Lea Salonga VS Original Singers - Disney SONG Battle

- It's the 48th birthday of Disney legend Lea Salonga, who is not just the official singing voice of two Disney Princesses but has also covered many a Disney songs since time immemorial.
On this special day I decided to make this little 'Disney Song Battle' (another video series) in which I just compared her covers to the original singers of those particular songs.
In order to make the battle more fair, I added as many LIVE performances of the original singers as I could find (since ALL of Lea's covers are done LIVE)
The battle is divided into 11 rounds, which feature the following songs :-

My props to Lea for singing such a variety of songs and that too LIVE, she already has my respect. However, we're all still free to have preferences, and I'd love to know whom do you prefer in the following songs?

Hercules, Anastasia, and (God forgive me Queen Idina) Elsa are my only exceptions to this but seriously you can’t pit Lea against even the most accomplished of singers. Disney uses different voices for a reason: character individuality

There is no need to compare.. The Originals and Lea Salonga are great singers. Remember, Lea is also part of Disney’s theme song singers. She sang A whole New World in Aladdin and Reflection in Mulan. Every singer is unique and has a right song that fits their voice.

@@eduardochavacano the few percentage of their population you are not referring to are the ones who did not received a proper education or are from remote and rural areas. Filipino are known for their neutral accent in speaking the english language and are very fluent.

Lea is amaaaaazing, and she could probably sing whatever you throw at her, but the personal flair that each different voice and singer brings to the songs is what makes the magic imo. Judy khun gives me goosebumps and idina menzels power is just 😍😍😍

Disney songs are amazing because of the original singers. I can't imagine Jasmine and Mulan without Lea's voice. Thus each and everyone of the voices are treasures though it's always a joy to hear Lea's version. She's one phenomenal singer.

When I was in Grade 1, Lea Salonga is already in our book. That's why when I graduated college considering that we don't have tv, I thought she is already very old.
I never even thought that her voice quality before and now didn't change even with her current age.

Lea is my Top 1 favorite singer, but we don't have to compare her to others, or other singers with others singers. Each of them fits a certain character. I mean I would not gonna watch a show where all of characters would sound the same. There must be something distinct about them that people can easily identify.

I agree, Lea's version is incredibly great but the original just feels right. Lea always sing with emotion but Phil Collins original version was already full of it, he sung it with all passion. Anyway, both are great singers.

Lea has continually preached that the key to versatile singing is to always put emotion into the performances. If it comes from the heart, the song will feel right. Hence, she's the only singer to be cast as two different Disney princesses (Jasmine and Mulan). Being an award-winning musical actress, she has often said that she's not impressed at all by vocal gymnastics if they don't complement the singer's interpretation of the lyrics.

Leah's voice is cultured since she was young, but above all, she have the passion since she was little. and combine the two you get a perfect Disney Princess. to add to that, she is a perfectionist.
This only shows how versatile Lea is. Of course most of the people will prefer the original ones because we heard those versions first and we got used to it. Obviously there will be differences because they are unique in their own way.

I agree with many of you, some "originals" are still better than Lea, but that does not disses her amazing work, and the way she seems to play them. She´s so versatile.
I mean, the real reason why I like Lea Salonga so much is because her voice IS STILL AMAZING. Why? Because she has a proper technique and while I can love and like the original songs, maybe because I grew up with them, what makes me think so great about her is her capacity to keep her voice healthy while other singers can´t sing the way they used to.
That is the real reason I admire Lea. Not because she "can sing it better" OR MAYBE NOT, than anyone. But because she still has a voice to show us. How many other singers can do that for THAT LONG? Not many. Probably there´s some others that can do it too, but seriously, not MANY can keep their voice in such condition. *MIC DROP*

Lea always does the best version of every song she sings. Much respect to the composers and original singers who sang the featured songs.
Original versions are still the best. The level of nostalgia given is inevitable. The magic they bring to the song is just irreplaceable. Especially Cinderella’s song. That is just magical. Also, Lion King’s song, my childhood is right in that voice.

It's funny. I've always adored Lea's Disney work, but I've never been crazy about her musical (Broadway) work. Nevertheless, she has a fantastic voice! I've always admired her vocal skills.

This doesn't need to be a "battle" - people can appreciate the original compared to Lea's performances of these songs. The main point is that Lea is an amazing singer and sounds fantastic singing all these songs. FYI: there is also a very old video of Lea singing "Beauty and the Beast" (from the early 90s - not great quality) and "How Far I'll Go" from "Moana" (Lea is singing this on tour right now and it sounds so good).
I am 100% Lea Fanatic, and her voice is a gift, a supernatural one. however there is a reason why disney had they original sang the song because there's something in it the way they sang it.
Lea can sing any song with clarity, and that what's make her the Legendray, the Miss Saigon so need to compare Lea Salonga from the original.
Boths have talents, it's just Lea Salonga the Miss Saigon has the gift like an innate to sing a song full of heart.
Lea is one of my favorite singers but every singer really has their own masterpiece. All originals sounded better because they are as you said originals. Each song were supposed to be sung the way the originals sang it. No question about it. Lea's rendition is also good in her key. Just like what happened in searching for Kim's role in Miss Saigon. They have searched around the world and found Kim's voice in Lea. Hence, no need to compare.

Nothing beats the classic and the original. But still, Lea Salonga sings disney song too, and shes one of the best singer in the world.
Lea's clarity when Singing was very crystal clear, but I think it's not necessary to compare with each other they both did great.

I really enjoy this video and keep coming back to it. However I’ve said before - I don’t think it’s necessary to use “versus” and “won” when discussing Lea’s covers. They are Lea’s own versions of songs that people love (this is why people make covers). I would love for someone to do another video that doesn’t ask people to choose a winner AND includes “Beauty and the Beast” (there is a video of Lea in the 90s singing it solo) and Lea singing “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana in her tour last year.
Lea Salonga always say "sing from the heart & feel the music". Heard it many times when she's juding/coaching on The Voice Philippines and TVK Philippines. I love all the version and Lea's version and this shows how she love Disney and a great way to share her talent and respect to other singers.

She enunciates each word that you can even write the lyrics while she is singing it.
NICE CONCEPT BEAUTIFULLY EXECUTED :) I think I've already told you that I'm not a big fan of Lea Salonga Disney roles, but I think she nails live performances so hopefully I won't be biased against her. I do think, as some others, that her voice lacks some flavour (I remember that someone once said that she sounded like the most stereotypical blonde American princess without even being Caucasian), so I think I'll have to dislike the original to choose Lea over them.
That's the case of round 1 (I'm not a fan of this song and singer). I also prefer her on round 3, she sounds really involved and her emotions sound more natural than usual imo. I also like her quite a lot on round 4, she sounds strangely similar to Jodi, tho Jodi remains better for me ;)
I just love Ilene's, Elton's, Phil's and Judy's voices so much that I just couldn't choose Lea over them. About Michael Bolton, he has never been a favourite of mine either, but both him and Lea nailed this song (I wish she hadn't changed the melody so much though). Liz and Lea sound similar but Liz has more imperfections + a less generic voice so this time my preference is put on Liz. I'm not sure if I like Miley's or Lea's version of The Climb better, Miley has a more special voice but then Lea sounds more humble, and I like that on live performances. And it's no surprise that I dislike Idina's voice and I'm not a fan of her technique, so Lea owns the best LIG for me.
