It is a 30 day trial. Change the time of the VMware virtual BIOS beyond 30 days and it will expire. Maintain the BIOS time/date within the 30 day window and it'll remain activated.
XP mode activates using OEM SLP activation (similar to a Dell XP Pro Reinstallation CD on a Dell PC). For this the generic Dell OEM SLP key is used and the Dell PC has a SLIC 1.0-2.1. XP Mode has its own SLP and SLIC.
XP mode has an official activation mechanism on VMware. Add the line xpmode.enabled="True" to the VMware configuration file and it will activate. This adds the SLIC 1.0 required to the VM virtual BIOS, the SLP is included in the XP Mode install. Unfortunately adding this line to the VMware configuration file only works on a Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate or Enterprise Host.
Also since the install is OEM, it will only accept OEM keys and not retail keys. OEM keys are non-transferable and you cannot activate by phone at least using only the automated line.

I agree 100%. The title made me think there was some sort of mode in Windows10 that would bring back all the user-friendly features and compatibility of XP, while keeping all the new security features and applications of 10. Virtual machines are slow and incompatible with USB and sound cards; 2 things absolutely necessary for all the applications that I use on XP. Click bait, and I fell for it!

    • @GiuseppeGaetanoSabatelli

The point is that it's an official Microsoft release, and depending on the wording of the EULA, using it for the explicit use of running applications on newer versions of Windows, this may be legitimately a 100% legal use of this copy of Widows XP. lol
Also, it's actually less setup. It's an official "Final" image from Microsoft. 100% patched, no network, installation, or updates required.

A boot option (/PAE switch in Boot.ini) is needed for 2000/XP. Windows XP SP2+ doesn't allow the OS to access more than 4 GB (even with PAE enabled) because it was found to cause issues with 3rd-party drivers. I really don't get why Microsoft never released an XP mode for Windows 10/11. Windows XP was the last OS that was able to run all the old legacy software from Windows 3.11 onward so would have made sense to include it within Windows 10/11 just as they did for Windows 7.
Anyway, I just use VMWare now to install Windows XP than can run all the old software through that but still I would have preferred an XP Mode for Windows 10/11 instead of needing to mess around.

As for the external CD-ROM pass through I think it is essential as most XP era games use one for installation and copy protection. Sadly most modern cases don’t even give you an external drive bay anymore so you have to use a USB connected one.

One extremely important thing I must do is physically disconnect all my other internal hard drives that are in my computer (there are 4 of them). The reason for this is because Windows 10 and Windows XP index the drives in a different matter. Failure to physically disconnect all my internal drives will result in corrputed hard drives that will no longer function under Windows 10. OUCH!

I know it's an old video. I have a client I am upgrading to Windows 10 and they use currently Windows 7 Pro with XP mode with a really old DOS program. So my question is, can i open the old existing XP Mode drive image in VM Ware Workstation or virtualbox?

Does this work with the current version of VMWare (16.0 for Windows)? I followed the directions, and when I turn on the VM Workstation, it gives me a black screen that says Operating System not found. How is it meant to find the operating system, since we chose to install the operating system later, but then we never installed it? I do have the VirtualXP.VHD file in the same directory as my Windows XP Professional Virtual machine.

For anyone else with the same question, this is what I did. Boot the Virtual Machine, click player -> manage -> Hard Disk -> Disk File. I noted the file name it is looking for = Windows XP Professional.vmdk I then deleted this file, and renamed VirtualXP.VHD to Windows XP Professional.vmdk and it appears to be working.

Hi. I understand that his post is old but I am unable to get into XP Mode. I followed all of your instructions but keep getting "Operating System Not Found" error. I tried searching for a fix for this but have had no luck. Do I actually need an installation disk for Windows XP? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a student edition windows xp X64 bit and I load everything onto the pc using usb and disc.
windows xp is not a safe operating system to connect to the internet with unless you have some hardware proxy...
steam doesn't support windows xp without downloading some random archive version which I regret using, nothing bad happened it just wasn't worth the risk if there is any.

? Would KVM be able to use the .VHD to boot WinXp ?
? Do competing hypervisiors allow easier access to Lan, Gpu, ... ?
I use Corel Draw and my ancient version which works well under Win7 and Xp refuses to work under Win10 even in compatability mode....arghh.
? Will using this mode will it allow XP to run in tandem with Win10 (i.e. clip sharing between Os)?

I think I've been clickbaited... From the title, I thought you're going to mod Windows 10 to look like XP.
That said, I've actually learnt something new here: Disassembling a Win XP installation executable and turning one of the components into a fully functioning pre-installed virtual disc of the OS is a pretty nifty trick. Never would have thought of that. Great video! :)

    • @FlyboyHelosim

It's common knowledge that Windows XP Mode is a legacy compatibility tool and not a theme. If it was a theme, it would be called a 'theme', not a 'mode'. Also, this method of using a pre-made virtual hard drive has been going for years. There's some websites online where instead of downloading a ripped disc image of an operating system, you can download the virtual hard drive that's had the OS pre-installed on it. That way, it can be easier to setup for some people depending on where you are in the process of creating a virtual machine and also you're potentially bypassing the breaking any licensing agreements as you're not providing bought software in its OEM or retail state.
