or WA to move to, but it has to be something very small bc we need to keep our housing cost as low as possible, of course like everyone else lol. Right now our mortgages crazy high but that's partly because of the property tax built in, and the mortgage insurance. But our next house we hope to finance a much smaller amount, with a good down payment.

      @@kbanghart oregon is pretty expensive wherever you go.. i guess if you are xoming from somewhere like California or new york then it wont seem to expensive. not really a place to move to save money.. if you're trying to avoid the rain then bend hardly has rain but its very pricey there. i used to live in a town called dallas oregon it was very small & the cheapest place i lived in oregon, but it did rain all the time. i Don't actually live in oregon at the moment so i wont be much help other than that. good luck in your adventure though! :)

    It's interesting that you show the Whiteside and then say that everything is closed at 8PM. The footage you used is clearly from right as the pandemic was starting, and we're open and hosting all kinds of events after 8PM. Perhaps you don't know your city as well as you think you do.
