Your video promoted me to try the various colour profiles on my GH5M2 as I'd always used 'natural' because that's what other TH-camrs recommended. Cinelike D requires just a bit more work in post (not that much if someone has some experience in colour grading) but in my opinion it handles exposure and contrast much better, especially in tricky light situations.

Good point, I think it really depends on what work you are doing and how much time you want to spend in post color grading. For the talking head parts where I’m comparing the two profiles I was using the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 (I used this lens about 95% of the time I would say) and for the part of the kids on the bikes I was using the helios 44m-4 on a speedbooster. Great video, I was wondering how would I match the Natural profile to CineLike- D, since the camera I have doesn't have the CineLike-D profile. Thanks.
Good question! I think Natural is around 10 useable stops if I recall correctly. I don't know about Cine-V, but I do know that Cine-D is around 10.5 so I'm guessing it will be around there. I don't really pay much attention to the numbers when it comes to dynamic range because it's usually fairly close when not using the LOG profiles. I will say from experience that I do find the hightlights to be extreme at times with the natural profile so I recommend nailing exposure as best as you can in camera. I hope this helps and Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video. But I do not understand what you mean by Grades - Basic Grade vs skin tone grade. What editing software are you using? Are you referring to a LUT for a particular editing program? Are you filming in 4K or 1080 for this video? It looks sharper than my videos with the GH5 using Natural and 1080 with 8bit color. I would love some help with getting the sharpest videos with 1080 render for TH-cam.
What I mean by basic grade is just adjusting the exposure and saturation a little to get a basic look so the image isn't so flat. For the Skin tone grade I'm just using the Hue vs Hue curve to adjust or pull my skin tones closer to the flesh line on the vectorscope. I use Final Cut Pro X for editing, but the Hue vs Hue curve and other tools (like waveforms and vectorscopes) for color correcting/grading are found in most Editing Software. I don't really use LUTs that often either in post since you have asked as I really don't need to with my workflow. I also shoot, edit and upload all in 4K. If you don't want to shoot in 4k I still recommend editing in a 4k Timeline with your 1080p footage and uploading a 4k file to youtube. With having a 4k file it forces youtube to use a higher bitrate when playing which makes for a better quality image on the platform. I hope this all helps and thanks for watching!

Leeming lut fixe cine d with a click of a button and dont touch the contrast on cine D it’s already a flat profile when you drop contrast losses sharpness and introduced weird artifacts and hues. Cin d give more cinematic look. But youtube natural is quick easy and simple.
Yeah thats the thing, it depends on your style and your content. If I was working on something more bigger than just TH-cam content then I might stick with Cinelike D, but like you mention, for youtube Natural just makes the process much easier. Thanks for watching!
Not too much of a difference I would say. You will always be better off and would be less likely to run into color grading problems (banding etc) when shooting in 10 bit though. There was a mixture of 10 bit and 8 bit in both profiles throughout this video here. Thanks for watching!
I have found that portrait renders colors nicely as well! I always love seeing what other folks are doing with the GH5! Even though it is being thrown under the bus in a major way right now by most reviewers out there I still think this camera is incredible! I shoot at 1080p at 200M most of the time with what I do.
I believe I have tried Portrait once before as well, maybe I will have to revisit it sometime soon! I agree! This camera is still really great for almost being 4 years old. I'm excited to see what Panasonic comes out with in the near future, but I'm not sure how much improvement it will take for me to jump ship. Thanks for watching!
For sure. This camera was ahead of it's time and I think it really pushed other companies to include features like 10 bit in their newer cameras. A win-win for us consumers!
cine d is really nice but it does not have the texture that natural has. I have done a lot of test and natural highlights look bad but don't get destroy as much as cined, and on faces, I have a correction to fix the color issue but sometimes for things like youtube, natural just makes sense.
Interesting. Yeah, I have liked using Cinelike D for a long time. I just notice more and more recently with having a better knowledge of color grading that I'm running into more work with the skintones. Natural just makes it simple and it helps with creating stuff here like you mentioned. Honestly if I was shooting something that didn't have people in it then I would maybe still use Cinelike D, but I think I will just keep it simple and stick with natural moving forward. Thanks for watching!
I might be forced to use Natural profile since I have both the G85 and the GX85. The latter doesn't have Cinelike D. There's a hack but I don't know if I want to do that.
I agree. I like how it handles the Skintones and blacks much better. I think I will continue using it moving forward. Thanks for your input and for watching!
Great question! The reason I have always done it is because I want the most accurate reading from the sensor as possible. With shooting in 4k we have so much detail as is and you don't want the camera to over do it with sharpness. If we leave the sharpness up, the camera is going to jack up the image with Artificial sharpness instead of what the sensor is actually recording. It is then baked in our footage and there is nothing we can do about it in post. You can always add it in post if you feel the need to. I feel like you can have "too sharp" of an image when it comes to video and this is apparent when looking at skin. You don't want to see ever pore of the subject you are shooting. This is why people may use Pro Mist Filters or a vintage lens when shooting video as well. For Noise Reduction it really depends on what type of lighting you are shooting in. I mostly shoot outside or in a control lighting situation, so I don't have to worry about noise as much as someone who may be shooting in low light more often. The noise reduction settings in camera will soften the image a little bit as well and once again it will be baked into the footage and there will be nothing we can do about it. You can always add noise reduction in post if you really need it. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
Hey Jake, what do you think about e latest firmware update 2.7 for the gh5??? Am I the only one who thinks that autofocus is finally good?? Thank man for all your videos!
I was still on version 2.6 until I read your comment haha. I will have to play around with it more, but it does seem a little better than when I first got it. It depends on your frame rate I notice when I was using version 2.6. In 30fps it’s really good and I could actually trust it. In 24fps I found that it still had pulsing issues from time to time and it struggled at lower f stops still. Overall I think it’s becoming “good enough” but I don’t think it’s as good as my Sony quite yet. Thanks for watching!
Jake McHugh that sounds fantastic man. Definitely go for it!! And on top of that, it will help me a lot. Just bought the gh5 and I feel a bit lost with so many options about autofocus... (even though it’s not very profesional to use it...) Anyway, looking forward to see it!! 💪💪💪
Good idea! I wouldn’t mind doing something like that as well. What color profiles do you want to see compared? I was thinking SLog-2, cine4, Cine2 and no color profile at all. Thanks for watching!
@@JakeMcHugh I don't know much about picture profiles, and in some a6400 videos I saw they used pp1 for best natural in camera output for direct publishing. Now when I change to pp1 in my camera I don't see any difference in no pp and pp1. So I was confused. Currently I use standard creative style with day light white balance. In your video you can show comparison between standard creative style and different Picture Profiles (best according to you) and tell what settings to use to get best in camera natural colors for direct publishing
new sub here, i have a question, am on my Lumix 1" sensor and i want to get a decent quality straight out of the camera, ill be shooting product reviews for youtube and shoot myself talking to the camera (so mostly low light) what picture profile and settings should i do ? and how to replicate your look in this video straight out of the camera ? thanks,
I'm pretty sure that most of all the Panasonic Cameras allow you to be able to change photo settings, even the 1" sensor cameras like yours. What you will want to do is go under the photo style settings and change it to Natural. It will probably be set to Standard by default which is a good profile for straight out of camera colors as well. You may be able to adjust some settings inside the photo style like Contrast, Saturation, Noise Reduction etc. but for your case I would just start with the default settings since your camera won't be able to record all the data that the GH5 can with shooting in 10 bit and then if you feel like you really need to change anything from there you can play around with it. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Thanks bro, truly appreciated ? So can i get a look like urs straight out of the camera assuming i have good lighting? Or is color grading the secret to achiever this look ?
I'm not sure what you mean exactly by neutral picture profile, but if you mean just a normal or default setting then that would be the "Standard" picture profile. You can get some good results with this profile as well, but I do find it to be a bit more contrasty and would recommend using natural over it. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
My skin tends to fall a little on the red side on most camera profiles, but it's the worst with Cinelike D. I think if you went into the custom settings and bumped the hue adjustment it would clean this up a little more. Thanks for watching!
Personally I usually always shoot in RAW for photos, but if I ever need a straight out of camera JPEG then I still prefer Natural. Thanks for watching!
@@JakeMcHugh So noob question here...but does RAW mean that the picture profile doesn't matter? Like does RAW include ALL of the picture profile settings?
Most of the time, yes the picture profile doesn't matter when shooting in RAW. The only thing I have seen where it affects RAW images is on Sony Cameras, and I'm not completely sure on that. Shooting RAW is best because it captures all the data it receives from the camera's sensor in an uncompressed, untouched file which allows you to recover or edit photos that were not the best exposed. When shooting in JPEG sometimes the details that were captured from the Camera's sensor is removed and the look (from the picture profile) is then baked into the image and you can't edit or move the colors around as much. I hope this helps!
The Font from the thumbnail is called "True Lies" and the one I use for the lower thirds in the video is called "Bebas Neue" which I love using. What do you think of the other two profiles so far? Thanks for watching!

I know the Sony is too expensive for me but would he a great perfect option. Xt4 was solid untill I saw its stabilisation which is terrible. Black magic is a beast but lack autofocus which might be annoying, no stabilisation (but I could in the future buy a vlogging camera and have a good video camera that doesn't need autofocus, so blackgamic might be a good idea) G9 has decent autofocus, good quality, great stabilisation and pretty good video features. Gh5 has unlimited recording, older and not as good sensor, worse autofocus, good stabilisation aswell. I need help because I can't decide! Hopefully somone can help. (if I'm gonna get a Xt4 the blackmagic is cheaper and is a much better option so I don't think I want the Xt4)
It depends on your needs. Out of all of those cameras the XT4 or the G9 is the best hybrid camera video/photo. The best video is as you say the blackmagic and GH5. But best overall for video is 7s iii, since it has stellar autofocus and the best low light. So you could use that for videography and for vlogging as well.
@@ahojahojish wait wtf I just noticed. The gh5 and g9 both need a external recorder to do 4k 60p at 10bit 🤯 that literally gives me no reason to go for the gh5 over the g9. What do you think about this?
@@Provolt For me its not a big deal. You can do 4K 60 in 8 bit. Or you can go 1080p 60 in 10bit 422. Which I have to be honest the lumix cameras have really really sharp 1080p and I cant see much difference between the 4K and 108p. Seems like you really need a pro cinema camera. Which on the other hand is not good for vlogging or shooting stills. You cant have everything in one body. As I said the GH5 or G9 will be the best options as far as hybrids go. I would choose the GH5 is video is the primary focus. Then the G9 or XT4 if you want more photography options and abit better autofocus. Then again, if you need a cinema camera, then you wont really use autofocus and use manual focus anyways, so just get the black magic, but be prepared its useless for vlogging and photography and pretty much no autofocus.
@@ahojahojish but what video features does the gh5 include over the g9? All I've seen is a inferior older sensor, higher mgbps (which idk if its really that important), unlimited time limit and better slomotion but that's it? Am I correct? Doesn't seem like a good tradeoff just for worst autofocus and photo features
@@Provolt Yeah, I wouldnt say the GH5 has superior slomo, its the same. It has features like anamorphic shooting, vectorscope and waveforms (which you have on the G9 also after the update) The G9 can also do 4K 10bit in body, so after the update it basicaly has most of the GH5 features + better iso performance. But to be honest for video the autofocus isnt good on either of them, G9 is a little bit better, but the autofocus is still slow and not reliable.

There was two of them. The one that has me in the shots was the Panasonic 12-35mm F2.8 and all the shots with the kids on their bikes was shot with a helios 44m-4 on a speedbooster. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@JakeMcHugh Wow, the 18-35 Panasonic......never would of thought. I have the same lens. Did you use a gimbal or handheld. Your skills are really good. I did subscribe.
I always shoot handheld unless I'm doing real estate. I feel like gimbals slow me down most of the time. Thanks for the sub!
Great Video mate 👍🏻
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing your settings with us.
No problem! Thanks for watching!
What if I would go 10 bit for the natural profile? Would it matter much, comparing to 8 bit in natural?
Not too much of a difference I would say. You will always be better off and would be less likely to run into color grading problems (banding etc) when shooting in 10 bit though. There was a mixture of 10 bit and 8 bit in both profiles throughout this video here. Thanks for watching!
thanks big dawg!
I love that the GH5 is still the standard by which all other camera's are judged though haha.
For sure. This camera was ahead of it's time and I think it really pushed other companies to include features like 10 bit in their newer cameras. A win-win for us consumers!
2024 I'm still using it more than my s52x
cine d is really nice but it does not have the texture that natural has.
Natural would definitely be the way to go in your situation! Thanks for watching!
The natural profile looked better in my opinion
I agree. I like how it handles the Skintones and blacks much better. I think I will continue using it moving forward. Thanks for your input and for watching!
Question, so I’m a G9 user but how come when it comes to video creatives usually put noise and sharpness and -5, Dont you want a sharp image?
Jake McHugh thanks for the advice!
Natural is the best. Cine D has some Orange Skintones and somtimes is hard to tweak. my recomendations is Natural And V-LOG(if you need it).
I agree with you 100%! I'm glad I made the switch when I did and haven't looked back. Thanks for watching!
@@JakeMcHugh By the way great channel!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoy the content!
Jake McHugh i am sure you could do an amazing video about the new 2.7 firmware update with lots of views... no videos about it yet...😉 cheers man!
hahaha I was just thinking about that as well! Along with doing an autofocus comparison against the Sony a6400!
Jake McHugh that sounds fantastic man. Definitely go for it!! And on top of that, it will help me a lot. Just bought the gh5 and I feel a bit lost with so many options about autofocus... (even though it’s not very profesional to use it...)
Anyway, looking forward to see it!! 💪💪💪
Can you make similar video for Sony a6400. Like Best Color Settings in Sony a6400?
In your video you can show comparison between standard creative style and different Picture Profiles (best according to you) and tell what settings to use to get best in camera natural colors for direct publishing
new sub here,
i have a question, am on my Lumix 1" sensor and i want to get a decent quality straight out of the camera,
ill be shooting product reviews for youtube and shoot myself talking to the camera (so mostly low light)
what picture profile and settings should i do ? and how to replicate your look in this video straight out of the camera ?
thanks,
I'm pretty sure that most of all the Panasonic Cameras allow you to be able to change photo settings, even the 1" sensor cameras like yours.
Jake does the Panasonic gh5 have a Neutral picture profile
I'm not sure what you mean exactly by neutral picture profile, but if you mean just a normal or default setting then that would be the "Standard" picture profile. You can get some good results with this profile as well, but I do find it to be a bit more contrasty and would recommend using natural over it. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
With all the colour profiles available why Just choose between those 2 - Many people also like Cine-V. I actually think VLOg-L is quite easy to colour
You looked kinda red but the line was on the skin tone. Strange
My skin tends to fall a little on the red side on most camera profiles, but it's the worst with Cinelike D. I think if you went into the custom settings and bumped the hue adjustment it would clean this up a little more. Thanks for watching!
Which is the best for still photos rather than video?
@@JakeMcHugh perfect summary! Thank you so much!!
I like that font bro what's it called ?
I use the g9 mostly use cine d
Recently I been messing with cine v and hlg
The Font from the thumbnail is called "True Lies" and the one I use for the lower thirds in the video is called "Bebas Neue" which I love using. What do you think of the other two profiles so far? Thanks for watching!
@@JakeMcHugh nice thanks...and no prob man you got good content... ok so I RARELY used cine v until I messed with the settings and now I kind of dig in and same goes with hlg ..that one I have never really used just shot some random clips but they both got me interested.. The standard and natural on the G9 rarely look good. From your video It looks like the gh5 has better color and look in those profiles
That’s interesting that you notice that much of a difference with natural on the GH5 vs G9. You would think they would be closer. What settings have you tried with natural? I haven’t tried HLG on the GH5, but I have on my Sony a6400, it’s a different workflow and I couldn’t get into it. I’ll have to maybe give cinelike V a try sometime!
@@JakeMcHugh honestly when i go through the color profiles 95% of the time when it gets to natural it looks meh.. way to dark and just crappy lol in your video on the gh5 actually looks amazing lol
@@JakeMcHugh certain times the natural is good but thats more so for photos not so much video in my exp
do you use automatic iso??
Very rarely, the only time I would really use it is if I’m vlogging. Thanks for watching!
thnx again man
Glad I could help!!
I think standard mode looks the best.
Nice! Do you dial back any of the settings inside the color profile?
@@JakeMcHugh I turn down sharpness and saturation. Besides that I don't do anything lol
Can you link your white balance cards?
You got it! I just updated the Description and you can find it in there. Thanks for watching!
Can any camera experts help me here are my options
Xt4, gh5, g9, blackmagic 4k, A7s iii
I'm looking to use them for all around Videography, like car broll, real estate video, basically a good broll camera with possibly vlogging and photo features.
I know the Sony is too expensive for me but would he a great perfect option. Xt4 was solid untill I saw its stabilisation which is terrible. Black magic is a beast but lack autofocus which might be annoying, no stabilisation (but I could in the future buy a vlogging camera and have a good video camera that doesn't need autofocus, so blackgamic might be a good idea)
G9 has decent autofocus, good quality, great stabilisation and pretty good video features.
I did a lot in cine D. But natural seems better for my talking head shots. I will test it out ^^ I like the gh5 I think it is a very good camera
Yeah I think natural helps a lot with the skintones compare to Cinelike D. It is a really great camera for the money. Thanks for watching!
cine D is crap. thats what i learned from my G85 and GH5s. Since then i use only Vlog-l or natural. Trying to switch to HLG sometimes.
Haha yeah I just can't go back to it with the skintones I get. I have been using Portrait with some different settings for a while now and it's been really surprising me a lot. I might have to make a video comparing it to natural and Cinelike D. Thanks for watching!
@@JakeMcHugh thanks for making contetnt))
Natural for sure
I agree. I think moving forward it will be what I use! Thanks for watching!
@@JakeMcHugh Btw, thank you Jake for making such a great video with comprehensive comparisons of the color profiles. I picked up a GH5 fairly recently and have found many of your tips helpful!
Awesome! I’m glad I could help!
sorry but the gradings look just plain awful
