Great Western Trail: A Solo Perspective on One of My Favorite Games! 🏜️

- Hey there! Thank you for checking out a somewhat unique kind of video for the channel! After twelve solo plays, Great Western Trail is still the game I most look forward to playing and in fact, after filming the B-roll for this video this morning, I reset the whole thing so I'm ready for another solo attempt today! 🤣 I fell in love with Great Western Trail way back in 2019 when I was just getting into the hobby but I didn't buy myself a copy for the longest time because I heard that the second edition was going to come with a solo mode and I'm so glad that I waited! It's a solo game that keeps me coming back over and over again and I think if you like mid- to heavy-weight euros or rondel games or deck builders or even just a good Western-themed game you'll have a very similar experience!

Update: Just played my 13th solo game of Great Western Trail and my seventh against the Medium difficulty! I was convinced the game had ended in a tie (92-92) but I realized I had forgotten to count one of my station master tiles so I actually won by three points! What a nail biter! ☺ That makes it three wins, four losses against Sam at the Medium Difficulty! Think I'm ready for Hard Mode? 🤠

Daaaaaave. I really need to play GWT..... I have never played it once, and its always been on my radar since become a board game geek. Hehehe! And I play mostly solo.....
It's such a great game both solo or otherwise! Definitely worth looking into getting even just for solo play in my opinion! 🏜 It is on Board Game Arena if you'd like to play together sometime! 👍

My husband’s favourite board game, and it’s definitely in my top five! I played this a few times solo but I kept losing lol. I think I realised I didn’t have the rules properly figure out at first. Looking forward to playing this one again, I love how many strategies you can take in this game and how you can add action spaces to the board. Also loving the cinematic shots, Dave. 👌🏻
Great Western Trail is David's favorite game? That's awesome! 🤠 I'm looking at my most recent ranking from June '23 and apparently GWT was #6 on my list but I think right now it would be in my top five, too! ☺️ So cool that you've also played this game solo! I'm sorry you kept losing, though-do you remember if you were playing on Easy mode? You'll have to bust it out again sometime and give it another try! (I'm assuming you didn't sell it since it's David's favorite game?) 😨 And I didn't really think about the whole adding action spaces to the board thing but that's literally one of my favorite mechanisms in board games... although I like it even better if other people can stop on your space to get the same benefit but you also get a bonus when they do! (Like Caylus or Lords of Waterdeep!) ☺️ Thank you so much for the comment and for appreciating the new stuff I'm trying lately! I'd like my videos to keep getting better and better... there are so many amazing board game content creators out there doing such amazing work with their videos! ☺️
@@BoardGameDave we did sell it 🫣 It was a Christmas gift from him too so I was pretty gutted. We have so much we are bringing over to the States though, including 3 guitars lol. But it’s first on the list to re-buy 🙂 - I think I was playing on easy, yes. I may have made the mistake of Sam stopping on my action spaces and doing my actions come to think of it. Keen to try again thought💪🏻 - and I will check out Caylus and Lords of waterdeep - cheers for suggesting!
You SOLD Great Western Trail?? David's favorite game?! 😭 I totally get it, though-with how much you must be bringing from Australia to the U.S. it probably makes way more sense to sell stuff there and re-buy what you need once you're settled here! ☺️ And my goodness, that would certainly make Sam a much harder AI opponent! I hope you're able to give the solo game another chance as soon as you get yourself another copy of GWT! 🤠 By the way, both Caylus and Lords of Waterdeep are quite dated at this point (think 12+ years old) but they did re-design Caylus as Caylus 1303 and it's a more streamlined, asymmetric, and (in my opinion) better game! Definitely worth looking into! ☺️

Ive tried to table this one solo but something about the set up keeps on making me return the box to the shelf :(
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that! 😰 There is a decent amount of setup to be fair but it's really not too bad once you know what you're doing! A few objective and cow cards to set up, some hazards and outlaws, some station master tiles, and then you're good to go! Hope you get a chance to give it a try sometime! 🏜️

@@stormburns Oh, gotcha! Yes, the sequels seem to have a lot more moving parts to them so I don’t blame you! I haven’t played either of them but I can’t say from experience but my guess is that it’ll be worth the involved setup! ☺️
