    I think it was the "tiny bit of CGI" that did the trick. I don't mean the CGI, I mean the "tiny bit of . . . ". I feel that CGI works best when it is used sparingly to cover cracks, hide imperfections, and present additional depth to an already well shot scene. When the scene is CGI, where all else was not, you start to notice the edges of the projection/TV screen.

    • @knightghost1782

      @@knightghost1782 When I found out that TDK was nominated for best VFX at the Oscars, I literally thought "How's that possible? There were no VFX." Which goes to show how clever Nolan and his team is. TDK only has about 600-700 VFX shots while other films might have 1500-2000 VFX shots. It's not the number that's important, it's how you use it.

They're a staple in the practical fx filming industry, they've also worked on movies like Fury Road (the script was actually rewritten when it was found out what they could do) and specifically the incredible chase scene in dark knight. Blows my mind when you said the rooftop scenes were filmed with miniatures. Nolan is known for not relying on CGI a lot and I know he is capable of putting a real Tumbler destroying the top of a building, but I would have never thought about miniatures because it looks so real! It's seamless.
    The Tumbler might not be the most visually thrilling model, but it works within the Universe of this Batman, and the chase scene is the most bad ass thing ever.

      @BTroit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Adding on: this was more his tryout to get more freedom from WB (specifically for Inception). WB didn't value the batman movies that much before this series, since Batman & Robin and Catwoman both did poorly in the box office and were really poorly reviewed. Insomnia and Memento both did well compared to their budget and were well reviewed, so they gave him a shot to prove he could handle a big budget movie before they gave him a blank cheque for some of his more ambitious projects.

      No, no, no...
      That scene wasn't terrible, but it was a good idea horribly executed.
      Why intro with the mechanic telling him he put 300hp in the car? Impalas of that year already have 300hp.
      Why the scene with him ducking the car and shutting off the lights? The police spotlights were already pointed down the road at the time, meaning the patrols already saw his headlights; it would be super suspicious to see headlights quickly shut off at that point.
      And the scene when the chopper spots them? The engine sound is clearly from a car with a manual transmission, even though that one is an automatic. (and it's not an Impala sound; I would know, I owned one) And, even though he grips the wheels, they don't even overtake the other cars on the bridge, meaning they aren't even accelerating.
      Lastly, I'm almost certain that stadium parking on a big game night wouldn't have the attendant booth unmaned and the gates up. Barreling in there would attract all kinds of attention, even with a mob of fans.
      Again, good idea, flawed execution.
      Check out the intro chase from "The Driver" (1978) as Refn almost certainly took inspiration from it.

    • @resurrectionist1
      @resurrectionist1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@insoporous9978 Maybe it's my lack of car knowledge talking here but...
      - The intro with Shannon (the mechanic) I read the scene as he fit the car with an EXTRA 300hp meaning that it'd be faster than the standard Chevy Impala.
      - To the point about ducking and shutting the lights, rewatching the scene, his headlights didn't stretch beyond the mouth of the road he was driving so technically the patrol car wouldn't have seen his headlights. Since the searchlight they were using was a lot stronger than the average headlights of a car, the Driver could see it first.
      - The bit with the chopper I can't argue with on a realistic level. I'm not a gear-head and I know the difference between manual and automatic. The only thing I'll say is that it was a storytelling license. To really sell that the car was driving at a higher speed and to ramp up the emotional weight of the events, the filmmakers probably decided to add the sounds of a manual transmission, replicating the bit from "The Driver" which Refn has admitted he was inspired by.
      - With the booth and gate, there are two possible reasons. One is that the Driver is so well planned, which is established with the opening shot, that he paid the attendant to not be there and leave the gate up, or two, that since the game was winding down, no one would expect a car to come INTO the building and we don't actually see him barrel past the booth (it cuts just before) so it COULD be implied he stopped and paid the fare too.
      But the short answer that I can give to all this is...suspension of disbelief. The reason this is such a well-executed scene is because of the masterful storytelling and if you can allow yourself to get swept up in it, these minor lapses, in reality, won't really mean much.

    This video helped me appreciate the chase scene more. Having said that, there were aspects of the chase I found lacking. Like when the cat drives over the roofs of apartments, instead falling through the roof, which would've obviously happened. Also, Batman's trying to avoid the police, finds himself behind them without their realizing it, yet inexplicably passes them all.

    Awesome Moment in The Dark Knight Trilogy.
    I can say one of the Most Spectacular Moment in Batman Begins.
    All the Preparation to Make this Moment so Epic results in a Creative Preparation process. Awesome in All Defines what makes a Movie Saga Spectacular and defines Batman as a Hero.

      I was never a fan because it didn't look real, especially the puff of smoke from the nitrous oxide cylinder thing that catapulted it upside down. But massive props for them doing it in a real street instead of a soundstage.

    My only question about that scene is why Batman had to keep switching seating positions. The first time he does so it's to fire the missiles to blow a hole in the parking garage wall. But then he does it again for no reason. I can only assume it was done for continuity...

    I believe that the Batmobile should be an extension of Batman; it's not just a tool in his arsenal, it reflects who he is. It needs to be as fast as he is, as tough as he is, as intimidating as he is, and ready for any situation that a city like Gotham can throw at him. And I thought the Tumbler did that very well; it drove on rooftops, it took out cars without casualties, it vanished into the dark.

    It wasn't one vehicle though. They built five (iirc) for different applications: one for actual driving in the chase sequence (that's the only one that can actually drive (again, iirc), the others are more like props), one for interior shots (the interior of the real tumbler looks more like a real tank than this fancy fighter jet/ spacecraft cockpit we see in the movie), and the rest were for jumping and other tricks.
