Travel Diaries: A Magical Day in Wat Phnom, Phnom Penh Cambodia

Wat Phnom, which translates to 'Mountain Pagoda', is one of the most important temples in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Built in 1373, it stands at 27 meters, making it the tallest religious structure in the city.
The pagoda was erected to house four sacred statues of Buddha that were discovered by a woman named Penh. Legend has it that the statues were found inside a large koki tree floating down the Mekong river, which led Penh to construct a small hill (‘Phnom’ in Khmer) and a small temple (‘Wat’ in Khmer) to protect the statues. The city itself derives its name from the legend of Lady Penh.
The site features a central temple, with a large stupa containing the relics of Buddha, peaceful gardens blooming with flowers, statues depicting the Buddha at various stages of his life, and a shrine dedicated to Lady Penh.
The hilltop temple is an important place of worship for the locals and offers fascinating insights into the city's historical and cultural heritage. It is also a popular venue for festivals, especially during Khmer New Year and Pchum Ben, the festival of the dead.
