    I've heard the term 2 bits all my life from family to t.v. which I already knew it was a quarter of a dollar. I knew they had 1 bit coins and or pieces, but did not know anything about Hawaii having coins! It never entered my mind. Very good to know about the history of some of Hawaii's coins!!
    Have a GREAT Day!!!

    Absolutely! The Kingdom of Hawaii issued fairly low mintage (relative to other large populations) and featured two of Hawaii's Kings, Kamehameha III and King Kalakaua. A key factor to keep in mind was that the Kingdom of Hawaii was illegally overthrown by the a small group of US businessmen and the US Marines under the threat of bloodshed. After the overthrown, Queen Liliuokalani went to Washington to visit President Grover Cleveland to implore him to order that the Kingdom of Hawaii be unoccupied and the throne returned to Her Majesty. President Cleveland immediately issued a written proclamation to Congress, and spoke on the floor of Congress advising that an immediate investigation should be initiated, and if the events that transpired were illegal, the US would vacate Iolani Palace, and allow Her Majesty to return to the throne. The investigation took several months by a US delegate. The delegate's report clearly advised that the efforts of the US businessmen and the US Marines were illegal, and the US was illegally occupying the Kingdom of Hawaii. He ends by advising Congress to return Her Majesty to the throne, and take any steps necessary to rectify the relationship between the two great nations. Sadly, a vote was held in Congress, and due to the Kingdom of Hawaii's strategic military location, Congress elected to rule against President Cleveland and the investigation, and instead chose to annex the Kingdom now that they had boots on the ground and obtained military control. The process happened in only a few short years, by 1893, the Kingdom of Hawaii was ripped away from the Hawaiian people and the Royal family, and Americans began melting and destroying Hawaiian currency. The nation's flag was lowered while playing Hawaii's national anthem and cut into strips and handed out to local Hawaiian citizens to remind them that no country could stand in the way of the United States. The US flag was raised to the top of Iolani Palace while the Star Spangled Banner played in the background. The events that occurred in the Kingdom of Hawaii inadvertently impacted the rarity and value of the remaining Hawaiian currency. You'll also notice that close to 80% of Hawaiian coin currency has been improperly cleaned or whizzed. Due to Hawaii's climate and sea water, many of the coins suffered oxidation and coloring. When locals would find the coins, they felt restoring the coin to show the bust of His Majesty was the proper thing to do. Today, very few Hawaiian coins are still in MS/BU grade status. Just remember, if you purpose a Hawaiian coin, remember what that coin's history represents. A Kingdom, a Crown, and a Nation was ripped apart and destroyed around the same period of that coins mintage. Hold on to it with remembrance, of what the Kingdom of Hawaii once was. A constitutional monarchy with a Constitution, government, military, highest literacy rate in the world, treaties with over 70-nations, and a culture, language, and way of life that was destroyed by greed and circumstance. The point is, these coins are VERY special. They are one of the few items that saw and witnessed the overthrow and illegal annexation of Hawaii Nei.

      You seem to very knowledgeable of these coins. I have two 1883 Hapawalu Coins and one ONE DIME coin. I'm not a coin collector and these happen to be gifted to me. I don't know if I should be taking care of these coins or just tossing them in back of a drawer. Any advice you can give me

    • @keoni_hokulea
      @keoni_hokulea ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dariussalgado3421 Absolutely take care of them! The coins from the Hawaiian Kingdom are actually quite rare in any denomination. After the US tried to melt and destroy the currency after the overthrow, a small % was kept by Hawaiian citizens and carried over from generation to generation. Sadly, most of the Kingdom’s coins are in poor condition due to lack of care, inculcation, and locals finding them from 1920-2000 and improperly cleaning them after being found. If you have these coins, hang onto them or consider getting them encapsulated and graded. You hold history in your hands 🙌 🤙🏾

      I'm not really into coins. I kinda want to get rid of them. But I don't know about getting them checked or what not. Your right. They don't look well taken care of. But everything is still legible. Do you know of anywhere I can sell them or get them looked at.

    I have a few Hawaii coins, none in these grades but i love them and continue to collect them. There is a waterfall that kids used to throw coins off of for good luck back in the late 1800s, some have been found at the bottom of waterfalls. Years back, the banks used to give these out to good clients too.
