Well, I'm not sure how accurate the other simulators were. But my dad, an irl American truck driver, says that American Trucking Simulator is very accurate to driving over-the-road. Truck Driving is not as complicated as Mark made it seem.

21:11 Google Maps gives you the option to fix North up, and I always use it as such because like Mark, it helps me keep my directional orientation.

@@teslacoil5378 I think it's just in our nature, just as we judge others on how they look and behave. We gauge their level of threat or usefulness on a base instinct level.
From that point on though, it's our choice to correct that judgement or throw it out completely, like you would with a beginner. :)

3 yrs later and this is still one of my favorite videos. The fluctuations of "I've got this shit" to "fuck, how do I truck?" make this some of the best Mark comedy for me.
Trying to get back into traffic when you accidentally get in the exit lane is just like that. This game looks like a really good simulator honestly, not sure about them brakes though. 90% of your technical difficulties are the exact same things I heard all the time at truck driving school.

I'm going to argue on the compass settings. Fixed point and directional compass headings serve different purposes. Fixed point, as in north is up, is for finding out where you are better, and relating that to the things around you in a set way. Directional, or Orientation, is meant for when you are trying to get somewhere. Most physical compasses even include a second needle to set your orientation.
PLEASE DO MORE TRUCK SIMULATOR, it brightens my day to see someone struggle parking ;)

Hey Mark...
If you ever decide to try this game again, I recommend you try playing with a toy truck, holding it just by the cab; that's a legitimate method of picturing what you're doing that they tell you in trucking school.
As a tip from a former driver, definitely slow down on every exit (you're exactly who the recommended speed is for), swing wide and take up as much room as you need to make the turn properly and don't be afraid of other drivers... and when you're backing up, turn towards the problem, aim your trailer, and then turn the wheel straight or the opposite direction, depending on whether you need it to continue in that direction or if you need it to straighten out.
I hope you give this game another shot--even if it's just in your personal time!
As a flatbed driver everything mark said about cali driving couldn't be more true, from him saying, "idc about truck specific speed limits im going 70" to "do trucks have to be in the right lane? My experience is there wherever they want" had me dying everytime he talked
pro tip for anyone backing up with a trailer: put your hand on the bottom of your steering wheel, if you turn it left, the trailer will go left, turn it right, the trailer will go right. :D have fun hauling whatever you may be hauling!

As a food delivery driver I have to use GPS most of the day to find where I'm going, and my family and girlfriend criticize me SO MUCH for my stance that a gps should ALWAYS be left in the north up orientation. Thank you for validating a core belief of mine that no one else in my life will ever agree with. I knew there was some reason I keep coming back to your videos.

I operate heavy equipment and all I can say is it seems like those trucks are like steering a front loader but worse and I can't imagine doing that on the highway fuck that, I'll stick to pulling trailers and moving dirt in my quarry lmao
