  • In the video "Polymer gel Electrolyte for batteries" I show to you how to mahe a polymer gel electrolyte based on KOH which can you use in batteries or some supercapacitors (solid state battery).
    MAKE IT:
    You need:
    - 300 ml of water
    - 10 g of KOH (Potassium hydroxide)
    - 20g of PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol)
    Into 300 ml of water you add 10g of KOH and 20g of PVA when you mix on magnetic mixer and heat the solution on around 90 degg C for some time.
    When all the PVA particles are dissolved you are ready to add the solution in some container to leave that the solution is solid.
    Full video will be on Patreon!

    PVA closslinks with citric acid when exposed to alkali- heat PVA a citric together- they stay liquid, but thick . Paint it on a felt cloth, then dip it in a solution of NaOh to harden.

    Adding fumed silica helps the ionic condictivity by allowing micro-channels of ionic liquid to be "trapped" in the polymer-gel. Very good for Ni-Fe battery chemistries

      Thank you. Yes, indeed you can mix it with hand on some hotplate. But can take some time that the PVA will dissolve 😴 You need to have around 90 deg C that the PVA will dissolve,.... a hotplate will be ok. Also if is to much for you to mix it with the hand,.... you can also stir with a drill ➡️ which is connected with some T or L shape profile for mixing. No need for grind KOH, because will dissolve relatively fast.

      Good question. In basic yes, but you need to play with the amount of NiSO4. I try several SO4 materiels and is hard to find good salt amount that you will add to PVA. Because when I add to much salt I end up with stone hard material, but if I add less salt I get flexible electrolyte but the ionic conductivity was bad.

    Hi can I add iodine to replace the sodium hydroxide? Since I’m making DSSC textile, I need solid electrolyte

    • @cayrex
      @cayrex  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, iodine does not actually “dissolve” in water (1 gram in 3450ml h2o at 20 deg C or 1 gram in 1280 ml at 50 deg C), rather, iodine reacts with water to make hypoiodous acid (HIO) and hydroiodic acid (HI). But yes, you can add additives or you can replace the hydroxide. But with other materials is possible that you will end up with less flexible or fragile separator. I dont know what you will get if you will replace hydroxide with iodine but it's worth a try. What about salts that have iodine like KI (potassium iodide), they will be good soluble?

    Sir, can we make polymer electrolyte with sulfuric acid?

    • @GreenCaulerpa
      @GreenCaulerpa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Boulos Nassar It probably won‘t work in the first line because you probably will be unable to get chain growth in acid medium because in this case the hydrolysis is the reason for chain growth.

    • @GreenCaulerpa
      @GreenCaulerpa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But in fact you could use the demonstrated method, wash it in di-water several times and then soak it in a sulfuric acid solution with a concentration of less than 60% v/v because else the sukfuric acid directly reacts with pva under temperate conditions and form a pink-ish product

      @boulosnassar9214 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks

    • @GreenCaulerpa
      @GreenCaulerpa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Boulos Nassar and if you like to know I could give you a hint which is as following:
      I suggest you to use PVA with a lower degree of hydrolysis (60-80%) because the left-over acetate functional group will give you upon addition of NaOH/KOH a polycondensation which is like crosslinking, this way your membrane won‘t dissolve. Regular white glue will do the job, just mix it with an hydroxide salt in the right concentration and you will be litterally able to form a hydrogel, so you can follow up by soaking it in acid.
