My CD Recycling idea is very simple, but really very useful! Just one way to recycle, but at least three options to use - CD Soap-dish, CD Jewelry storage, CD Candle holder. All you have to do is hold your old CD or DVD above candle flame. Watch my video tutorial to understand what I mean exactly. Your CDs will melt and form a plate. This CD-plate can be used as a soap-dish, for example, or as a jewelry storage or candle holder - any way would be great. Soap will always be dry, because CD has a hole in center. As CDs and DVDs have beautiful rainbow-mirror cover your jewelry will look great in such plate. And the candle light will reflect sooo beautiful! So try my way to recycle old CDs and DVDs. Good luck!
If you're going to make instructional videos, and you're showing people how to make or do projects that produce toxic fumes, its your responsibility to make sure that people know that. You must ALWAYS mention and make visible in the video if you're wearing any protective gear, so your audience knows they need it. What you're doing in this video would cause incredibly toxic fumes being inhaled, possibly harming people for life.
ANYONE thinking of doing this project, or any other instructable that involves the melting of plastics, you MUST use good quality fume filtration mask (NOT one of those crappy little painting dust mask), and have either a fume extractor or be in a well ventilated space, ideally outdoors.You can get permanent brain damage and even die from inhaling chemical fumes. Alwasy Check first! Don't die kiddies ok?

I happened upon this looking into recycling cd/s as in a plant like plastic bottles.
Do you know the chemicals / metals that go into making a CD. I think you should find out about your material before you tell people to do this.
You do know its mostly/ a ton of kids on TH-cam, and you're probably telling KIDS to go burn a toxic CD/DVD without any masks, gloves and indoors?
So after you the toxic melt you make, you would put a soap in there, and put the soap on your skin.
Use common sense.
These are the "candy dish" we made 20 years ago in shop class, using a polyplastic, industrial heater, and molds in 8th grade.
My Goodness these are just so beautiful. My husband has 6 boxes of CD's in storage I would like to steal from him now lol

Well this is not earth friendly at all because burning cds produces Carbon monoxide which is a poisonous gas

Wow your video are fantastic!
I liked the video but this is way harder to do than shown. I've ruined many a cd/DVD trying to get the same effect as here and all I got was warped, deformed, cracked and all kinds of messed up discs but no crackle and no bubbling. I did everything from change candles to flames,i.e., torch,lighter,etc. and I even changed house close, how far, how high and how low I place the discs and in every event I got the same outcome, warped disc with broken seals. No crackle and no bubbling.
What am I doing wrong?
How about the fumes? Would it be better to do this outside or well ventilated area?

ok mine didnt bend and got badly smoke damaged and was a complete failure...how do you do it without the smoke damaging the plastic

Ad Hoc - Thank you for warning us.
You can do the same as a lot of these with a heat gun instead of with a naked flame which won't release nearly as much toxic fumes.
I just tried with a heat gun...still releases a very potent smell, I stopped without finishing...it's to over bearing without being outside.

Was one side of the CD that deep red color from the beginning?
The soap dish has a hole in it negating the whole reason for putting soap on a dish.
dorothydanridge: soap dishes have holes here in India. It helps the soap dish remain non watery.
So you would rather your soap sit IN water? Then you don't need this.
Can you make a paper flower and a Christmas balls?
Put some folders ontop of it. And your burning files to a cd

Thanks for video but something doesn't work with CD....better DVD. I suggest to remove before, the film on the side with the inscription, it's a better result on both side. The fumes are discuting...so open windows and wear the musk. At least a pretty idea.
I tried this but there was soot burned into the plastic. How do you avoid this?
