    Steps for How to Build a Chicken Coop:
    1. Stain the sheets of T1-11 and allow to dry.
    2. Place two sheets of T1-11 on top of each other and ensure they are even on all sides. Use a track saw to cut the roofline of the plywood at a 45-degree angle on both sheets at once.
    3. Remove one sheet and then, using a jigsaw, cut a small square opening for the sliding coop door into a plywood sheet. For all the doors, the cutouts will later be reattached as the door.
    4. On the next sheet, cut an opening for the small entrance door, using the jigsaw.
    5. Cut a third sheet of T1-11 to form the side walls. On one of them, cut a large opening for the egg door, using a jigsaw. The other side wall will remain uncut.
    6. Cut two of the 4x4 posts to the desired length, then match the angle of the roof using a miter saw for both steps.
    7. Use a driver to drive in 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws to attach the posts to the plywood sheeting.
    8. Use a piece of 2x4 at the bottom and the top of the coop to give it additional support. Attach these using ceramic screws, and fasten them using a driver.
    9. Construct the opposite gable end, repeating the same steps.
    10. Connect the two gable ends using 2x4s, and attach one of the side walls.
    11. To form the rafters, screw in a 2x4 ridge beam and 2x4 purlins (parallel roof framing), using a driver and 3-inch ceramic screws.
    12. Finish the framing by attaching additional 2x4s to the base of the front and back gable walls, using 3-inch ceramic screws.
    13. Then, attach two more perpendicular 2x4 joists to form the floor support for the coop with 3-inch ceramic screws
    14. To form the floor, use the _-inch exterior plywood and cut out the corners to match the posts using a jigsaw.
    15. Fasten the plywood floor by driving 1 5/8-inch screws into the floor joists.
    16. Attach the cutout door pieces to the plywood exterior sheets of the structure using hardware of your choice. Do this by driving provided screws into the hardware.
    17. Attach the chicken door by threading a rope through a pulley at the top of the door. Then attach the rope to an eyelet on the chicken door. The other end of the rope should be linked to a hook at the opposite end. A track for the door can be made using scrap wood.
    18. Attach the final side wall using 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws.
    19. Build a nesting box to your desired dimensions using plywood and 2x4s.
    20. Cut cellular PVC trim boards to match the angles of the coop, using a miter saw.
    21. Attach the PVC trim boards to the exterior of the coop using a hammer and stainless-steel trim nails.
    22. Attach _-inch plywood roof sheathing to the roof structure using a driver and 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws.
    23. Lay down a layer of felt paper, and staple in place.
    24. Using a hammer and roofing nails, attach the asphalt shingles with a 5-inch reveal to the roof sheathing.
    25. Attach 4x4 posts of the coop to a beveled base using a driver and ceramic screws.
    26. Attach the beveled base to a 2x12 square using a driver and ceramic screws to keep the coop from sinking into the ground.
    27. Create a pen area using pressure-treated 2x4s to desired design. Connect the pen structure using driver and ceramic screws. Include an access door for cleaning the pen.
    28. Cover the pen with chicken wire by hammering in construction staples.
    29. Dig a trench in the outline of the pen at least 3 inches deep, and place the structure in the trench. This is meant to keep predators from crawling in underneath.
    30. Attach the pen structure to the coop structure by driving in screws.
    31. Place a piece of 2x12 from the coop door to the pen to serve as a ramp for the chickens.

    Why do chicken coops have 2 doors? Cause if they had 4 doors they'd be a chicken sedan.🤣😂

    Tell me you never had chickens, without telling me you never had chickens. I seriously love This Old House. This is a quality built coop. Just not the best for chickens. If you are watching this video please take the following into consideration. Chicken wire is nothing to ground based predators. Coons and or possums will sinmply rip their way through it and kill your birds. Ventilation is key. Chickens run about 105 body temp. They lose water through breathing. If cooped up without ventilation the air becomes heavy with moisture which can cause them to get way to cold. Finally, and the chicken people will know, you only need one or two nesting boxes. Give them 10 and they will fight over one.
    I know it's 8 years later, just a nice gentle warning to anyone considering this exact build. It's cool, just add heavy duty hardware cloth to the run, put in some vents and only do like 2 nesting boxes.

    Too often these days, in project like this, the master worker starts right in without even giving a drawing or plan of the project. He's done it many times before, I'm sure. However, it helps so much to visualize the usage of pieces if we have an initial graphic idea of the whole thing.
    I love watching experts work, though, this was educational.

    A few thoughts for people who are thinking about recreating this. "Chicken wire" is not fox or raccoon proof. They can bite right through it. You need at least 2mm thick aviary mesh / welded mesh to be predator proof. Secondly chickens need a place to roost - they sleep standing on a roost which is essentially a bar. This house has no bed! Also this is far too many nesting boxes. Chickens like to share nesting boxes so two or 3 would be fine.
    Lastly, that coop is too small for six chickens. Especially with the additional nesting boxes.

      Yup I learned the hard way about that chicken wire. Fox or possum ripped it and had a all you can eat buffet of young chicks I had. I then replaced it with hard wire and added shock wire to the outside of the coop. Later that night I could hear the zapping and squealing of whatever it was learning a lesson. So guess you could say we both learned our lessons. I also have 8 chickens with 3 laying boxes and they only use 2.

    Lovely, though you could take it a few steps further. Coops have a tendency to have all the temperature variation of an 18th century barn, which can mean they're uncomfortably hot during the summer and cold during the winter. This can be dealt with by insulating the coop's walls and ceiling, adding weather stripping to openings, and thinking about placement in order to get winter sun but summer shade. I figure the chickens are giving me fresh, ethical eggs to enjoy every morning, so they deserve a few creature comforts.

    • @Maxid1

    • @giuseppe5080

      I agree with ventilation Windows but don't think chickens need their coop insulated since they kind of have there own insulation feathers (down) formed every winter. People don't give as much credit towards chickens hardiness as should be.

    • @AztecWarrior69_69
      @AztecWarrior69_69 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You might be over EGGaggerating a bit. I live in South Texas and I have made many chicken coops for personal use and for others. As for the heat all you need is vents up top. As to the cold it does get very cold here due to the sea breeze. Gets below freezing at times. Have not gotten a single report of the chickens dying or even getting stressed. In fact our chickens lay year round. If you know chickens at all you know that they will not lay eggs if it gets too hot or too cold. Why? Because they can't regulate the temperature of the eggs so they don't bother. Sooo.

    • @ryanault5130

    This is a clever/cheap build from a carpenter's/homeowner's viewpoint, but my compliments would stop there for a Connecticut-climate coop apparently designed for AT LEAST 6 adult chickens. Others here have mentioned some of this coop's flaws, here are my suggestion: If you insist on this design's 16 sq. ft. floor plan, put in only 3 nesting boxes a couple feet off the floor, thus leaving the full 16' of floor area. Chickens hate being crowded; they get stressed. Get only 2 or 3 chickens. Put in a dedicated roosting bar/pole; this design does not include even that basic amenity. Put in a south-facing window to allow for some winter light/heat on cold, bad-weather days when your birds will be stuck inside this tiny box for days on end. Insulate at least the floor. Run electricity to the coop to power a watering-can heating element in mid-winter, and/or a heat lamp, and/or low-wattage light bulb/timer to extend the "daytime" in mid-winter. Hope for a lot of good weather.I lucked out, buying a property with an old horse loafing shed which I converted to a 80 sq. ft., passive-solar chicken coop. Imagining my hens in this video's tiny, dark, cold, roostless box makes me shudder.....

    • @DimaProk
      @DimaProk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is chicken coop, not a pen, why would they spend the whole day in there? did you watch the video all the way to the end where they build a pen? Also they probably did all the extras later for me it was important to see how they build it so I can build something like this. 6 nesting boxes was overkill, we have four chickens and they all use one box they refuse to use the second one.

    • @timhansen4556
      @timhansen4556 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      why would they spend the whole day in there? Because of bad weather. Maybe you live where there is never sub-zero cold, or 3-day snowstorms, or 3 continuous days of rain....bit I do, so my birds have more room, a rroosting bar, and a window for light.

    • @flowergirl3438

      Tim I agree. Too many nesting boxes for such a small coop, and I wouldn't trust cheap chicken wire for the outside pen. They should have used something predator proof. Those chickens are going to be freezing in the winter and stressed out in a small shoebox and when they are outside, they will not be as safe as they should be.

    Chicken wire is only good for keeping the chickens in. Galvanized hardware cloth is a better solution for keeping predators out. There are different sizes, 1/2 to 1/4 inch are good. Digging the wire in the ground is a good idea. My friend lost 95% of his flock when raccoons tore through his chicken wire.

Then on front there is a 4x4 door that opens and a 1x2 door for chickens to come in. On back another 4x4 door this makes it easy to clean out. It has 4x4 post for legs and the frame was built with 4x4 post. Lol it was built heavy.

    That roof ought to have a overhang. T11 will delaminate over time with water running down sides.
    Also 6 hens don't each need a box. 2 or maybe 3 is good for 6 girls.
    And really 3 inch diameter pole allows for ideal roost. If all they have is those boxes to roost on they will get broody.

    A chicken should have atleast 2 sq ft inside the coop and 4 sq ft outside the coop. For a 4x4 chicken coop you could only house at most 8 chickens. 1 nest box for every 3-5 chickens is recommended. I believe you over did it a little with 6 nesting boxes and maybe used up a little bit too much space. You also could have made some ventilation Windows for the summer heat.

  • @manlyadvice1789
    @manlyadvice1789 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This coop seems to have been designed for humans (aesthetics, ease of building, and ease of use) more than for chickens.
    Nest boxes are typically placed above eye level for the chickens (because bored chickens will sometimes peck eggs to pieces) and you have too many for a coop that size. If you plan to only ever have six chickens, I can't imagine you would need more than three nesting boxes. You need a roost in the coop where the chickens will sleep. You need to use heavier wire to keep predators out. You need that wire to go down or out at least a foot, maybe more, to stop predators from digging.
    What's strange to me is the fact that you know about most of the concerns people usually have in building a coop, but you didn't look up how most people typically build a coop and run. The construction is fine (except the chicken wire). It's just a bad coop.

    Love it, my only worry would be that the chicken wire is not strong enough to keep predators out..I think I'll use 19ga Galvanized Hardware Cloth, it is much stronger. I would also dig down and bury some of the 19ga Galvanized Hardware Cloth to stop predators from digging under the fence in the run area, and I would fence in under the coop so that they have some shelter from sun and rain. But the video and the coop design are great.

    I'd put in a wire floor bc the chickens need more ventilation. they will develop respitory infections with out proper ventalation. and I wouldn't use chicken wire on the sides bc it's to thin and Predators push right through it. other then that its a great design.

    Chicken wire is designed to keep chickens in - not predators out. Use hardware cloth for better security, unless you live in a predator-free area.

    As someone who raised chickens there is a lot wrong with this coop, and a lot overdone unnecessarily.
    1. Chickens need good ventilation, without it they get infections easy.
    2. for 2 or 3 chickens this might be large enough, but if that's the case you only need one or two nesting boxes, not 6.
    3. the outdoor pen does not need to be that tall. Chickens are no more than 2 feet tall... think of building a house with 60 foot ceilings... unnecessary and a waste of material.
    4. Everyone builds a ramp, but it's not needed, even if you clip the birds wings they can still fly small distances. The only time it's needed is when they are young chicks.
    Tip: build a place for the birds to roost in the coop, a simple 1 inch dowel will work.

      @twitchingdan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruce Wayne Can't answer bout the other stuff, but a ramp is more of a design thing for most people.

    • @GhostKills
      @GhostKills 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Bruce Wayne Actually, the reason why the outdoor pen is that tall is because
      It's for people who wants to get inside and if it's too small how would they get inside the pen?

    • @Hypatia4242
      @Hypatia4242 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      People build the outdoor pen tall enough for a person to comfortably stand in because, as seen in this video, many children and owners want to go in and visit with the animals. Many people now see them as pets, not just working birds. Most of these stylistic choices were done for the humans involved, not chicken use.

    • @spacecowboy2k
      @spacecowboy2k 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      chickens do not roost like wild birds, they need 2-4" to keep their feel flat for roosting. Made the same mistake on our coop. A 1" dowel is not a good idea, especially if you get below freezing in wintertime, as it can promote frostbite if they can't get their feet completely under their warm bodies.

    The best way to stop predators digging under the fence is to bury the side wire about a foot out from the fence in a reverse "L" so that when they dig they hit the wire, they may try a few time but you will notice they always dig close to the fence so keep hitting the wire.

    This is the exact size coop I had for my 6 hens. Their coop has some serious issues though. Where is the roost?! A sleeping chicken is a pooping chicken. They need a beam to roost on at night so they don't sleep in the nest boxes. For 6 hens, 2 nesting boxes was plenty; theirs was overkill. Lastly, they need hardware cloth over the chicken wire to keep predators out.

    Nice coop. Too many nesting boxes. Typically one box per 3 hens, which even that tends to be too much. Right now I have 2 boxes for 10 hens and they still only lay in 1. Also, no place to roost? Roost should be highest point, and it looks like it would be pushing it in that coop with the height of the nesting box.
    Overall, not too shabby. Nice looking hen house.

  • @janea5898

    Using a scrap of linoleum or tin on the floor of the house makes clean up easier. Tin also works on the roof instead of asphalt shingles which can make the coop too hot, with a comer piece of pvc trim for a ridge cap. Also on the tops of all of the walls you need ventilation holes drilled and reinforced w/screen and the clean out door should be constructed as a double door with an inset of screen and a door that closes for winter. ...always use a double layer of hardware cloth for small predators and wire screen for flies. Lastly a 12 inch apron extending out all around the yard sub grade a few inches deep to deter predators from digging under. Now that I think of it ...You only need 3 laying boxes for 6 chickens so you could eliminate the side clean out door entirely and instead hang 3 boxes and clean out from under - using a Dutch door set up with the screen only in the Lower door. Mostly - never use chicken wire. It will not deter large animals. Ask your hardware store what they recommend. Hardware cloth or other heavy wire screen material.
    Awesome basic design though. I was looking for a simple design to build for a second coop. Thanks!

    Hmmm... not so sure about the wood surfaces with ground contact. I assume it’s PT but after several CT winters it will start to rot. Also an extended eves and gables would have been better in inclement weather. A sliding tray in the cleaning area would have been more efficient for service.
