THANK YOU for sharing this story! I've never heard of Reverend Perry, but I'm so grateful there were brave men like him (and Father Richardson!) before us to help pave the way for current LGBTQ+ people. Being born in the early 1970s, we made gay jokes as kids without really knowing what gay meant. I had no idea my male best friend was gay until he came out to me when we were young adults. He was raised Southern Baptist and contemplated suicide many times as a teen because he couldn't understand why God would make him this way. Even now it hurts my heart to know he went through all that alone. As a young adult, he found a gay church that helped him find peace with God.
it breaks my heart when families are so close minded that they think finding out who their family is attracted to - changes their family person. they are still the same person you have loved all the years.
That is very heart breaking & sad on so many levels. No matter what you are or how you choose to live YOUR LIFE, noone deserves to be burned to death, horrific!
Thank you for telling this story. It needs to be told, especially now. I have been following you on Monsters since you started and never miss a broadcast. This is an extremely well put together show. Thanks again.
Monsters has always been a staple to my TH-cam watching, one of my favourites. I was then so excited when I saw you were starting Somewhere Sinister. It has not disappointed in any way, shape or form, from the first episode. Keep doing what you do best, you’re awesome 💜
I know you're doing the deep South and I want to point out that due to the passing of time and new, horrible people doing horrible things (plus all the garbage people pay attention to that takes up their time), a surprising number of people aren't aware of the Tuskegee syphilis study. This is something that never should be forgotten and you reach a younger audience who may not be aware of this horrific bs. Just a thought.
You're absolutely right! This would be an excellent subject to address! I'd like to see something about it done especially by this channel. Might find out more I didn't know. I hope yall consider it.
Might want to cover the mass sterilization of indigenous women without their consent and cover the trail of tears and the highway of tears where many indigenous peoples and women and children perished. Also look it to the canary boys suicides on reservation. People seem to want to ignore the people who rightfully own the lands these crimes are committed on.
@@tonguepetals I sure wish they would! This will definitely be an excellent topic to cover for both the younger and older generations. I'm 66 and don't know much about these happenings if anything at all!
I read this book. It's called "TENDERBOX: The Untold Story of the Upstairs Lounge Fire" by Robert W. Fieseler. It's sad how no one cared about these people at the time. It's even more sad that some of the victim's families never claimed their bodies after having discovered they had died in a gay bar. There is a plaque that I've made sure to visit, but I was unable to find the graves of the victims who were never claimed.
Thank you so much for covering this story Jiles, I had never even heard of the UpStairs Lounge until today, and it means a lot to me to learn more history of the queer community that doesn't often get discussed.

I now consider myself an atheist but I'm so thankful for everything I was taught by the wonderful people I met there, I was finally given a voice and a sense of my own power and beauty.
I've never understood all the hate people carry around inside themselves. Although I personally believe it's self loathing for most, they all seem to direct their cruelty at others. Especially at those who are already kept down. As far as religion, especially Christianity, I carry mostly contempt for it. If America ever falls, it won't be defeated by a army. I absolutely love this show, even more than “This Is Monsters” which is saying a lot because I binged everything I missed. This show is a brilliant narrative that focuses on stories that are lesser known but not less impactful. I admire your storytelling, thank you for sharing it with us.
Somehow, the worst part of this is the heartbreaking (lack of) response from officials and the even more heartbreaking response from everyone else. The jokes. The churches. All of it.
My 1st time watching this channel. I'm a mega Monsters fan( note Mega not MagNa lol) I subscribed immediately! Awesome channel! I hesitate to use adjectives such as enjoyed, or loved, was entertained when watching true crime as there is most often victim(s) suffer terrible and tragic deaths, however I believe it's so important to give the voiceless a voice! P.S. as a Christian It sickens me that still today people who call themselves Christians still make homophobic statements. You were in MHO 100% correct about Jesus he accepts everyone and anyone anyone who Accepts him! Any prejudice is wrong. We as a society have come far but still have far to go! Hate=ignorance! Again great job covering this tragedy! Education is the 1st step towards understanding & hopefully acceptance!
I am grateful for something longer than the shorts. I enjoy these immensely and this storyline kept me glued. Once again, thank you 😊 P.S Your not going to believe this but I have a copy of Playgirl that first edition with Burt Reynolds as the centerfold. It was a big deal..believe me!! In 1973 I'm not aware of Pride being celebrated in New Orleans. In fact a 50 cent 🍺 mug alone was 2 gallons of gas. A pack of cigarettes 🚬 was 50 cents too. I'm in southeast Houston, 60 miles from Louisiana and 6 hours from NOLA. The bar itself would have been subject to harassment. Here in Houston, you had patrols on Montrose St., a still high gay community but many still were beaten and killed. Today, seeing this last month would have been great. Peace to all and keep fighting the fight. #LGBTQ
This is honestly one of the saddest tragedies. I was raised in a church, and something I was taught was “hate the sin, love the sinner” and while I no longer go to church, I live by the ethos “love everyone, wether you agree or disagree with them”. I’m glad my mother is a very accepting person because for over 2 decades my brother hid the fact he was gay from my family. Luckily he is happy now, and I love him. My mother does too, she’s said that she may not agree with his lifestyle, but she loves him, and sees him no lower than anyone else.
How Heartbreaking, and Heartless!! My heart hurts for them! Devastating!!💔💔💔💔🙏🙏🙏🙏 I hope the Survivors were able to Recover! I'm so glad times have changed!
I really like this channel and monsters. Being from the south I like this series as well. These stories are very well told and a good variety of backgrounds. Thank you for the work that you do bringing light to these horrible stories that deserve being told.
I always feel so shitty about what happened at what’s now known as the jemani. I have to make deliveries here for work. I refuse to go upstairs. It is extremely hot upstairs like the heater is on. No matter if you bring one box or 20 up those stairs, by the time you reach the top you’re sweating bullets but the weirdest part is you’re sweating but you get chills.
SOMEWHERE SINISTER, please consider doing “The Spenard Motel” in Anchorage. It’s sort of Alaska’s version of the Cecil Hotel on skid row in Los Angeles. My daughter worked there. She saw murders, found dead bodies, saved people from overdoses, etc. lots of good material for an upload! (I hope you can!)
Today, the Episcopal church welcomes all. It makes me sad to hear the words of the bishop at that time, but encouraged to see the courage and conviction of the local pastor at the same time.
I know that there is always still work to do, but I’m so glad that the attitudes experienced by the victims on that day, would now not be tolerated by the majority. I’m not a religious person but those words asking, would Jesus turn these people away, is a question I wish that more religious people would ask themselves - really ask themselves. Hint: the answer is No, no he would not. That’s one thing I do remember from Sunday School - John 15:12 that you love one another as I have loved you - pretty simple commandment I think. If you’re into all that stuff. (I had to look that one up lol) Thanks for making and sharing this video. 🙂🐿❤️🌈
I watched a show and I’m not sure if this is the one I’m thinking of, but was the pastors body stuck in the window caught on a photograph? I might be confused with another tragedy… Also, this was just terribly heartbreaking 💔
I LOVE that you made this a full episode! The people that were lost due to this fire deserve a thorough look into what had happened to them, and like always you did a fantastic job at doing just that! Thanks again like always for a wonderful job!! I love both of your channels! I don't even have to tell you to keep up the great work since you are always going above and beyond what most channels would never be able to do!!!
Night clubs used to be so much fun! In the 90s! We had a club called the moon and it was always regulars! Seeing the same faces was a true comfort of sorts! Back when dancing was a huge part of our Lives and culture. I see the tiktok vids where ppl say they are dancing… but they are stiff and hardly are moving. Looks like ppl being forced to dance and are miserable to do so…. Makes me kinda sad tbh
It's amazing how vicious people were in the 70's, until you realize they haven't changed at all. It's just a different group of people that society finds it acceptable to alienate
Yup, now instead of gay people it's Trans people. What I find so sad is the prevalence of Trans (and bi) phobia in the gay community. Not only would you think they'd know better having suffered outrageous persecution themselves but the person who threw the first rock at the Stonewall Inn was a Trans woman by the name of Marsha P Johnson. She was phenomenal and worth looking into if you haven't heard of her.
@@larry-naylor sorry, that’s actually historically incorrect. So Marsha was actually a homosexual drag Queen (her last interview can be found on TH-cam, she discusses this at length), she wasn’t there at the start of the riots and no bricks were actually thrown, I’m not sure where this misconception started but it was actually punches and shot glasses that were thrown! The first punch that started the riot was thrown by black lesbian Storme DeLaverie who was being attacked by police and saw drag queens getting arrested, she shouted “why won’t someone do something”, her punch started a fight which led to the riot, she was afraid of getting r@ped by cops who often r@ped lesbians. With regards to Marsha, she went by she/her yes, but that’s part of gay culture, so in regards to her being at the riots it was after it started: “I didn’t get downtown until about two o’clock”, and in regards to identity: “I would tell them I was a boy and I was in drag... and when I get up in the hotel and I take off all my clothes they’d say “I can’t believe it, you’re a boy”... I’m just a transvestite.” I know Marsha is important to folk as a historical figure and I don’t wanna be rude, history is important to me and I’m bisexual myself (the “mother of pride” was a bisexual woman!), but Marsha’s actual history is completely ignored, she did so much work when she was alive with STAR and was sadly murdered, and her history is being wiped and ignored. Yes, the community has a LOT of issues right now, trans people just wanna live their lives where folk think debating their existence is accepted, bisexuals are still dealing with the same old biphobia, we’re both shat on constantly by our own community, it’s incredibly difficult just navigating our own community honestly. Both B and T just wanna live as normal people, but can’t for some reason, and I wish there was a way to fix this but honestly I’m not sure there is. In any case, I apologise, but Marsha herself was a proud drag Queen who didn’t arrive until after the riots, there’s a 55 minute interview with her on TH-cam which is a wonderful watch tho, I’d highly recommend it!! Edit - it’s called “Pay It No Mind”
We have to have some group to designate as inferior. Until we figure out how to value ourselves objectively that will be the case. It's never good enough to be a great person. We have to be better than someone else.
Human beings are capable of inflicting the most pain upon each other in the name of thinking they're right. I have never liked labels, but if i had to use one, I am a bi woman who wound up marrying a man. We raised our kids to just love. My two girls are pan while my son is straight, but they all fight for rights for everyone, no matter how hard it is. Empathy is everything in this life. We have to keep doing better so stuff like this never happens again.

and in regards to identity: “I would tell them I was a boy and I was in drag... and when I get up in the hotel and I take off all my clothes they’d say “I can’t believe it, you’re a boy”... I’m just a transvestite.”
I know Marsha is important to folk as a historical figure and I don’t wanna be rude, history is important to me and I’m bisexual myself (the “mother of pride” was a bisexual woman!), but Marsha’s actual history is completely ignored, she did so much work when she was alive with STAR and was sadly murdered, and her history is being wiped and ignored.
@@ZombieSazza Thank you, you're absolutely right. I remember reading somewhere that she was a Trans woman, thank you for letting me know.
Yes indeed!! And lets not forget Stephen Paddock, Las Vegas mass shooting who killed *60 people in 2017.*
We have to have some group to designate as inferior. Until we figure out how to value ourselves objectively that will be the case. It's never good enough to be a great person. We have to be better than someone else.
Thank you for your message at the end of the video!
This one’s my favorite so far
I hope you continue to do this program in your spare time. I quite enjoy it.
Thank you.
I appreciate YOU 🙏🏼 💛 another amazing piece of history said beautifully. 👏
Thanks for covering this.
I went to the Stonewall bar a few years ago.
All the beer you can drink for a dollar sounds so outlandish that i cant imagine that even being legal today
Best one yet!!!! Thank you for your thorough coverage and words of wisdom!! Spot on!!!
Thanks for the upload ☺️
More videos here please 💜👑💜
So very sad...
Thank you for your excellent content.
This is so heartbreaking💔🕊......Thanks Jiles 🙏🏽
Great video....enjoy anything concerning this area.
Wow, listening to the way the fire was dealt with in the aftermath is nothing short of infuriating. People can be disgustingly cruel.
You make my workday go so much better with both of your shows.
Thank you for telling ALL OF THE STORIES!
Your voice sounds like they guy from This is Monsters!
It’s the same guy lol 😆

Wow! This took place before my time. I had no clue that any of this had happened. Thank you for opening my eyes.
Your final comments were incredibly moving, Mr. Morgan. Thank you for covering this case I had never heard of. Will be sharing it w/my community.
Hey I just watched the new monsters episode but it reminded me there hasn't been a something sinister in a month I NEED MY SOMETHING SINISTER LOL!!😂 I know it's a lot of work to do 2 channels just wondering when the next one is. I LOVE BOTH channel's but I think this one has become my fav now.
The Excellence of your work. Impeccable ❤️💜
Yeah I really like how informative you are about history. Love it. Thank you!
This was so well done!
You have got to be one of the best, most convincing, and most eloquent teller of true crime accounts in the WORLD. Your content never fails to amaze me.
AMEN Father Bill!
I love your channels so much, the variety of stories told and they way you tell them, outstanding! Your voice, selection of words and style of expression is just brilliant! Thank you!
Great job as always. Black Wall Street aka Tuscaloosa would be a great one for the south! Those people deserved so much better in this video. It’s a shame people can’t act like decent humans simply because people don’t love who they do. Great coverage. This channel and this is monsters are one of the best on TH-cam! Thank you so much
Thanks for this story Jiles. I hadn't heard of this disaster. You're killing it lately with these stories! I thought you were busy moving. Best regards! We love you!
Love the series, worry about what that says about me...Thanks for the upload!
I have watched and enjoyed every episode you’ve put out! I applaud your concise detailing of these crimes and mysteries!
