I really liked Andor too and i am disapointed that we will only get one more season. Like Disney trys to show us that we can get good Star Wars from them but they just wont give it to us.
the real reason was diego luna and tony gilroy were just burnt out from the intense process of making this show. The amount of planning that went into this really impressive but ultimately not sustainable i guess
The problem with Andor is that it did bad in the ratings when compared to the Mandalorian. Mainly because it was going head to head with House Of The Dragon.
I think you did Dedra and the Corpos a bit dirty here. Ferrix was left in the hands of Tigo, Dedra was there only to direct the capture of Andor. Most of the measures that were enforced were ordered by Tigo. Also the violence erupted because of him, not Dedra. Dedra even removed the sniper teams when they were discussing the plan on the balcony, since she thought it was a bad idea to shoot when there is a crowd. Also the blueberries looked well trained. Had a plan to box in the suspects, instinct to recognize suspicious civilians and not just say "nah...let her run, I don't get paid enough to chase people that just run when they see me...", had tactical movement when crossing open terrain, use cover, set up on-the-fly ambush of fleeing suspects (if the speeder was not a bomb) and good aim to disable the engine. Their only problem was lack of discipline when they shot the boyfriend and also when the first team engaged Andor and Luthen before waiting for the other teams to converge and surround the building. And lets not forget, if it wasn't for plot armor, even with only one team of four security officers entering a well-prepared ambush (bomb at the door) and engaging two career criminals that know how to fight, Cassian would've been shot there for good, instead of wounded.
I also think that the Corpation tolerated local Crime, but not big Crime. They did nothing against local Corruption but as long you paid there was no problem. And in that Case it was based on the local Industry. If something like the Pykes or the Hutts tried to gain a Foothold, I am sure they would have intervened.

Ferrix is pretty much a dream job to govern, it's got a strong community with a healthy culture where people trust and look out for each other, it's got productive industry, and isn't even a source of political unrest normally. Preox never goes there because they never need to go there. So of course the Empire messes it up in every possible way.

I had to agree if you know the history behind the corporate sector authority you'll know that they worked in tandem with the empire. The empire is what made them have the power that they have also the empire also provided them with the equipment and the means to uphold the law as well as wage war if necessary.
I think they’re more like the military and police units maintained by the East India Company in real life - but not really because the CSA is a government it isn’t a corporation itself
Good video Alan - a nice return to form. Intelligent analysis with a link to real world problems. The scene is Andor (0:28) reveals a lot about the coping mechanisms of the wider Imperial ecosystem. When the supervisor closed the doors for privacy and gave Cyril the inside details re: "what is expected of him"... it was a brilliant summary of the measures that mid-ranking functionaries adopt to stay under the radar. Cyril is wonderful character for his confounding mix of naïveté and cunning. Ideologically driven he genuinely sees something in the Empire that his preceding generation know doesn't exist. This is another reason why Disney need to give this franchise more respect - and invest in a proper second season ... not a multi-year anthology: the themes they are wrestling with are 100% linked to IRL present day ... a world where the ideologically driven ignore the red flags of misappropriated power and the real threats to pluralistic liberal democracy.
At 5:06 you reminded me the 4 different power classes. Those are the beaurocrats which produce nothing, but they have great managerial skills, the merchants with the ability to create great economic prosperity, the prists which introduce moral and ethical values in a society and lastly the warriors which provide security and peace. Usually the question is what is the best class, but reality impose on us how to balance each class in order to have a decent society. As for a source to explain the relation for these classes better than what I can in the comments I suggest going to the youtube channel Pilgrims Pass at the video discussing the 4 types of dystopia.

I love how Pre-Mor Security are basically a less well-funded and well-motivated version of the Naboo Guard that we saw in Phantom Menace. The security troops on Fondor or Castell are probably a lot higher-grade: not everywhere's rich from trade-lane tariffs like Naboo, and it's clear that Ferrix is pretty low on the pecking order in the view of ISB.

I just watched Andor, I still need to finish the last episode, but I shouldn't have waited this long. The first episode threw so much information at me so fast. No magical force destiny bs, just good old fashion oppression and rebellion
Reminds me a lot of Corpos in the Cyberpunk universe as well. Imagine if Google or Microsoft became so powerful that they could hire their own militaries and police forces to uphold any company interests. In such a dystopian world, state and federal governments would have to have failed so badly that private security firms and corporations would have to step in to maintain any sort of power and control, fragile as it may be. Andor did an amazing job of show-casing how oppressive an environment feels with corporations/empires running the galaxy.
I actually really liked introduction of tactical blueberries. Stromtroopers were always a staple of the series, but they supposed to be more elite force of the Empire, but they've been so fodderized that noone really thinks about them this way.
Another thing to consider about the Empire taking over from Pre-Mor. Not only did this trigger an open rebellion in the populace, but odds are it also converted some of those laid off Pre-Mor security forces into rebels too, along with the corporate weapons and vehicles that the Empire had no use for. Like you said, they were probably getting better benefits and pay than a Stormtrooper and we see how after losing their jobs, people like Syril end up in less satisfying, probably less lucrative positions. Sure, Syril has the demeanor of a proto-fascist, but all those cereal-eating lazy corpo operators probably won't make it in the tightly run program of the Imperial military or paramilitary sectors. Even Syril himself seems to be realizing the flavorless disciplinarian reality of the Imperial bureaucracy isn't quite what he was expecting.
Oddly enough, while I think Andor is *the* greatest show (not just Star Wars) to come out since The Next Generation, I can't stand Rogue One. I probably wouldn't have watched Andor if it was not for your channel and the many vids you had done on it up to that point--it piqued my interest enough to give it a shot, and I was hooked by the end of the first episode. The writing, dialog, and direction are nearly perfect. Only the spinning-laser-freighter scene could be clipped out without losing any meaningful shots.
Economic/ social schools of thought can on average have better or worse outcomes, but they matter much less than specific individuals. A lot of risk/reward dynamics. The correct answer is always contextual, rarely as easy as taking the moderate position.
7:31 Yeah but there are a lack of Judicial forces anywhere. You always seem to grossly overestimate the amount of authority the Republic actually used in terms of law enforcements. Yes, Jedi and Judicials would embark on peacekeeping missions when issues that affected the Core/noticeable crises were occurring, but most of the actual law enforcement was done by regional paramilitaries and gendarmes. The only difference between Naboo and a corporate authority is the form of government that Naboo uses, and the Republic doesn't care what type of government regional governments have. Even if the Republic claims to be anti-slavery, that doesn't really matter if they don't enforce their laws. 7:36 I strongly disagree. What kind of values does the Republic actually have that make them opposed to corporate control? Yes, a decent number of major power players in the Republic like Alderaan often vocally support democratic, moderate ideas and use their soft power to encourage humanitarian causes, but the Republic itself has never post-Ruusan been the faction of law and order. The Republic's hands-off strategy combined with their outright acceptance of a variety of colonial and un-democratic governments within its borders and its tolerance of various powerful slavers (even some Republic senators profited from slavery) proves that the Republic was in fact supportive of small corporate states and other regional powers. Remember, the Trade Federation only became a cause for concern for the Republic when they had a nigh complete monopoly of the trade routes, not before that point.

Something about their uniforms, like the specific blue and red colours, remind me of late 19th Century French Uniforms, the same that the French wore in the early years of WW1.
I worked security and knew a guy who literally did what Syril did with his uniform - he got it tailored on his own dime and had custom rank insignia stitched on when they made him a "senior officer" which was basically just a bullshit title they'd bestow upon guys with long tenure at the company who didn't (or couldn't) get a real promotion to sergeant. He was the sort of stereotypical gung-ho Paul Blart type who had a chip on his shoulder for failing the police exam and just like Syril he'd go way overboard trying to aggressively enforce the most trivial rules and infractions which caused shitloads of unnecessary incidents and paperwork. Naturally everyone hated him and he eventually got "laid off" for having too many complaints lodged against him.
I will agree that being an extremist is just a way for someone to miss the forest through the trees, but being a centrist just for the sake of not wanting to pick a side has the exact same problem.
@@MrChickennugget360 WTF is even a "centrist"? in Nazi germany centrism would be being a literal nazi. in the 40s Soviet union it would be being a stalinist. in 1840s America it would be someone supporting the continued existance, but not expansion of slavery. All of those were just supporting evil with their centrism. Being neutral in face of evil is legitmizing said evil.
And being a centrist because you _are_ picking sides, refusing the party lines and picking and choosing only the good ideas no matter who they come from, is the opposite.

I thought the modified uniform was a bit underrated. In the military you are "subtely" encouraged to have your camo uniform tailored. HOWEVER, if caught with a tailored uniform you will be chewed out and told you are in vioation of an order. Its a weird middle ground. Here however the guy added piping and pockets which would be considered completely out of line That being said tailoring is typically dependent on rank, if a low rank does it they might get chewed out. If a staff nco does it then it will probably be ignored and if an nco does it, then it depends on who wants them promoted, a bald first sergeant wants tailored uniforms, one with hair will chew you out for tailoring your uniform. The trick is to have it tailored only a little, enough to make someone question it and allow you plausible deniability.
Going to make a recommendation to your followers. West end games produced a reference book called the corporate sector authority. I recommend purchasing that a lot of great information explaining how the corporate sector authority evolved also how it works and what authority they truly have. The uniforms that you see in andor aka the blueberries. That is tribute to to a Star wars action figure from the Disney line. It was introduced in the Star tours figure line. Same color shonen and andor but it was an imperial officer's uniform. Get a chance check it out Star tours action figures. I love the fact that Andor took a lot of reference from The west end game reference manual on the corporate sector authority.. I also recommend reading all of the original Han Solo novels by Brian Daly I believe. A lot of corporate sector authority stuff in those novels.
Thinking about the juxtaposition between the Andor corpo system interface with police, and that same situation in Altered Carbon. Money is power, power looks out for itself, and the police are used accordingly.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, does this mean that a combination of the corporate security force's hands-off attitude and general lack of overall lethality is what kept the Rebellion from gaining too much traction on that planet?

I really liked Andor too and i am disapointed that we will only get one more season. Like Disney trys to show us that we can get good Star Wars from them but they just wont give it to us.
the real reason was diego luna and tony gilroy were just burnt out from the intense process of making this show. The amount of planning that went into this really impressive but ultimately not sustainable i guess
The problem with Andor is that it did bad in the ratings when compared to the Mandalorian. Mainly because it was going head to head with House Of The Dragon.
@@dolandarkxgrandayy6953True enough, but I think this says more about the maturity and priorities of the majority of the Star Wars fanbase.
Wait we're getting another season? I thought it was dropped entirely. I'm looking forward to it now, lol
@ Yeah. They said they would be doing 2 seasons.
It got delayed until next year.
Only if they didn't give a nice slice to right people in the corporation.
@@stonefox2546 If it's Couriers or Smugller of the Syndicates, i would say yes. With a good Accountant you could even book it as clean Money. Companies like clean profits and i mean in a legal point of view clean money. The minimal Ammount of possiblel Taxes paid. No Taxes you are shot down. Syndikates don't pay Taxes. They would under cut Companys in every way. So a Foothold of a Syndikat would mean a lose of Profits for the Company as a Whole. To hide this the paid People would have to Correct the Profits out of there own Pockets.
Ferrix is pretty much a dream job to govern, it's got a strong community with a healthy culture where people trust and look out for each other, it's got productive industry, and isn't even a source of political unrest normally. Preox never goes there because they never need to go there. So of course the Empire messes it up in every possible way.
I've watched numerous Star Wars commentary channels, and I keep coming back to yours. I've come to the conclusion that this is the best Star Wars commentary channel on TH-cam. Thanks, for the relentless content, that is *always* informative and enlightening. May the Force be with you, always, Alan.
You know every time I watch your videos I can’t help but think that you should be the kind of person we have in government. Your ability to explain and understand multiple viewpoints is impressive. You’re always educating even though you’re talking about a fictional story and it’s so seemless how you do it. Thank you for your great content that I’ve been able to enjoy for so many years!
I disagree about the mall cop comparison. They're more like a PMC working in tandem with the government, akin to Wagner or Blackwater.
0:23 selfish right alongside you Alan.
God I love when I see Uploaded 17 seconds ago, LESS GOO
5:49 this was beautifully said. Thank you.
Thanks!
That’s wild. I’m watching that video for completely unrelated reasons.
Interesting.
Hans uniform in empiral army looks more those guys corporate uniform
I thought I wouldn’t like Andor. Then, I was down with injury and didn’t haven’t anything to watch, so I tried it out. I really liked it👍
6:14 if they deal in absolutes they are definitely full of Sith
That's why they were neither Jedi nor Sith.
I freaking LOVE Andor! It deepens the lore a lot and makes Star Wars feel like a more living universe. Because I play a lot of RPGs set in the world of Star Wars, Andor is a great source of inspiration for quests, worlds, factions, etc. I wish there would be 10 more seasons.
I want to thank BOTH Denise Gough and Tony Gilroy for CARING enough to learn and Give us good Star Wars after proclaiming they weren't SW Fans. I wish Leslie would have done that.
The Star Wars story I've always wanted is basically a Louis L'Amour story with a Jedi as the protagonist. Basically, ordinary people facing extreme, but otherwise ordinary threats, and added by an exceptional, but relatable hero.
the tactical blueberries don't get themselves killed nearly as often as stormtroopers either .. this is a big cost savings too...
Reason I finally watched Andor was because of this channel and its break down of the content and lore from the show.
6:08, I think you meant " Only a Sith deals in absolutes!"
wich is an absolute so your a sith.
I feel like I’ve grown up w this guy. Glad he’s still making videos. I’ll never get why Disney doesn’t sponsor him to market Andor etc.
I wish we could see the Blueberries working along side the brown shirts from legions
Blueberries = patrol police
Brown shirts = SWAT or SRT
Andor is actually a legit & good show..
Good vid
Looks like a star trek uniform
Love your content!
I just realized that room temperature IQ means a whole different thing to Americans than to the rest of the word due to the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit. I always thought it was a massive overexaggeration to say that, but in Fahrenheit it's not as low an IQ as in Celsius.
It’s been a while , nice setup bro bro 😎 👍
Great topic! Thank you.
What happened to the sci fi window screen background? Love that vibe, sets me in…
Tactical blueberry’s are so good
Andor is the best Star Wars content.
The Chief Inspector knew how the game was played (his "downplaying" for the lack of a better term the deaths of two officers to Syril shows this), unfortunately he failed to factor in how much real control he had over Syril
From the thumbnail I thought those were WWI French soldiers who were more skilled and trained than Imperial German Strumtruppen. I checked the comments and saw everyone talking about Star Wars instead. 😅😅😅
Karn is such a good character. He successful tracks down a murder and seems to takes the law very seriously.
He is the guys who just wants to good.
I'm so stoked for Andor season 2.
1:23 First responder here this is like the dichotomy of the euthastic rookies vs. the old veterans who have seen everything and are borderline burnout 😂
Relatability makes a story, whichever setting it may be placed in, instantly more realistic.
Even Space Wizzard'ism, medieval grand magic or some cyber post apocalypse.
Love this vid
I like Star Wars for the story. I just find the story cringe worthy when the in universe logic is inconsistent
Wouldn't say ‘cringe-worthy’.
More like ‘facepalm-worthy’.
@@brettcarter5954 But I think the biggest issue is that most people don't understand Star Wars conceptually and only see it for its affectations like the Jedi, lightsabers, Rebels, Empire, etc.
I think that the creator not liking Star Wars is misunderstood. I believe he just wasn’t a fan the same way some people have more interest in LOTR or people like Nick Cage who enjoys really old obscure cinema.
It is.
He’s more of a casual fan rather than a diehard lorehead.
He's a fan. Just had to say he wasnt because disney has this peculiar way of thinking that non fans f star wars are better at making star wars. Some kind of unbiased approach to production
There is a city in Siberia called Norilsk which is only accessible by aircraft and is controlled by a mining corporation called Norilsk nickel which owns and controls essentially everything
I just watched Andor, I still need to finish the last episode, but I shouldn't have waited this long. The first episode threw so much information at me so fast. No magical force destiny bs, just good old fashion oppression and rebellion
Andor is phenomenal. I will forever cry fury that this show was gutted from its original 5 season run.
10:38 it wasn’t perfection that Palpatine cared about. He cared about power and control. His yearning for control was “unnatural”.
14:48 we really need more technical information on the ships and equipment in the latest canon.
Is there sci-fi in universe to Star wars. When talks about turning back tome beaming him of this planet
Man, had only Cassian not taken a direct trip from the planet after his screw up.
Economic/ social schools of thought can on average have better or worse outcomes, but they matter much less than specific individuals. A lot of risk/reward dynamics. The correct answer is always contextual, rarely as easy as taking the moderate position.
I think they are pretty much like the private armies from the early XX century, like the Pinkertons in the US or La Forestal in Argentina
When i was in that industry. Yes, we (those that care) tried to improve our image with uniforms.
Video idea, best food in the galaxy, best food in galaxy for humans, most expensive, cheapest, planets to avoids based on cuisine. Tastest species... 😉😎
I thought tactical blueberries were those things the Gungans used in TPM
Again, Alan is able to get to the core economic elements of Star Wars - a totally novel perspective when compared to many of the content creators.
I will agree that being an extremist is just a way for someone to miss the forest through the trees, but being a centrist just for the sake of not wanting to pick a side has the exact same problem.
sometimes people are centrists because they actually listen to both sides of the argument.
@MrChickennugget360 that's why I added the "just for the sake of not wanting to pick a side" part
Maybe the Emperor wanted to trigger conflict n was hoping someone or thing would rise up n challenge him. Can't keep getting stronger if you aren't facing any more challenges
Andor is absolutely the best Small Screen Star Wars. And Clone Wars exists, so I don’t say it lightly…
I like to think people from starwars definitely formidable the regular person has survival insteald
The jail scenes in endor are really dark. Like something from warhammer 40k. You are just one of billions a commodity to be used and disposed off when no longer useful. Very empire , very Sith very Palp
I thought the modified uniform was a bit underrated. In the military you are "subtely" encouraged to have your camo uniform tailored. HOWEVER, if caught with a tailored uniform you will be chewed out and told you are in vioation of an order. Its a weird middle ground.
Here however the guy added piping and pockets which would be considered completely out of line
That being said tailoring is typically dependent on rank, if a low rank does it they might get chewed out.
Andor grew on me to be honest. I'm glad I stuck it out.
Thinking about the juxtaposition between the Andor corpo system interface with police, and that same situation in Altered Carbon. Money is power, power looks out for itself, and the police are used accordingly.
Tactical Blueberries lmao 😂
This show is... SO F'N GOOD.
Absolutely, the best of of the Disney+ Star Wars, in my opinion.
If Imp Blueberries were MORE cost effective why didn't the Empire have something similar for their Galactic wide Standard troops...?
Was Palps worried the Rebels an Galaxy wouldn't take them seriously an bust out laughing on site?? Especially if blueberries an the concept of such jokes is ALSO a thing in Star Wars... Bout EVERYTHING else is..
Even more so then that when you play random footage of the 'Blueberries' in action or on the march to the Empire March Soundtrack
So, correct me if I'm wrong, does this mean that a combination of the corporate security force's hands-off attitude and general lack of overall lethality is what kept the Rebellion from gaining too much traction on that planet?
Kinda crazy that Paul Blart ended up joining the secret police
Tactical Blueberries is officially what I will call police officers from now on.
Watch it nothing compares to Star wars 3 Allen ❤
To think…some self-professed “fans” are so incredibly blue eyed about Andor that they even proclaim it hurts the franchise when all it has done was to elevate it to heights of quality never before witnessed in the entire filmic franchise…
The Irony is that i think that Hyne was competent in his Position. He know his People. He did know if force would be needed.
At the Beginning he wanted to ignore the dead of two of his officiers. But they were at a Location that should not exist and would cost more that they normally should have (Corruption) and there wasn't any hint that they wanted to shout it down. I think they would'nt be able to, even if they wanted to, but i think Hyne did know that. But the Situiation did show that they were corrupt, which Hyne did'nt want to be let know. I think if it had been some Person like Kane ; who had been killed. Hyne would have reacted. Simply because he wasn't inkompetent or Corrupt.
So then...
Allen...
When will we see YOUR new S.W. production?
I'm not into star wars..never was. But Andor surprised me. Maybe it was the absence of "magic" stuff, just great story and acting.
Yes, the apathy, laziness and general indifference of these mall-cops (live and let live attitude) was more effective than having the Gestapo ISB take over and run things with an iron fist. You hardly ever saw the security guards, but the ISB and troopers were up in your face every day. More top-down leadership leading to a disaster.
The blueberry mode of security and policing just did not match with the doctrine of the empire though, even though it worked on ferrix and in their sector in general. Palpatine wanted the heavy hand and the ability to send in an isb agent and be able to find his most wanted. The strong arm of the empire is what created the strong will of the rebels. The search for andor radicalised the people of ferrix
"their greed really does limit the scope of their stupidity" :D
I love Andor too. Tried to talk others into wactuhing it as well, only successful once.
Alan! Did you seem drunk or high while recording this. Are you OK? Take care of your body..
