Wow! Your voice is like silk. Your breath support is amazing, you never left your chin on the high notes. You are very well trained. This gave me goosebumps. The battle of Culloden put my ancestor on a slave boat to the US and I was born here. My Scottish heritage means so much to me. It brought me to tears.
I found myself singing this to my 5 year old daughter this evening (the first 3 verses) that I remembered from my primary school days - she loved it! This is a beautiful version.
I was looking for a longer version after watching outlander! Though this is a different a singer I was not disappointed. What a beautiful song and what an amazing voice she has!!!
+Nerdrage20 The lyrics for the title song of Outlander are changed for the show. This is a traditional song, the Skye Boat song, and for Outlander Bear McCreary took the tune and put new words to it to fit Claire's story.
Original lyrics The Skye Boat Song [Chorus:] Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing, Onward! the sailors cry; Carry the lad that's born to be King Over the sea to Skye. Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar, Thunderclouds rend the air; Baffled, our foes stand by the shore, Follow they will not dare. [Chorus] Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep, Ocean's a royal bed. Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep Watch by your weary head. [Chorus] Many's the lad fought on that day, Well the Claymore could wield, When the night came, silently lay Dead on Culloden's field. [Chorus] Burned are their homes, exile and death Scatter the loyal men; Yet ere the sword cool in the sheath Charlie will come again.
I remember being taught this in primary school back in the 80's here in Ireland. When I looked at the lyrics I thought I got the melody instantly right for each verse - and coming here showed how right I was! Beautiful old song!
Every so often you hear or see something done by people which reminds you that the human race is quite capable of excellent things. The arrangement is superb and that last, sung note is sailing off into the labyrinthine mythology of history. Marvellous and better than Marvel.
This is such a beautiful song. I wish that it comemorated a happier event. The Jacobite movement was, nearly as I can observe, profoundly foolish, tragic, and ugly.
this song is absolute wonderful, have too some a litle of melancholy.So song sometimes for yours lirycs is touching and untill cry . I loved Outlander your story your principals characteres. all.
this is the original 16th century rendition. Outlander used the rendition from the 1800s but yes, it by rights is. Though, i prefer this version, not the Outlander version :)
Actually this version is the original, first published in 1884, the outlander theme song is an adaption of Robert Luis Stevenson's 1892 poem 'sing me a song of a lad that is gone' set to this tune.
The judges are musically illiterate. What happens is that judges 'dumb the music down' so it can be interpreted by rigid easy to interpret rules. It's the same with all forms of musical improvisation. Judges HATE anything that requires judgement or interpretation. The history of Gaelic music and dance is of 'Straight', non culturally or musically aware people tryiing to make it conform to strict rules. Did you know 'Highland Dance' is a completely artiificial construct with no relatonship to what people really danced in the Highlands?
+Andrew Stone With folk songs, there is no right or wrong way. You need to be open minded about the way folk songs are reworked. She's not misunderstanding anything - it's the way the song was arranged by Patrick Hawes. If you don't like his version, that's fine. Don't blame the singer.
+Sarah Rose It's a boat song. . . . . if you want to take it completely out context, sing it straight. Gaelic music, like African music is strongly syncopated with an emphasis on improvisation. She, and Patrick Hawes don't understand anything.

Original lyrics
The Skye Boat Song
[Chorus:]
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.
Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
Thunderclouds rend the air;
Baffled, our foes stand by the shore,
Follow they will not dare.
[Chorus]
Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep,
Ocean's a royal bed.
Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head.
[Chorus]
Many's the lad fought on that day,
Well the Claymore could wield,
When the night came, silently lay
Dead on Culloden's field.
[Chorus]
Burned are their homes, exile and death
Scatter the loyal men;
Yet ere the sword cool in the sheath
Charlie will come again.

The definitive version.. so tender emotional and beautiful.
Every so often you hear or see something done by people which reminds you that the human race is quite capable of excellent things. The arrangement is superb and that last, sung note is sailing off into the labyrinthine mythology of history. Marvellous and better than Marvel.

It's a boat song with a strong synocpated rhythm. This singer fails to understand that,. she singing it 'straight'

Andrew Stone You're the one who fails to understand, Andrew.
Yukiko Towner It's being sung straight

Is this another ode to that Charlie fellow that tried to get the throne of England?
The English throne was extinct when the Tudors ran out of spawn, but nice try
