Aluminium Air Battery - Corrosion inhibitor

  • "The application of Al and Al alloy anodes in Al-air batteries requires the electrodes to have minimal passivation so that dissolution can occur with ease. However, this depassivation leads to the spontaneous degradation of aluminum. In addition, the self-corrosion reaction of aluminum with release of hydrogen causes fuel loss in alkaline media. Thus, adding inhibitors to the electrolytes becomes one of the most effective methods to relieve these problems. The primary inhibition mechanism of corrosion inhibitors is utilizing the adsorption of inhibitor molecules on the aluminum surface to effectively lower the corrosion reaction."
    I found this idea interesting about Corrosion inhibitor additive for extending the life of aluminium air battery. The electrolyte additive will slow down the corrosion of the aluminium.

    Love your videos, i am very interested in Al-ion batteries specifically (secondary type mostly) :) An Al - Air battery made of 95% Al to 5% GaInSn alloy would be VERY interesting to see, especially with the Zinc oxide corrosion inhibitor. Would be a short-lived battery, but very powerful! Since the AlO layer would no longer be passivating the whole conductive surface. If the AlGaInSn alloy was powdered and pressed into a sheet with a conductive additive - the GaInSn will prevent the surface from oxidising and creating a protective layer - instead the entirety of the Al electrode would oxidse regardless of the surface oxidation. A chain-oxidation reaction.

      When you connect the load to the cell,... first will dissolve the zinc and then aluminium. So for that reason is both.

    Interesting chemistry here but I am a little confused on what is happening. If the zinc oxide is being deposited on the anode as zinc metal, you don't have an aluminium anode any more. You now have a zinc anode and a zinc air battery. If the aluminium is covered with zinc how can the aluminum be actively be involved in the chemistry of the cell? Maybe the zinc coating is not solid but just porous enough to allow electrolyte to reach the aluminum underneath?

      It was found that adding saturated ZnO to KOH electrolytes provides the most protective Zn film with good adherence and high density, which can lower the Al corrosion rate by 2 orders of magnitude. The electrolyte will still go to aluminium like you said. Maybe I ad to much ZnO and thats way make a strong spontaneous deposition of Zn.

    Nice Video - if the life of the aluminum air battery with KOH is a couple of cycle, less then 1 hour, then what have you found when ZnO2 added …… is it 2X, 5X, 10X longer life????

    • @cayrex
      @cayrex  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I make this video I try ZnO for the first time, so is to early to say. But note to the paper: "It was found that adding saturated ZnO to KOH electrolytes provides the most protective Zn film with good adherence and high density, which can lower the Al corrosion rate by 2 orders of magnitude. Moreover, configurations with a capacity near the Al theoretical capacity were achieved."

    What about using aluminium Powder on a Stainless steel pickup electrode instead of the Alufoil ? Would probably drastically increase the current output...if the Alu powder would be used up then, will the Zinc powder then again be oxidized to ZNO ?
