I've owned 4 jeeps, a 2006 TJ Unlimited Wrangler (my favorite of them all), a 2007 JK Wrangler, a 2010 Grand Cherokee and a 2018 Cherokee. NEVER once had a problem with reliability. Will continue to buy. Best factory off roading vehicles on the planet. Glad to see the new JL's & JT's have gone back to the older TJ gearing, 3.73's. Gearing in the JK's (4.10's) were great on the highway at speed, but lacked the torque and pickup from dead stop.

It had a longer body with twice as much cargo room in the rear, and was referred to unofficially as an LJ by Jeep owners. The L stood for Long body. This is truly an impressive build, however, these builds keep getting more and more unattainable. Technically impressive but completely out of line for anyone who doesn't have sponsorship or 100k to drop on a truck.
I was drawn to this channel years ago by the fact that you were taking attainable used trucks and turning them into a vehicle that could get out explore the world. While the trucks were critical for the adventure they played a secondary role to the adventure and experiences being had. Somewhere along the line the focus seems to have shifted. Which is unfortunate because the real draw for overlanding is the adventure and the people you meet along the way.
With that said, I still respect and enjoy the content being made at Expedition Overland; I just wish there was an offshoot program that focused on what the average person could do. Because the reality is, is that a well sorted 3rd gen 4runner or 1st gen Tacoma could get to all of the same places, have the same adventure, but for a fraction of the cost. And after all your channel is about getting people out and exploring life, what better way that showing them what is actually attainable.

      @n4656bravo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@noelskilz42Thank you! I recently finished reconditioning a 96' 4runner for overlanding. So that is right up my alley! I have to say, it is definitely possible to make older vehicles just as reliable as a new truck. I've put 35k on my 4runner since I finished. 14 national parks, a dozen mountain passes in the San Juan mountains and 2000mi of unsupported off road miles.

This! I used to watch the channel quite often but very rarely tune in now days. The focus has shifted very much towards hyping up vehicle builds, product placement, and more curated content. But I don't blame them for this. They've worked hard and this is just the world we live in when trucks have names and Instagram profiles and many are motivated towards getting into this hobby so that they can turn their rig into an "internet diva" and become an influencer.

@@BRBTechTalk In Canada a Tacoma is actually cheaper than a Gladiator, just test drove a Gladiator sport (fairly naked option wise) today and it's priced at 65k before rebates (FCA are always on rebate lol) versus a Wrangler Rubicon with a couple of options for 62k.
Tacoma in the next lot over was 58 iirc but I didnt take note of the options.
Them trucks are getting stupid expensive for serious offroading.

    • @-John-Doe-
      @-John-Doe- 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SoCal_rnr it’s a shame.
Jeep has become a meme and that lazy brand name will never compete with Toyota, unless whoever is the next failing company to buy them magically becomes the greatest vehicle manufacturer on the planet.
If Jeep wants to be taken seriously they can stop dressing up FIAT 500s.
Do you know why Toyota is known for reliability? They literally started by making Jeeps for the US military in Korea, and later called it the land cruiser.
Jeep has become a footnote in history and at least there will always be hipsters playing with that old design.
At least Toyota continues to make real machines that are used in warzones across the globe, from the UN to ISIS.

I've always wanted to build an overlander with a Wrangler. Gladiator looks like an even better system to build it on. Finally have things set up (house, daily driver car, a job lol) so I'm looking into building this thing finally. I just wish people priced out these kind of builds even if they're sponsored so I had a ball park guess lol. I'm assuming around 100-150k but honestly doesn't sound that bad since at one point I considered using a trimotor Cyber truck since they could possibly have 500+ mile range with around 15 additional miles a day via solar from the factory. Gladiator is definitely more versatile though so looks like I might scrap the preorder and let my wife trade in our 3 for an S or X while I build my own little dream earth roamer!

Would love this to sée this one. Not much have the awareness. Wrangler's cost way too much. Mahindra Roxor is available as low as $16000 , i bought 2019 one and lifted it with a 3inch lift kit. Love the look of it 😍, im trying to make it road legal , will be over soon . They make very good tractors.
The engine's got 62hp and 144nm torque but i have seen a video on TH-cam that it can do about 200hp with 400nm torque with the same engine. They have to detune the engine to meet the regulations. Its amazing. I'm planning on doing it on mine too, after putting enough miles on it.
I would recommend every one to buy them, it costs not more than a mortarcycle or an ATV and you can look cool 😎. It's bear bones you can modify it as you like.
Fiat is sueing them only for the grill and some body parts . As the case proceeds eventually Mahindra is going to win it as of now.
Mahindra offers more jeep than Fiat fake ones.
They are the only company to open a new plant in Detroit for over 23 years and they are planning to expand their designing hub to Detroit. They are providing jobs for Americans.I fell for it

Totally agree. Now Jeep needs to throw in that diesel engine and we'd have a reasonable equivalent to the double cabin 79 series and perhaps a manual transmission too. With the Landrover Defender no longer an option on the market, the Jeep wins (home turf advantage) since the Landcruiser 79 is not allowed Stateside.

The Heritage and design lives on in Toyota, the Brand name lives on in FIAT.
The brand name Jeep is a meme, so much so that you can slap it on a FIAT 500 and it will sell. You might as well start slapping _”Jeep”_ on purses and beard oil while selling a dead design at best.
Toyota got started making Jeeps for the US military in Korea, and later had to call their Jeeps _’Landcruisers’_ - although they’re still denoted as “J’s” _(FJ/BJ/HJ/etc)_
There’s a reason Toyota started off making Jeeps, and their vehicles are still favored in warzones across the planet, by everyone from the UN to ISIS.

XO being one of the most successful overlanding companies they get rid of the Amazing super capable JT with canopy and tray (PCOR) after a couple of season and few episodes. XO fleet being always a Toyota 4wds, it's clear they won't keep Odin for long (though it is name after a late friend of XO's). They're a Toyota guy they always have been, so they sold it to a gentleman in Minnesota(Odinchronicles) two years ago.

you are guys building very cool trucks, lots money put into. But my question to you its still more like solo or couples only and even dog a stretch. Why is not taking further what is more family needed, not a trailer, not a van, like a HD truck with 6 + bed and make something that will have 4 - seats, and dog fits into bed. when you can pass this edge, you might have something batter than Van, that can be use everyday driving and plus get out for the adventure. It's not going rock crawling, but not many people will go MOAB and try kill all family, and not all can do that, it's dangerous, really stressing vehicle to edge, and not so many parents wanted risk.

Just buy a landcruiser. Toyota got started making Jeeps for the US in Korea, and later had to call them Landcruisers for obvious reasons.
Landcruisers are still denoted as _”J’s”_ for an intentionally ambiguous reason _(FJ BJ HJ etc)._
There’s a reason Toyota still maintains those principles and that reputation, and why their vehicles are selected by everyone from the UN to ISIS in warzones across the globe.
The heritage, engineering, and design went to Toyota, the brand name went to FIAT.
You can either go with a J/Landcruiser, or a FIAT 500 with Jeep slapped on it.

They seemed to overland full time with very expensive vehicles. Is their job to build very expensive overland vehicles and go overland in them? Do they even have normal jobs to fund these activities/hobbies? Where do they get the financing to support these activities? Are they just filthy rich?

I know a bunch of people who would think this is "over the top" and an unattainable build for your everyday guy. But I think it's awesome - I grew up hiking, camping, hunting and fishing in MT. We all used army surplus gear or hiked in jeans and tennis shoes. Not because we wanted to, but because we had to. It definitely works - if you've got no choice but to use poor gear and still get out and explore, I'll take the exploring with bad gear. Up to a point, at least. But I remember the first time I was able to buy true hiking pants. And hiking boots. And a white gas stove. Premium gear is AWESOME if you can swing it. Also, I've been in situations where having the right gear in the backcountry can literally be the difference between life and death. I know a lot of these mods are for fun or comfort, but these guys have proven that they are plenty hardcore when the situation calls for it. Even if it's not something I'll probably ever be able to build, I like seeing them really try to maximize the platform - someone's got to push it to it's limits, right?

I really like the Jeep, and have thoroughly enjoyed the previous adventures. Yet, I wonder whether you are now seeking solutions to problems that doesn't exist; where is the enthusiasm?
