Fake Food Covers Empty Grocery Store Shelves to Hide Shortages

  • Stores are doing their best not to draw customers’ attention to the fact that shelves are much emptier than they usually are. Some stores are filling shelves with large, out of season items like camping chairs, or “decoys” of real products. One store went so far as to cover the shelves with a sheet that had a photo of fully stocked shelves printed on it. Shopping expert Phil Lempert says that there’s a method to the deception, as empty shelves can spark panic and cause people to start hoarding.

I worked there before covid though and know for a fact that their shelves have always had massive empties half the time while a bunch of stock was stuffed in the backroom because they could never get the staffing. They'd always hire stockers and then move them to the front registers when things got busy without ever properly training them as cashiers. Most new hires never lasted long... which makes sense, if they wanted the cashier job, they'd apply for the cashier job. (and no one applied for the cashier jobs in part because they were paid less for much higher stress)

For the big companies, if you remember in the beginning of Covid there was limit in most major retailers limiting the purchase of many items from meat to paper products. The real demand in most areas this video doesn’t show is not as high as that time was, but there still is no control and with fewer products being produced there’s nothing a store can do until they do start taking the same procedures they did with Covid.

I work at Walmart right now, and my shift is from 2 to 11pm. And from 5pm to the end of my shift I have to go through every aisle, pull product to the front and make it appear neater and fuller. They call it "zoning" or "flexing". The shelves will be full again by morning but in that time in the evening when people get off work and need to shop, they want the store to look full. I havent seen a shortage of products though. The store is always full again by the time the night shift is done stocking the store. And they restock again around the time my shift starts.

It wouldn't matter a lot of people need food and home supplies everyday so everything would still eventually start running out.
Rationing a limited amount of stuff only works for so long when that limited amount of stuff is still needed everyday more and more...it's all going to run eventually out no matter how you try to save it especially among a lot of people who all need more of it everyday.
If someone can only buy one carton of milk at a time well as soon as that carton runs out at home they will be RIGHT BACK for another carton now apply that same principal to everybody who come in and out of a grocery store everyday for what they need AS OFTEN as they need it again and again and trying to ration everything doesn't work when something runs out at home everyone is just coming RIGHT BACK to buy more of what they need your store is still going to run out.
