    You should paint the netting black so its easier to see into the coop. Others did it and the result is amazing. Maybe include that in the second video. You have great videos keep them flowing.

      i've used black PVC coated hardware cloth in the past to have a cleaner look. As someone mentioned below, it is recommended to bury the hardware cloth that reaches the group at a 45 going out to discourage digging. Predators will start digging near the walls and will continue going deep unless they are hindered by the hardware cloth.

    In softer soils I've always been told to have the wire from the bottom buried pointing outwards at a 45° angle to deter predators from digging under the walls. The angle apparently throws them off and discourages them from continuing to dig down. I build walls for a rabbit run using 14-gauge 1-inch mesh rather than hardware cloth because foxes can be extremely determined.

    Great video! I was a little nervous watching you cut with that junky miter saw set up! Three passes to cut a 2x4 is crazy! I know you love craftsman bits there are better saws but at lest upgrade to a 12” or at minimum buy a really good blade and it will cut like butter! There’s a lot of good videos on saw recommendations!

  • @brucealvarez9263
    @brucealvarez9263 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nice build. I'm glad you realized your error using poultry wire when you need a "Fort Knox" coop. For anyone reading, get the 1/2" hardware cloth. No predator can fit through that and it is a larger wire size than the 1/4" one might be tempted to use. Also, people need to know that the kind of staples you used are fine, Arrow staple gun style are NOT, they are easy to pull out. And a note: You do NOT want to close off all the ventilation in the winter. The birds need airflow to get the ammonia from their poop out of their living space. They will be fine as long as there is no draft on them while they sleep on the roosts.

    Another option instead of hardware cloth would be fence panels. My area farm supply has panels with 1x1 squares 4 feet wide. Only down side they only come in 16 foot lengths. They are also much heavier gauge than hardware cloth. I know a guy who built his rn with used chain link fence on framing. Reason, it was free.

      I love chicken too but these will not be eaten. They become pets and are for the eggs. Thanks for watching.

      LOL - It was a joke - I didn't think you built the 'Chicken-Mahal' as a branch of KFC.😀 @@AprilWilkerson

    Chicken wire doesn’t offer any protection from predators. A raccoon could wipe out your flock overnight.

      Okay, I didn’t mean to presume, I had read somewhere a while ago that you and your husband split and thus you moved to your new house.
      Been watching your channel on TH-cam for years, I think pretty much since you started it. I remember one episode where you said that were successful enough to quit your job and just work on your TH-cam channel.
      You always have great content, hope you have many more years of success! 😊

    It’s adorable, but chicken wire is so easily broke into by animals. Your first one was hardware wire, but chicken coop wire is a misnomer, it doesn’t protect chickens. Honestly. You should consider using hardware wire, and pain black, makes it invisible so easier to see in and out. Hah just heard that you figured that out. How much did this coats, lumber is still very expensive.

    Has anyone built this yet and have a rough cost of materials? We are looking to get into chickens and its been tough figuring out costs for coops without buying plans

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cost of materials are subjective as some use some lumber they already have plus also where you buy it, and how how large you make the coop. Some build in stages as they can afford. It's just not a one answer for all. Thanks for watching.

    Chickenwire is NOT predator proof. Always always always use hardware cloth!

      @AprilWilkerson  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I mention that in the video and that I would replace it with hardware cloth. Thanks for watching.
