    Hi Pav !! First of all, thanks for the great content you do for us. Got a question i need help with. I am looking to buy a prime lens for mainly portrait photography. At this point i've been thinking on a 85mm, but i found it a bit tight and sometimes i'd like a few environmental photos as well. So, been thinking on the Sigma 35mm f1.4 dg dn or Sigma 50mm hsm which i am abit affraid of it's autofocus performance not beeing a dn. Could you please help me decide ? Or if you have any other suggestions i am listening.
    Many thanks

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!
      I always find 85mm too tight and 35mm too wide for portrait.
      I love Sigma 50mm HSM and it still does work pretty well on modern cameras but you have other options available in this price range. Sony 55mm Zeiss is great.
      It's hard to advice which lens is right for you though, you can only decide.

    • @bondgabebond4907
      @bondgabebond4907 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Autofocus is OK but it can be fooled a lot. I have that same problem so it's off to manual focus. Heck, when I did photography in the past with manual cameras like the Nikon F2 or Canon FTb, it was all manual and I had the greatest success in getting things in proper focus. Don't let automation override you. Relying on automation is crippling.

    I checked Dustin Abbott review and he said he haven't seen any chromatic aberration, maybe there is inconsistent copies in pre production?
    Also how is the chromatic aberration in this lens compared with the Sony GM f1.4 and the Sigma 85mm DG DN?

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is definitely chromatic aberration visible. It's just the same as with all modern premium lenses wide open. I'd say that it is noticeable but not distracting or impossible to fix in post.

    Thanks for an answer and greeting from Switzerland! Keep it up

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    But what does it specifically improve on over the original Sigma 35 mm 1.4. I own the original and don't see a significant enough Improvement to upgrade. What are your thoughts? I'm aiming for the G master instead of upgrading to this new Sigma and looking for improved AF tracking

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have both here right now and the new version is marginally sharper.
      It is smaller, tiny bit lighter and you do have focus hold button and de-clicked aperture ring.
      AF performance is pretty much the same on a7III from both. DG DN lenses has got new designed, quieter focusing mechanism so technically it is better - in real life, hard to tell the difference.

      All current wide aperture primes (with very few exceptions) show chromatic aberration. It is NOT uncommon. It varies from lens to lens how much of the colour fringing you get but it is fairly easy to fix in post.

    I've got the DSLR version of the lens. I mount it on the Canon EOS 70D. As a crop sensor DSLR, it turns into a 56mm lens. Exceptional lens and super sharp. Although on the crop sensor DSLR, it's still a very fast lens and because I'm fortunate enough to have a DSLR that smacks the AF bang on every time, the Sigma line of lenses is built for the Canon EOS.
    I will NEVER invest my hard earned dollars on a Canon lens. Why?? Sigma is Canon's biggest competitor and at a fraction of the cost, why would I??

    Hi Pav, I found it interesting that you're a 50mm photo guy, who prefer 35mm for video. It got me thinking that it has to do with framing and 16/9 video crop of the 35mm? I tried to setup my camera on a tripod and compared 35mm and 50mm in the same scene, it turns out, 35mm 16/9 isn't that much wider than 50mm, if you focus on the center/ height of the scene.

    I think we could say a 35mm for 3/2 photo is roughly equivalent of a 44mm f1.7 when shooting 16/9 video? Perhaps that's why you prefer the 35mm for video, it's really not all that different from 50mm for photos..

      Interesting! (can't open your link 😕 )
      I've been using 50mm as my main focal length for 20 years now and I just feel at home with it. I know the distance I need to be away from my subject for the right framing without looking through the camera.
      35mm feels like that to me when filming.
      For photography 35mm is just not tight enough most of the time to me. Don't get me wrong, I could switch to 35mm today full time and I'd make it work, it's just 50mm feels more natural for me

      @@PavSZ Hmm, I'm not sure why you can't open the link, it worked for a couple of other people, but I emailed it. As I see it, 35mm in 16/9 is like a 44mm with a bit more added in the sides.

    It`s always a super lens half the price of another super lens.
    That`s because it`s no superlens at all.
    It`s bigger, heavier, has more ca and poor quality control.
    It seems sharper but it isn`t. It`s just a hard bluish rendering typical for sigma.
    I have the GM now and it`s way better and easily worth the extra.

      maybe but not everyone can afford GM lens (my review of it coming this week)

      @@PavSZ I know it`s expensive. But you get what you pay for.
      I don`t think the sigma is competition either way.

    The GM 35 is better

      how?

    • @johnadams3038

      @@PavSZ Better physical design, lighter, more compact, sharpness (especially close focus sharpness, the GM decisively better), out fo focus background transition and less busy bokeh. The premium price you pay for the GM is worth it. Also not to forget, the linear-type AF motors of the GM are a class of their own, the Sigma just can’t compete in the AF department against the GM.
