I drove this thing, Soviet build Uaz, over 10000 km during my military service back in 80's. Very simple piece of equipment. To service it you only needed a hammer and a sickle. On the road it was hideous but it was magnificen off roader. It almost climbed on a tree and run well in 1m deep snow. I hated it every second.

That's a UAZ-469 and it was designed to be a military vehicle: Rugged, bare bones in terms of features, reliable and easy to maintain. From what I've read the UAZ-469 was an absolute monster offroad and when it came to climbing. Clarkson looking for features like adjustable seats on it is like looking for 0-60 mph in 3,5 seconds acceleration on a lorry.

Don't forget the glorious spare fuel tank feature! If you ever overestimate your offroad capabilities and slam one side of the car into a tree cracking one of the fuel tanks or confuse the green monster with a moose when hunting and shoot through one then you can always just toggle a switch on the dashboard to engage the pump in the tank on the opposite side of the vehicle and just keep going.
And did I mention the main battery disconnect switch? Even if your electric system is corroded and full of mud and dirty water you will still never drain the battery through current leakage as you just physically disconnect it from 99.9% of the circuits when parked. It will always be ready to start and go even in the most difficult conditions.

It's a true military vehicle - after all, the driver had to wage a constant, losing war against one of the most stubborn gear sticks ever invented. Other features were the canvas roof that was always filled with tiny icicles and the mysterious second fuel tank that no one knew whether it worked and/or did anything. Coupled with other fun misadventures with it such as trying to decipher what the hell all the dials and other gubbins that were either written in Cyrillic (which nobody understood) or post-it note translations said in the middle of the night I could say that this car was certainly an experience.

As far as I know this yoke doesn't have a synchronized gearbox. That's why it rattles like that when changing the gear and Clarkson simply doesn't know how to change the gears properly on such a thing. It's a military car and simplicity and reliability (which it used to have) go first, driving comfort second. In the time of war you need a car that won't break and if it does you repair it with minimal means of field conditions. So, Clarkson, learn to double-clutch and try again.

+Revolutionary Socialist Media Even by military car this thing was horrible, exept by the fact it could run on the worst fuel possible, it was verry good in off road and i think it was pretty realible. If you are wondering why it was not good for military use, check out the space in the car, puting 4 or 5 guys there holding they assault rifles would be a nightmare, not to mention if you needed to take extra equipement, or maybe carry a RPK or a SVD. It was pretty good to take soldiers from A to B or for a patrol car in peace times or small conflict zones. It would need a bigger transport vehicle if you want to carry a proper squad fully equiped for combat. However, this is my opinion based on what i know about the vehicle, it does not mean what i'm saying is completly true.

US and UK pushing the envelop of weapon innovation during the cold war and had been involve in other for the last 50 years in middle east also had something to do with it (though instead of using a portion of it to pushing the envelop of infrastructure is much better in my opinion)

+brunoraoni Reliable it was not. The few good thing about this car were its exceptional off road capabilities (for the time), mechanical simplicity, and abundance of spare parts (in the ex-Soviet countries, plus many parts were shared with other Soviet cars and trucks).
The soviet military once calculated, than such a vehicle won't survive more than a few minutes on the battlefield, so they were considered an expendable item, and built as cheaply as possible, so anything that could go wrong, went wrong.
For example, it was completely normal for their engines and gearboxes to leak oil, and every driver knew that if there's no oil leak, there is simply no oil left in the engine.

    - Windows go down, and when they do, they won't go up anymore
    - No spare tire
    - the car jack is simply a block of solid wood
    - Handbrake doesn't work
    - It won't go into 5th gear
    - Air Conditioner broken
    - No power steering
    - Suspension is busted
    - Chassis is fractured
    - The key fell off the socket while driving. I then realized that you can shove any key and it'll start the ignition.
    - Car seats wont adjust
    - If the engine revs high enough, the exhaust will enter the car
    - brakes need to be pumped to work
    - The horn is your only luxury
    - Tachometer doesn't work
    - Fuel gauge amazingly still works!
    - Distributor needs to be sandpapered before starting it
    - Side mirrors and rear view mirrors are duct taped and shake as the car is moving.
I can't believe I survived taking that thing to the scrap yard.

In the war in the former Yugoslavia the UN had one of these that wouldn't run. It was in territory controlled by the Montenegrins. The UN soldiers asked me if I could take a look at it. When I got to the former army base where it sat I opened the hood. 1942 Dodge! I couldn't believe it. Lend Lease was alive and kicking. The two UN officers made a quick check to be sure it hadn't been booby trapped while I tried to find the problem. Turned out it was your basic high school parking lot prank….coil wire unplugged, plug wires scrambled. I straightened it out and it fired right up. When the Montenegrins at the checkpoint saw me coming they cheered wildly. "It takes an American to fix a Russian car!" shouted one. Although this is not a great jeep it's not hopeless. I just watched Top Gear on Land Rover Defender (technically nearly identical to this UAZ), and oh boy, what a different review, so many nice words of respect and gratitude to its iconic simplicity and functionality🤔. Amazing, two cars that are practically the same can be described so differently.

@@Deltairony824 I was working on one last week, we restore military equipment, battle tanks personal carriers and so on, and we have a Land Rover Defender, we use it to get parts and tools for the shop, it's a fun car but comparing to UAZ, UAZ is probably a bit more complex, but not by much. In their concept they are basically the same!

Where this UAZ can go, the USA HMMWV would shit it's pants. And yes, it has no synchro-mesh (that's where the gearchange "issues" come from), so you have to double-clutch and play with the throttle. You see - i'm from eastern europe, and we have hundreds of those 50+ years old machines still climbing hills up and down like goats! And i've yet to see other cars live to the age of even 30, and still work with little to none maintenacnce... So stop spitting on russian cars! I know a lot of americans start complaining when they get a car with no hydraulics, auto transmission and air conditioning... but that's because they're so used to luxury, that they've gotten lazy and stupid! :) Plain and simple! U want to go offroad - you have to try this old grandpa!
Low gears, differential lock, tough suspension, high clearance - it's got it all and more!

the best way to park it in the snow was simply to pick up speed and crash into a parking space which has a pile of snow on it, only problem is getting out and if there may be a small ZAZ 894 under the pile of snow. Otherwise it should be fine. I did that all the time! Although if there is a car under the snow..... you are much likely not notice it. Whoops. ^-^

The classic model sort of does, for nostalgia value. Although it's revamped inside and of course has basic safety and comfort features (as you could expect in a military-geek vehicle like a civilian humvee). Most models are styled (quite poorly) as modern SUVs, and basically are. The original was a good military jeep, I can't say anything about the modern ones, but they are reasonably popular.
