I work for Mclaren as a Technician. If you fill all 8L into the engine in one go during an oil change it will overflow internally and cause a smoke show. Start with 6.5L then run it and go through the top up procedure.
Matt check the oil drains from the turbos, there could be an issue with them draining oil back to the sump, this will send oil straight past the turbo seals in to the exhaust. I worked on the 570’s GT4 cars, we blew an engine in qualifying at donington, we fitted a new engine over night from the mclaren spares truck, they had left a bung in one of the turbo drains, the smoke we got was 10x worse than what’s coming from your car. It could also just be the turbo seals. Hope this helps

Firstly I will say, I absolutely love these videos over the years and the optimism even when things are not going your way is so admirable! With regards to the gearbox issue - I am far from a mechanic but a small thing I will mention - my friend has 2022 M4 Competition and it would have an issue where when reversing out of his driveway, it would randomly decide to not select a gear or when turning around it would get stuck in neutral. After 10 months of diagnostics it turned out to be a faulty seatbelt sensor as the car would not select a gear if the seatbelt was not "on" (plugged in). Would it be possible that your car is not selecting a gear because the pyro fuse/ airbags have gone off like you said earlier in the video, and the seatbelts need to be sent off to be reset? I could be wrong, but worth a mention! All the best and I look forward to the next one!
Yea, actual faults can sometimes be something totally unrelated to the "problem". I had an ABS/ESP light on on my Peugeot a few years ago, and the dealer wanted to replace the ABS pump for £1,000, even though the ABS was working fine, so I ran away, quickly. I eventually figured out that the problem was a stuck EGR. Basically the car didn't know the position of the EGR valve, so it couldn't calculate a torque value; which was needed for the ESP system to work. And the previous owner had blocked the EGR and deleted the parts of the code in the ECU responsible for EGR faults, so that the car wouldn't give any EGR faults. It was annoying, but it was really satisfying to logically trace the fault and find the problem.
Your dad's enthusiasm is so contagious Matt even though you are going through problems on the build he keeps it 💯 I just love that he sees the light at the end of the tunnel
Discovered this channel a few weeks ago. Massive respect for the amount of technical knowledge and determination! Funny to see you laugh at all the smoke where I would be definately crying.
Matt you are a huge inspiration to us all and a major reason I finally started my TH-cam channel. Been here since the wrecked TT and have loved watching your growth so much. Bummed I didn't get to meet you at SEMA, but excited to keep watching your journey. Thanks for the inspiration 🙏🏻
The smoke looks like burning oil. This can happen with McLarens when they sit for a long time as the oil leaks into the turbos. Let it run for a bit and see if it starts to improve. Could save you from taking the engine out.
that smoke from the engine maybe disappointing right now but those things what makes others stop or give up but anyone who watching your channel are certain you gonna find a solution anyway and thats why your channel is truly great cause you guys never give up! :) Wish you all the best to find the solution this time as well!
They would know if the smoke was oil, because it would smell like burnt oil. The white exhaust smoke was almost certainly coolant. The fact it was coming out both exhausts (ie both banks) indicates it’s not something affecting just one bank. It’s extremely unlikely for both turbos to fail in the same way, and also extremely unlikely for both head gaskets to fail. So it must be something ‘upstream’ of that. Somehow coolant is making its way into the intake system for both banks.
Might wanna check turbos. Not sure if these are cooled with coolant but many modern turbo cars have coolant in the turbos. Could also be oil from turbos. Obviously we can’t smell the smoke to know for sure which fluids burning😂. With no hydrocarbons in the reservoir it seems odd for it to be head, but you never know. Just an idea. Maybe it’ll help. Love the vids Mat keep it up.
Love watching this come together. I'm guessing you've already checked it, but I remember VTuned's 720S smoking a lot and it turned out that it was just overfilled with oil.
Had this on a Jeep I bought. Guy had swapped out the engine with one from a breaker and it did just this. I bought it as he had run out of money and considered it a knackered engine. What I couldn't work out, is how it tested fine for head gasket yet was quite obviously blowing out coolant. Yours reminded me of it. What had happened with the Jeep was his garage that fitted it had mistakenly put a vacuum breather and a coolant pipe the wrong around. That threw coolant into the turbo and doing what yours is doing. billowed white smoke, but head testing fine. Retrace all the pipes and make sure this hasn't happened in some part of this system. Nothing to lose but time. Good Luck - hoping it is this simple for you.
I really enjoy your videos because you don't always show when things go well. It's more realistic seeing all the process, not knowing if they going to make it through. Congrats. I'm sure you will find the way, you always do.
Genuinely my favourite channel on TH-cam at the moment. Highs and lows in every video. Laughs in every video. Even the sponsorship ads are actually incorporated into the video. Keep up the good work Mat, Mat’s dad and everyone else involved in this craziness.
Try bypassing the oil / coolant feeds to the turbos. If the charge cooler is dry, I’d guess whatever it is that’s making the smoke (looks like oil smoke to me) is getting into the exhaust through the turbines. Good luck, peace out and thanks for the awesome channel, don’t stop! 👍👍👍
I thought that too, but it’s very light colored and not to mention if it was oil smoke they would smell burnt oil and not be looking for misplaced water lines. Hopefully it’s not a cracked sleeve and just a gasket.
Well done for getting so much done! Honestly with all your other projects and galavanting around the world, I don't know where you find the time! But hats off to you and your Dad and the team. From the colour of that exhaust I'd say it's burning oil not water. Especially as it blew the oil cap off. I'd recommend you start with some compression checks. It could also be as simple as valve guides leaking, but either way that head will need to come off. Good luck mate.
I was amazed by the syspension beause that was my thesis in 1999. The whole idea was to do what citroen did in Xanthia without the need of a pump. We also built a 1:2 model of a car with dumpers connected that way. Instead of electrical valves we used manually adjusted flow control valves. We have also connected the front with the back so when you break and the car tries to lean forward the whole system tried to keep the car fully parallel to the ground giving extra stubility by pushing the rear wheels to the ground, so you have more grip. It is nice that some ideas are not left in some piece of paper!
Now I know why it’s always foggy in the UK 😂 i am still celebrating your face when you got it that the used suspension parts were more expensive than the new ones from McLaren😂😂 I really love your team, your channel and especially this car. Keepin Fingers crossed that you make it until X-Mas.
Hi Mat, i recall that either Vtuned or Freddy also had a lot of smoke, the first time they started their Mclaren after a rebuilt. I can't imagine that the headgasket will be blown because of a crash, i'am also thinking towards the Turbo's. On Idle, the smoke is not too bad, when you rev, those turbo's push a lot of air and smoke through the system is my guess. Keep up the good work, i love your video's and how you guys keep on laughing!
I have never and will never own any vehicle like the ones Mat rebuilds. I’d say I’m jealous but I had a brain aneurysm almost 14 years ago and haven’t driven since. I still love watching these videos because Mat and Tony are amazing together and they make what seems impossible, possible for every day guys. I can’t imagine tackling a job like this and you guys just do it and figure it out as you go along. Well done and such a positive attitude. Now if we can just teach Mat to say Us and the likes hahaha. Sorry Mat, just kidding.
MATT My Twin Turbo 335i DID THIS AFTER SITTING FOR 8 Months and not running at all. I ran the car for about 20 minutes (OUTSIDE) and let all the oil and fuel and water work it's way out of the turbos and exhaust. It billowed HUGE AMOUNTS OF WHITE SMOKE for about 15 minutes then started to clear out and slowly but surely it became clean and clear!!! Just let the car run for a while and wait and see if it clears up. It could be just fuel and water etc in the system needing to burn off!!! THAT WAS THREE YEARS AGO and now I have a 600 HP car that runs perfectly! No engine rebuild nothing!! Just let her run off!!!
I love how your dad absolutely cracks up laughing when a serious issue occurs. It really does lighten the mood although prob not for yourself ! Your face had that definite ..’oh ffs no way’ look about it this time. Fingers crossed it’s just something on the lines of turbo oil seals or some other oil drain issue through a turbo. Even then the fix could be a pricey addition to an already eyewateringly expensive rebuild. This is turning into my favourite build series so far. Good luck Mat.
Mat - "That's rough that".. Chris - "it's going in though" 🤣 Love how you lads just like to get the job done, no tip-toeing around or being overly gentle.
vacuum fillers are great yes but you might consider also getting a coolant pressure tester as well. use it first to test the system under full pressure. this makes it way easier to find leaks before adding any fluid. great job so far. your dad is a great person to have in the shop to help and break up the tension
I absolutely enjoy every video you guys do!!! It feels like I am right along there with you. I enjoy the great attitude you all have and the ability to have fun no matter what. Even if it costs money. LOL
What I love about thus channel is its something any one could do. Not because it's easy but because it's just hardwork and being smart with budget. How he does these could be applied to any project, yeah we all can't buy a crash McLaren but it could be a small car or a cheap property. Get it for a good price and work pit what it needs and find those things at the best price. Learn some skills and work hard. It's a simple process yet so many think they can't do it. When I watch these videos I don't see a youtuber with money buying an expensive car, I just see a bloke working has ass off long hours fixing a broken car. I reckon he should do something else other than a car as a challenge haha.
Great content as always Matt. I think the breakers should reimburse you for the shocks as a kind gesture. Would go for as all can see that here or even give them a shout-out. I know it's not gonna happen.
35 years ago my first car was a 1.3 L Astra, I remember giving it large one night and it ended up smoking like that, it ended up being the head gasket. Best of luck with this one, refreshing to see someone so positive for a change!

Awesome video Mat! Not usually one to comment, but I've had a similar issue before, with a similar amount of smoke. Others have said Turbos here (which I think also could be a potential), I'd also check the PCV/CCV system as if they properly go, then they can throw that much oil into the intake system (at least it looks like maybe it's oil to me?)
Ive been watching the channel for some time and wondering what is the alcamy that keeps me coming back? I like cars but wouldnt call myself a petrol head. And the magic is that Matt, you're an extraordinary educator. You make the mundane interesting and the complicated simple. Also the editing is so professional. I suspect you could teach anything if you put your mind to it. Keep up the good work
Hiya Matt remember when you started the McLaren you had no water in system. If head Gasket has gone it wouldn’t run at temperature she would overheat. I think you must have a system on the engine that cools something down with water running through. So have you got a pipe wrong or is there a water inlet manifold or something not connected properly?? Remember your oil cooler was damaged and you replaced it water runs through that . How dose your thermostat housing work on the McLaren?? diagram on water system and water flow may help . Engine not bad in my opinion 🙏good look. And carry on with what you do best 👍
Matt. Check ur turbos could be leaking a bit of oil. Or check ur pcv/ccv system could be damaged and returning to much oil that’s being burnt in the system. I doubt this could be it but leave the car running and check coolant level if it goes down after a while if it running it’s probably cuz u have either a bad head gasket or a crack in the block. Really doubt full on the latter. Anywaves keep up the amazing content brother and don’t give up u got this. 😤😤

Bro i wish i could be you! The amount of videos i have watched you work on cars and deal with the wiring systems you make it look easy! I wish you made classes to learn how to do things on cars! Great videos like always!
Need to check if that’s coolant get a borescope and look at the inlet ports. When we was developing the engine heads would crack and we would get coolant dribbling into the cylinders from the back side of the inlet valve
Tony's cheeky laugh when things don't look good as soon as it turns over..... priceless 😂 That is the laugh of an experienced tradesman who knows the job will take just that little bit longer now. I reckon there's oil pumping into the cylinders somewhere, possibly through a turbo. What ever the problem is...the lads will get to the bottom of it. I hope Mat gets his money back on the defective parts. Stay calm and have a cup of tea 🙂
The engine crankcase is being presurised, the oil filler cap popped off. With a dry sump the crankcase is usually running with a small vacuum with a tiny ventilation hole/pipe. If the outputs of the turbo are dry it must be coming from within, hopefully not head gasket. I am sure with emissions control regulations the ventilation of the crankcase/heads is complex. Before stripping the engine, try checking all of the ventilation pipes and make sure the turbos are not presurising the crankcase due to a pipe connected to the wrong place or a ventilation valve connected backwards.
Drain the oil start with 6.5 qts. Perform check oil level sequence using the cluster in service settings. Oil temp must be at operating temperature. Add little by little after each check level sequence until level says ok. Most likely overfilled with oil even the oil level slightly over it will cause the smoke. Good luck!

You have a lot to catch up. Watch them all from the start in order!
Its crazy how he makes it simple to fix a car😂
This one doesn’t seem very simple
Because it is easy to fix a car as long you have parts
@@ruioliveira9845 No you need alot of knowledge
@@sykolol2681 nah u just need youtube and some simple knowlage of how that works and you'll be good
@@milanum1565 isn't it ironic that you're trying to lecture others while not being able to spell the word knowledge
Oil would have smoked a different color. This is definitely coolant
Love watching this come together. I'm guessing you've already checked it, but I remember VTuned's 720S smoking a lot and it turned out that it was just overfilled with oil.
I’m feeling ya Matty
Check the turbos aren’t Very Bad first.
Work it out before pulling the motor
Love your work brother
I'm sure you'll get the engine sorted, but please have proper ventilation in your unit to allow the exhaust gases to escape!
Congratulations Mat for how you approach your work.. thanks to you I am having the strength and courage to publish all my videos. Thank you so much ❤️
The work ethic of Matt and his crew is insane!
I really enjoy your videos because you don't always show when things go well. It's more realistic seeing all the process, not knowing if they going to make it through. Congrats. I'm sure you will find the way, you always do.
Super inspiring. Makes me want to use my garage like a proper garage 🙏
Genuinely my favourite channel on TH-cam at the moment. Highs and lows in every video. Laughs in every video. Even the sponsorship ads are actually incorporated into the video. Keep up the good work Mat, Mat’s dad and everyone else involved in this craziness.
Yh other people do the sponsored ads in a different frame not like whilst doing the video. Very clever of mat
Its definitely not oil that’s coolant its too dense to be oil
Both turbos would not fail at the same time. Smoke coming out of both banks - does it have a water heating loop in the intake manifold?
@@TheSharkLX unlikely for both heads to fail aswell its definitely a strange one
That smoke is too billowy and bright white to be anything but water. I’m afraid he’s gonna be pulling the engine and replacing head gaskets. 😢
You and your Dad still laugh and have so much fun even when the engine may be blown …..love the contagious laughter 👍🏻
To begin with there are two heads ! and valve guides leaking ? are you serieus ?
@@rudiknapen4867 No, but I might be serious. Plenty of smoke can come from the head (or heads) through the valve gear.
I honestly think it could be possible to get it done by Christmas, keep going mat 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for your honesty! Showing your mistakes and failures helps us to persevere in our projects even when we fail
I love how your dad turns a "engine very bad" incident into a hilarious laughing moment!! 🤣
Mat should try rebuilding airplanes now. These rebuilds are too simple for him.😂😂😂
maybe one of them starships that space-x is launching. they recently just crashed one.
@@Jrakula10😂
Maybe he should modify trucks 😂
@@SilvaMoks no one should mod trucks...
Fantastic Work there Mat, I am body shop trained since 1989 . I haven't see that level of commitment for many years, keep up the good work.
Your getting there matt🥹. Don’t worry at all your fans are praying and will never leave your side 🥹🙏 hope to see new video soon
I know Mat will figure it out! You got this! Best wishes for simple fixes!
Mat - "That's rough that".. Chris - "it's going in though" 🤣 Love how you lads just like to get the job done, no tip-toeing around or being overly gentle.
Love how normal you guys are, you really keep it real! Good luck guys.
It blows my mind how you rebuild these cars, especially this one!🤯👌🏻 Love Big Tony’s laugh when the smoke starts billowing out of the exhaust!😂
Check the turbos before taking the engine out. Could be oil or water leaking into them causing that.
First time?
Glad you didn't give up on the tub, great work Mat 👌
Feel you pain Matt. And love the banter with you and your Dad, Good times always
Way to go Mat and team on getting it this far! Looks like another engine to take out and fix, you got this! 💪
vacuum fillers are great yes but you might consider also getting a coolant pressure tester as well. use it first to test the system under full pressure. this makes it way easier to find leaks before adding any fluid. great job so far. your dad is a great person to have in the shop to help and break up the tension
If i remember correct the same happenend for Vtuned after his 720 rebuild, he simply overfilled the oil.
I’m guessing turbo problems with that kind of smoke
Love it how Mat’s dad always laughs when something serious happens 🤣 hey, if you don’t laugh you’ll cry.
I think if it wasn’t for his dad he would’ve by the look on his face
Mat the brilliant way you film and narrate reassembly is one reason why you have grown this mega channel.
Matts dad is a bloody legend 🙌 makes me laugh in every vid, “daylight robbery!! Pants down “😂😂😂
I absolutely enjoy every video you guys do!!!
Great to see the car making great progress! Mat is the coolest Person alive! ❤
Matt definitely just saved someone’s job when he bought all them parts from the 720s 🤣
If you’re having a bad day, you only have to watch one of these videos to know it’s not all that bad.
The attitude, positivity and enthusiasm are infectious.
I love Wednesdays, upload day 🎉😊
I’m from Leicester too you’re probably the best thing that’s ever come out of Leicester. I love your videos so much. Keep up the good work and have a wonderful Christmas
Love the content lads, I'd certainly recommend checking the turbos first - they'll have a centre water jacket with seals, common to perish.
You'll get it worked out Mat! We have faith in you. Keep up the amazing content my man.
Awesome video Mat! Not usually one to comment, but I've had a similar issue before, with a similar amount of smoke. Others have said Turbos here (which I think also could be a potential), I'd also check the PCV/CCV system as if they properly go, then they can throw that much oil into the intake system (at least it looks like maybe it's oil to me?)
you will get through this mat.
Love the fact the when things go wrong you and your dad laugh about it! It shows a humbleness and appreciation of the unique live you get to live. Never change! 👍
Here from Life of Palos . Always bragging about how AWESOME your content is and how fast your channel has grown. Been Subbed for like 6 months and you and your dad have been killing it. Much love and respect from little ole MAINE USA
Great work chaps, its coming on nicely. Refund needed on that bent shock, rip off breakers yard special.
Your Dad's laugh cracks me up, good or bad there is always a laugh, he is a legend matt, your lucky to have a dad like him mate
Good luck!
hay, thanks for your videos ....great job keep working while doing your selling your product... you kept my interest.. usually i leave the video. so good job
