On my latest video asking for video ideas someone asked for a video on how to prepare for getting a German shepherd puppy and someone else asked for a video on what i did with Saber in the first couple of weeks. me and my wife are getting a shepherd and i was wondering how long was it before he was left alone in the house for long periods of time ( going to work for example) I am nervous because we will both be home all day for the first 8 days we have him but then we will be gone at work and it isn't always easy to get home throughout the day….just wondering how that went for you?

it's just amazing how fast they learn. Mine is 12 weeks and at 10 weeks he knew sit, lay down, bed (get on his bed and lay down) and to get in his kennel. It's crazy.

My pup is 11 weeks at the moment, and she's a working line so I am exhausted haha. Definitely agree that research on breeders and the breed is so important. I researched for over a year before I got her!

He's such a beautiful GSD, I love how proud you are of him too :) Can tell that's going to be your best bud for many years to come. I have a Shepherd/Husky mix who's about 95-100 lbs and he's the best dog I've ever had. Sadly he does have hip issues, one of his back legs has arthritis and his other has hip dysplasia, he just turned 10 and still wants to play fetch even with his bad legs. Saber kind of reminds me of my dog, no so much by how he looks but in the way he's so playful and the looks he gives you at times. My dog was also house trained very early, actually when we got him he was 9 weeks old and he was already trained to use the wee pads and never really had any accidents.

clojap my dog too has arthritis in the hind legs to the point where it pains him some days to walk on it. he was given shots of something like cortisone (I think it's called) but the dog version to help out along with vitamins and minerals to slow the progress of the arthritis

There are a few things you forgot to mention. Parents should not only have hip scores but also Elbows, DM, VWD, Thyroid and Eyes. Parents should also have titles. They should also be members of the Kennel/Breed Club. Personally since I have owned this breed if not feeding raw I suggest putting the pup on Adult food, you don't want them to grow faster then they should. Also just wanted to say that HD is not just hereditary. Other causes are Exercise and Neutrition. Also people thinking of getting this breed should also research Bloat and Panosteitis. Hope this has helped

You suggest giving a puppy adult food? I am in the process of getting a GS puppy so open to all opinions!! I have not heard this before (:

Charli Abraham bit late but yeah at 5 or 6 months (talk to a vet) you want to start them on adult food so there bones grow slower. If their bones grow too quickly their growth plates might come in wrong. They are more prone to hip and elbow displacia (sp?) as are a lot of large breed dogs.

Yeah I slept next to my puppy GSD in her crate for about 10 nights ....so good because she was house trained in a week and also her crate became her safe home to eat dinner and also made her respect my property...no chewing!

LOVED THE VIDEO! This is Arie, the first female i've ever had and she's a rescue. Had to get another one after my Gus passed away from seizures. You're absolutely right they are super smart and have to be challenged and trained. Arie has some issues because I believe she was abused as a puppy. Regardless, she's in a loving home and I get that back ten fold.

Great video! I always enjoy watching your gsd grow in each video:)) I'm planning on getting a German shepherd soon but idk how he will react with my golden retriever:( hopefully all will work out since usually Holden's are less territorial and more towards the welcoming side lol
Lucky for me I know that where I will get my German shepherd from in the future is 150% trusted. It's my mums cousins 😄 and she has been breeding for years and does not over breed dogs, they are pure gsds and she gives certificates and loads of information to leave with your puppy, she also gives hip scores on all her dogs, I'm so happy I have her place to go to because I know it is 100% legit.

just want to say its great to see how much effort u put into your german sheperd to actually raise it right instead of turning it into a mean bad educated loose canon...hats off to that. i myselve have had sheperds for 22 years now. dutch shorthair ones.
(well i am dutch myselve so..:)) first one died at 15 years of age and the current one is 7 now.i always loved the german sheperd but have been reluctant to get one due to the many cases of HD amongst other health issues.
the dutch sheperd doesnt have many health issues due to the fact that it hasnt been breed so much.there still close to the origin and therefore issues like HD are pretty much non excistent with dutchies.
nevertheless i find the german sheperd a great dog in wich i see so many similarities compaired to my own best friend.
i hope and trust u will have a great time to come with your dog and i will keep watching your channel.

Luka Martin duitse herders hebben veel last van heup dyslexie .het is lastig om een fokker te vinden die 100 procent hd vrije pups aanbied. mechelse en hollandse herders hebben daar nauwelijks last van. ik heb overigens een Hollandse herder. nu 7 jaar oud. de vorige is 15 jaar geworden...dat ga je met een duitse herder vast niet halen zo n leeftijd.

Do it - they'll be less aggressive if you neutre them. And they'll probably end up having puppies somehow if you don't and you'll end up with mixed breed shepherds and you wont want the work of tons more puppies so you'll just give them away. Imagine having like 5 of Saber? Haha

Hey, have seen your latest videos. Really helpful. I'm planning to get a German Shepherd puppy in the first week of January. The breeder said only after 2months do we get the puppy, calculating comes to 3-4th of Jan. We have seen the mother and the father of the puppies. Our first dog and we are so excited. thanks alot cheers
I’ve been wanting one for over two and a half years lol. Maybe even three years. But I use to have a Greatdain but we moved and found her a new home. I honestly was so young so I didn’t understand that I’d never see her again. It’s been like 8 years since then and now I’m much older I know what’s required now. :) I don’t plan on getting one from a breeder I’m going to rescue one. From LA GS rescue group. Im waning to get a younger one because my sister does have a cat as well. Also I’d like to watch my future dog grow up and develop. One of the great things about getting a dog is watching them grow up:)

Once I graduate and go into an apartment that allows pets, I'm getting a German Shepard. I'm a small female and I love the breed at least for the fact they are loyal and protective. But then for the part of living with them they seem like so much fun and such sweethearts. I just adore this breed. Lol. (Also as puppy's they're fluffy cubes and it's so freaking adorable)

You should try the Kong extreme ball. It's pretty durable. My GSD destroyed all the other ones in less than 2 hours!! This one is still here and it's been a month now hope this helps.
lucky dog I know right!! My golden mini doodle (a mix of a Golden retrevier and a mini poodle ) can chew a GIANT tennis ball in 5 minutes...

Where I live German Shepherds are very expensive $700-$1000 range but I got one very awesome deal for my little Jada we saw both parents both very beautiful with perfect health records and we got her for about $300 us

i love german shepherds so much. i want a working dog as my.next dog and im trying to figure if i should go with a german shepherd (working line) or a Belgian malinois. i need to figure out which is better for my family.

GSD. I can guarantee that you will love it more then yourself like I loved mine. Very gentle, smart and patient with kids to.

Does he ever destroy soft toys? My GSD is 6mo old and she gnashes her teeth on soft toys (and even one of my blankets) until she makes a hole in it. She then proceeds to pull out the stuffing. I even got her a stuffingless frog and she has eaten a lot of the edges of the toy.
Are there things about having a GSD pup that you found to be irritating or frustrating? For me the biggest thing has been learning to focus her energy. Before I knew how to play and work with her, I got frustrated pretty often and wonder if you had any similar issues.

Hahaha, I love Kong toys, but she still managed to destroy 2 of the ballistic footballs. She does well with the rubber treat toy though. I stuff it with frozen peanut butter and she is happy for hours, rolling around with it.
I had a German Shepard that was (I think) from a working line. Met both parents which worked on a fishing territory. Max was all black, stood like a coffee table, and needed to run for at least one walk to wear him out. So alert and on it. If Saber is active I’d say my max was completely mental and hard work. Saber is better behaved than my Max
Ps we put a stair gate up almost immediately. Basically max almost fell down the stairs (you take your eyes off a German Shepard puppy for 30 seconds!). Plus when he got older he was so nosey that upstairs wasn’t dog proof. He was allowed upstairs so long as someone was around to supervisor him. Despite that he still peed against my bed the loveable knob

Hi. I pick up a miss homed GSD on Tuesday, he is 8 months old and has been brought up by a old woman and the dog is too strong for her. So I have offered to be his new home as I was a dog handler in the army. Can you give me any advice and information on the best way to train a non working dog?

I litterally bought him how he said not to do it. I found him for a good price talked to the breeder and then got sent photos of him and his parents. And were meetimg halfway bc he wanted to meet at his house but hes coming into town so were meeting halfway-

Anirban Roy Hi Anirban, i would start feeding raw straight away and don't mix kibble and raw. go straight into raw as mixing can cause the dogs tummy to be more upset than it needs to be. Your dog might experience runny poos for a few days but this will clear up very fast. I would feed a 8 week old puppy 3 times a day until 6 months then down to 2 times a day. Hope this helps.
