I think the most important thing I learned from this video is the existence of the Evercade. I don't know how that console escaped my attention. A retro console that uses cartridges of collection of Arcade games for each publisher? What a great idea.
I have one. It's OK, but a bit cheaply produced. The front pane is not glass, nor even sturdy plastic, but a thin sheet of plastic that gives way too much when pressed. Take a bottle of water, and press it lightly. That's how pressing the front pane feels. It's also very reflective, so might cause annoying glare depending on how you hold it and where the lights are. I also doubt it'll be very scratch resistant. I kinda wish someone would make a replacement front pane out of tempered glass, kind of like the replacement panes you can get for the GBA and Game Gear; I would swap out that front in an instant!

I love these videos that show hidden gems in the arcade pantheon. It also reminds me that it's been over 30 years and MAME still can't do sound emulation very well.

I'm so happy you mentioned the Evercade! I think it's a great system and it's been a fun thing to collect for, and also pretty affordable. Reminds me of the old days of playing games locally with friends. I know there's so many ways to play games now and I enjoy those as well, but the Evercade has really been a lot of fun for me and I hope more people enjoy it! And they also have some new games so you could do a VS drunk video one day! :)
I love that this game is basically the distilled version of what Europeans thought was American culture in the 90's....and to be honest they weren't far off!
Feeling mega huge Kaneko vibes with this one, with the overally WOAH HOLD UP presentation and blasty mono sound going on.. has that nice bootleg feel to it
It always amazes me how many classic games I've never heard about, even though I've been an avid gamer since the 90's. But what amazes me more is when I see games pushing hardware limits like at 0:11 that would have blown my 10-year-old mind.
I remember back in those days we sure crashed a lot military bases but it was always after we had stopped the flow beforehand, so we knew what we were getting into.
The character illustrations at the beginning look like modern title screens of cartoon games; comic book shading that makes the colours pop, the strangely minimal animation that adds almost nothing to a still image. As for the game, it looks great 🙂
Worth noting: it looks like you played this on an older version of MAME, which is why once you got in the spaceship it could only roll left and right (it should both move left and right AND have a roll-to-dodge move). The latest versions of MAME apparently fix this control quirk making it an even better game :)
Wow based on how the player characters were drawn I just assumed they were kids but then you hear them talk in the cutscene and it sounds like a middle-aged robot trying to do it's best action movie hero impression.

I'm not sure if it's humanly possible to be more 90s than the main characters in this game, but that's one of many reasons why this looks fun!

Thunder hoops 2 is another Gaelco game that just takes DBZ and 80s sci-fi & action movies into a blender to create the most badass game ever created.
