    I love it, it turned out amazing, but you could add a thin wooden frame to the ground piece to cover the edge that doesn’t have tiles also to protect it from breaking or loosening.. bravo Ariel!

      I thought the same thing! Also because tile edges can be kind of sharp.

      Yes, shouldn’t be too hard to add a nice little trim! Lots of fireplace surrounds in the UK have them.

    It would be so cool if you really did this with more of the fireplaces in your house. You could also make the backsplash in the kitchen like this, so you can take it down and change things up

    Your method for removable tile is so smart. Too many times people end up covering stuff up that they have to access later on cause they don't think about that possibility. Also congratulations to your parents for finding affordable house during the housing shortage.

    This looks incredible! One thought - in the future if you wanted a more “built in” look to the floor piece I could see some quarter round stained to match your floor affixed to the wood under structure with some glue or small finish nails / brads (so nothing splits). The quarter round would smooth the transition between tile and floor so you’re also less likely to catch or stub your toe on the transition. (May not be an issue for you, but I stub my toe on everything so I’ve figured out hacks to smooth transitions around the places I’ve lived 😂)
    Looks great and I am so inspired by your colorful style and can do attitude!

    2:59 I'm so shocked that pie plate looked so beautiful!! I thought it was attached to the fireplace and just a decorative piece that was designed for the fireplace. I can't believe it's just a plate

    • @jarcha4200
      @jarcha4200 ปีที่แล้ว

      It isn’t a “pie plate” It’s actually called a flue cover plate/ stopper. It is made of galvanized metal. They are used to close off the entrance to a chimney flue when the chimney isn’t in use. Back when homes were built without radiant or central heating, ❤ of them had chimneys in their kitchen or other rooms, where they could install a small coal or wood fueled stove in the room/ attaching it after removing the flue cover to use during the winter. A house I lived in as a child, built in the very early 1900’s, had an exposed brick chimney in the kitchen with flue cover just like this. There was a corresponding flue cover in the upstairs of the house (same chimney) near the 3 bedrooms. They were for small coal/ wood stoves we found in the basement storage room. You can still buy these covers as people still use them.

    I think it looks beautiful but I would add a thin piece of moulding around the base that is the height of the tiles + plywood. Painting that moulding white and then filling the front edge with the top tips of the tiles or more grout will give it a more finished look and tie it to the mantle.

      Same. The baseplate looks unfinished with the cheap wood showing through

  • @bilbobaggins5752
    @bilbobaggins5752 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    In your next fireplace baseplate, if you use rectangular tiles, you could place the tiles on the board first then cut the board to match, so you don't have to cut as many tiles. Also, when I did grouting, it really hurt my hands, like the chemicals or something is harsh, so I needed to wear gloves after the first time.

  • @jenniferjones5025

    You need to cut tiles across the front of the hearth. Then add quarter round moulding, stained to match your floor, around the perimeter of the hearth to hide the raw edges.

    You might find peel and stick tiles easier to manage. For your purposes they would be ideal (low/no traffic areas). There also are peel and stick tin tiles which might work for you (design wise) and which would be appropriate for the age/style of your home.

This will help prolong the life of the motor because it isn't recirculating water that is gunked up with tile dust. Can't wait to see what you do next!

    Grand idea for these type mantles. The notion of the hearth-like base piece on the floor is just novel. Having both of these tiled areas to be made as custom cut & tiled removable plywood pieces is true genius! Countless people will now work on recreating your ideas about how to deal with these type mantles. Thank you for creating this magnificent DIY home renovation video. I'm impressed overtime! ...I now want to take some cut plywood sections & tile them to use in some specific locations to artistically accent these areas. Had you not done this video I never could've considered tilework as a decor option to create some beautiful spaces about my home. Thank you. I look forward to watching future & additional videos!

    this is so cool and looks really pretty - the only concern i had tho (as a clumsy person) is whether you've rounded out the corners of the bottom board? personally i'd defo stub my toes on that, no matter how small the ledge (but i can see a more spacially aware person not having this issue)

    I had a couple of those “pie plates”! I got em out of abandoned farm houses. Mine had paintings on them. They were to cover the heat vent holes in chimneys, most commonly on the second level of a house where there might not be an actual fire place but the chimney still went through the room. They were metal cause it still conducted the heat. I stopped collecting them after I went into a farm house and found a rather large snake living in the hole behind one 😂

    Beautiful fireplace - I love the colour and shape of the tiles! And the flexibility of the floor section.
    Just a thought but when I renovated an old fireplace it needed an air vent to prevent damp accumulating in the chimney flue area - this could be accomplished by drilling a few tiny holes through the grout/plywood where the "pie plate" was, and may prevent unpleasant problems with lack of ventilation in the future?
