- Like most new Baofeng releases, more confusion about same models but listed with different features from different vendors .....
This review covers the 5RM wihich is basically a dual band radio with Airband, and some nice features we are now finding on most newer radios.

I find the radio interesting. I got my 5RM off Amazon. It is tri-band, dual watch, air band, Wx channels, and freq finder. When I put the meter on her I was getting 10.7w on 2m, 4.4w on 1.25m, and 7.4w on 70cm. SWR was 1.6, 1.8, and 1.5 respectively. I am going to continue playing with this new girl. Tomorrow, we hook her to the J Pole and see how far across Texas we get.
Thank you for that information, everyone appreciates having all the knowledge we can get, shared across!!
How's the factory antenna?
@@williamwiese9963 I will say ‘better’ than the old Baofeng shorties that came before. Reception is decent and clear.
I hope you continue to heal up!
Thank you!!
I'm on my 3 back surgery. I hope you healing well. 🙏 for you.
@@mikeyob4271 thank you my friend!! Slowly ….
@fittoat9261
Same here. Please try an walk as much as possible.
This radio cost the same thing I spent for lunch today. Tomorrow, I will still have the radio! The output was tested by Jim W6LG (on TH-cam) and found to comply with FCC requirements.
There are some conflicting results as per some different TH-cam videos ….. but they are getting somewhat better!
depends? triband Baofengs are still generally sproggy, all they do take a turn off the TX PA bandpass filter coils so it cut above around 240MHz instead of around 180MHz
Dang that search is fast, compared to the old school uv -5r. Just bought this AR 5 RM. Great video
Thank you.
I don't see the point of a color screen on all these new radios. Can't see it without the backlight, can't see it in sunlight, and it uses more power. IMO it's a downgrade.
I much prefer the Quansheng UV-K5/6 display.
I love these beefy radios they rock and great on FRS,MURS very well gotten excellent range on those channels
If you're used to how the UV5R functions you can figure this one out pretty quickly. I had a Radtel RT590 (apparently a rebrand of the Quesheng UV5K) that was a nightmare to program. The 5RM is much more user friendly.
I am looking for someone with this exactly model who could figure out how to program to adjust squelch levels in chirp or other one. Had you tried it already?
I got the Abree 320a antenna, the Tri band one. Get great reception (for an HT) on all bands: FM, Air, NOAA, 2m, 1.25m, 70cm, GMRS. This is the HT I keep on my side table.
hi just wondering do I need an airband specific antenna for that. I have just got one for airband specifically and I am completely beginning for that
When you checked output power were you on battery or plugged into power? Years ago my htx202 would output higher power when plugged in. When driving my mobile Amp it would jump from 25 watts when on battery to 35 watts when plugged into the car. That gave me anywhere from 1 watt (radio alone low power) up to 35 watts with Amp and radio plugged in.
Only using battery power, on a fully charged battery!
Chinese handys running on 2x li-ion cells (7.8v nominal) have internal regulation
to cut out the TX if over 8.4v
How is the Airband moulation? - on my 17BK it is quite bad, muffled and distorted, i have heard the updated Quangshen and may get it, 73, Levi in Sweden
I want one!
Use the Amazon link and get one. Not a bad radio!
Which airband antenna did you put on it?
I bought a couple of eBay that are tuned for 108-137 MhZ. They are similar to NA771s (15” or so) but tuned a little different. 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you, I'm having issues connecting to my local GMRS repeater here, in tones and out tones are set with an5.0 offset like the repeater calls for. No luck. I went with the Nagoya triband antenna. The repeater here is a GMRS. I'm puzzled
@@williamwiese9963 go for an unloaded 6 inch 1/4wave for 460MHz
Hello, can you tell me if we can unlock this device to have the entire band from 18 to 1300 MHz like on the quansheng UV-K5? Are there any modified firmware? thank you 73 Did F4CEW
In one simple word, NO!
Where did you find that 17 gps I almost got a gmrs pro
The ONLY place that sells them! Global on AliExpress.
Which one is a better overall, this one, UV17 or the UV21? Thanks
I cannot answer that because I have not tested the UV21 (and probably do not intend to for now) but the Uv17 Pro GPS is very good unit for what it offers. I am currently carrying the TIDRADIO H3 as an EDC, and am very happy with it!
which UV17? i've countered at least 7 versions now
Between the 5rm and the H8. What would you get?
H8 all day long! I have several, and my EDC is the H3!!
Morning...
I'm looking for a Baofeng radio that might incorporate as many features as possible?
I've been looking at the 8 watt uv5r, and the uv5g-plus, I think...liked them all, but i see that this one has the air traffic capability.
Woukd this model have also all of the other features as the basic UV5r, UV5r-plus?
Little bit comfusing, as im just getting started.
Thanks...
Good morning Dave. Baofengs are certainly good starter radios. But lately I have been happier with the TIDRADIO products, and especially the latest model the H3! I already did an early review on it, but will be putting up another one soon. It has ALL the features, can be programmed via Bluetooth off your phone, or even with the standard USB C cable, and on CHIRP, handles all frequencies, has charger and USB C charging, is color, has airband and a lot more! Just my two cents my friend!
The UV-5G Plus is GMRS only. I've got that and the 5RM. I'd get the 5RM.
@@fittoat9261
Appreciate your response, interesting - I'm going to check it out, now.
Thanks, again...
@@boogaloonick7526
Thank you, seem like great radios...
@@fittoat9261
Do the "HAM" versions also have GMRS capabilities? And vice-versa?
Also, listening to air traffic seems like a plus!
Thanks, again...
Just grabbed one to compliment my ftm 500 lol
The latest UV-5RH now has Airband, as does the Baofeng UV K5, they are all UV-5RM
Thanks for the review. Does the 5RM have channel banks? That is one thing I really appreciate about the UV-17 pro gps. I could live without the GPS, but I do like banks.
Unfortunately, NO .... it does have 999 memory slots, and IS CHIRP compatible, but NO banks!
AFAIK only the UV18 pro GPS also has banks
Hi....can I ask....the Baofeng UV-17 M which seems to have airband....from CHINA only to the UK.
Have you tested one on airband......its only airband I am interested in......dont want to pay unidens prices.
I do hope your back is ok after your opp....gee not nice.
Nick from the UK.
Hi Nick, thank you! I am recovering slowly! You can get the RM from China, Aliexpress. Just MAKE SURE it states that it has Airband! Should cover 108-137 MHz. You want the 17RM NOT the RH! Good luck. I just ordered the ‘NEW’ UV-K5 Plus? Which looks like the Quansheng with a color screen! Waiting to receive, and then I will review it! Cheers mate!
@@fittoat9261 Only want it for its airband really.....but dont want to waste my money if it just like all the other so called airband radios......with very poor performace ie easy overloaded from strong nearby stations.
With most not being true AM......I am hoping the UV-17 range with airband is better.
Hard to get good info.
Glad to hear your on the mend.
@@nickaxe771 Did you see my airband comparison video? I have to say, I live close to an airport, so I have excellent reception. It
@@fittoat9261 I did watch it today.....most transmissions where scratchy and weak. from all radios.
I have a/c flying over my house at 1000....I am on my airports center line at 3 miles.
It how they would cope with that.
My 30 year old realistic base sets cope great....my 40 year old realistic hand held used to.....but its days are over now.
@@nickaxe771 Unfortunately, I agree with you! I have a Radio Shack mobile scanner and a handheld unit, and they BOTH do way better on reception. BUT. If you want an HT that will ALSO get airband, then either go with a high end (expensive) radio OR, go for a cheapie that will work - although not perfect.
I find the uv5h airband picks up better than the 5rm
You can't transmit on Airband can you?
Also, does the UV5R battery fit this radio?
NO you cannot! That battery will not fit!
@@fittoat9261 Didn't think so.
Good to know.
Also, about the custom radios Baofeng makes, do you know what their costs would be?
Say I wanted standard VHF airband but also UHF airband. On top of that say I wanted your standard VHF and UHF ham bands, I am genuinely curious to know how they would go about making such a design.
I would have no idea!! The concept is when you go to source sites in China, you can put your own brand name and make ‘some’ changes to an existing model (depending on order quantity) and there you go!!
@@fittoat9261 Oh interesting.
Thanks for the reply and your honesty. I truly appreciate it.
Does this model radio support the same 3800mAh extended battery as the UV-5R series?
Negative
Most BL5L are fake with a wheel nut in the bottom to give them extra weight
Try a magnet on the bottom, i wish i was joking. AFAIK all the camouflage ones are real
The counterfeiters fake simple
These radios give a shocking experience through the wristband hook and also via the clip screws during transmission.
Does the 5rm take large batteries
Not that I know of, or have seen or found - yet!
One more ? What is the rated TX power? I see it has 3 levels, but I don't see what the wattage is for them.
It is rated as a 10 WATT unit, but like all Baofengs, Max is about 7.5W on High, 4W on MID, and 1.2W on LOW!
I see bodies with UV-5RM and bodies with 5RM. Does enyone know if thees are the same?
The way these are marketed, it is really hard to tell what is going on!
😊🙌🏻🕊️
Thank you!
😎👍👍
Its pretty good for a Baofeng but their new model planning and features seems very random. Im surprised they are still getting away with them not being locked to HAM frequencies and most of them have bad spurious emissions.😐
More freedom is best. At least from the perspective of emergency use.
Promo SM
I wouldn't thank you. for what? What is the wattage of this one
Emergency spinal surgery. Yikes my man. That is most assuredly never a good thing! He4es to healing and hopefully being healthy from here on!
Thank you kindly! No it was not fun! Learning to walk again in my late sixties is a challenge, my one year old grandson is doing better than me! LOL.
waa f'n waaa
They are sloppy dirty on an analyzer.
Also do ppl really listen to air band while watching their paint dry?
yep
I listen to military aircraft with mine.
Spurious emissions 😂😂😂😂😂 hahahahhaah
@@dougevick9704what frequency??? I'd love to listen to the jets and planes out here.
Go to an air show with one and tell me it’s boring
