    Perfect! I'll give it try before I resort to the sledge-o-matic.

    I'm only trying to remove and replace the shower drain due to a leak... I will try your idea of drilling the holes to remove the black gasket in the shower drain. I tried to pry this up with a screwdriver and utility knife with no luck. Thanks for the tip, will let you know if it works for me.

    Hi Billy. My house sits on a slab so I hope this works. I have wet carpet just outside the bathroom but only when the shower runs for a long time. My 91 year old mother lives with me and it takes her a long time to shower. Wish me luck. Jeanette. . PS One of my sons is named Billy so I'm taking that as a sign.

      +Jeanette Anderson Jeanette, thank you for your post. I recently had a service call for almost the same problem and the solution was caulking, not a drain problem. On a slab the drain will be in the concrete slab so for it to show up in the room would lead me to look other places first. I'm not saying it's not the drain but showers can be tricky to troubleshoot. Sometimes running the water in the shower and pointing the head at the walls will force the leak to show up faster and help you find it. Remember when you're taking a shower the water is bouncing off your body and going all over and not in a straight line the way it does when you turn a shower on with no one in it. Good luck with your leak!

    Thanks for the video. I did not ultimately have the rubber gasket, but realized that the space was filled with a plumbers compound after watching the video. Drilled some holes and chipped it out for a quick removal.

      I actually couldn't use your exact method because it turned out we had a lead shower pan with no rubber-type gasket in the drain, but the handy man helped me and we got it out in one piece. Thanks again!

    This was very helpful. You included the one piece of critical information that I didn't have. My shower was terrazzo base with iron pipe sealed with lead. But working from your tip, I was able to find that I could drill out and pick the lead and oakum freeing the drain pipe from the basin and then lift out the (very heavy) basin. No need to go to the basement to try and cut iron pipes! Thanks for the tip!

    • @burbbilly
      @burbbilly  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome Dennis. Should you need to cut the pipes(cast iron) you can rent a chain cutter for them, it breaks the pipe or you can cut them with a carbide blade in a sawzall. Once you cut a pipe use a rubber boot and convert it to pvc. Sounds like you have it all under control though. I'm glad the video helped you out.

    How would I just replace the center gasket because its leaking from mine. Would it be the same format?

    • @burbbilly
      @burbbilly  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you have to get the gasket out and then replace it with a new one. If it's this style it's pretty straigh forward. When you put the new one you can rub some liquid dish soap on it to lube it up if it's tight. If you have a different style shoot a picture or pictures to my email, link on my home page, and i'll try and help you

    Most shower pans are bedded in mortar

    • @burbbilly
      @burbbilly  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dr. Ralph Kennedy Mortar is used to keep the bottom of the pan from flexing when you stand in it, some have it, not all do and it doesnt change the way the pan is removed, usually the pan is floating free from the mortar and just pulls out. You then break up the old mortar and remove it to install new mortar to reset your new pan if required.

      I know this video and comment are pretty old but just wanted to thank you for this Billy. I'm in the process of removing the pan and see the mortar from the side. Was worried I'd need to sledge the whole pan out. Feeling more confident that I can get the pan out now. Thank you!
