People complain that the FIA are too inconsistant with the handing out of penalties. Now, people are complaining because Lando Norris got a 10 second stop/go penalty for not slowing under yellow, which is entirely consistant with how the FIA have issued the penalty in the past. It only goes to prove, you will never make F1 fans happy.
I think that F1 needs a Code 80 in the way that the WEC has Code 60. The drivers are told to put on the pit speed limiter in a sector, that means they're going slowly enough that the marshals can get out on track and clean up what needs to be cleaned up without too much risk, the race position is maintained, and the problem can be solved. The VSC and/or double waved yellows at the moment doesn't really slow the cars down enough for the marshals to work safely.
Verstappen tried to argue he never saw a set of yellows a few years ago but they penalised him anyway , when Hamilton was asked about it he had no sympathy as he himself had got hit with a penalty despite not seeing the double yellow They are just applying the same rules to Norris that got applied to Hamilton and Verstappen
The thing is in that race of Max you're mentioning, he just about to cross out from that section where they flown double yellows, and they were not shown on the board of the steering wheel, just a random steward waving flags off into the distance away from the turning direction. He got penalised. Sure go ahead FIA. But don't expect max to forget such things
@@thecompanioncube4211 Just like anyone with even a touch of morality won't forget Saudi 2021, the ending of 2021, this years incidents, Monza 2021 or any of the others "Max" moments Thing is when I bring that up it's not loved... I'm told "get over it" but if Max remembers a basic yellow flag mess up we can't expect him to forget such things. A fucking yellow flag fuck up that's happened to every driver, hardly like *they stole a Title from him* is it. He should do well to not criticise the people that *gifted* him his 1st and slapped on the wrist *costcap* pen for his second. He should also look at the rules and when fighting one on one he could do well to abide by them and not drive people off circuit because he's spoilt and didn't learn to drive in the junior formulas. So yeah pretty much fuck him and the horse/bull he rode in on for *ANY* complaint he has about stewards or the rules.
The intrigueing part, to me, was that apparently they were fine with that mirror lying on an active track, while it was whole and easy to pick up and remove. They only acted when it was already in pieces, cutting up tyres and being a bugger to sweep up. And being a hazard to life and limb, remember Massa getting that bolt in his eye. They could, and should, have cleared it off when it wasn't a hazard yet but an easy fix instead. If I acted like that I'd be out of a job. Completely unprofessional.
When there is a reason for a SC in sector 1 on lap 1, they still don’t let the field race into sector 3. Yet when there are actual shards of bodywork on the racing line they wait until someone gets damaged to pull the SC? Also, what happened to Norris isn’t even close to harsh. Going full throttle into and through a double yellow is worthy of black flag. It’s not about what the hazard was, but rather the principle of respecting that the track Marshall’s have declared that zone as dangerous. Drivers must respect this! Surely you to recall Hamilton (2020) receiving a 10 sec stop go at Monza for entering a closed pit-lane. Well it was closed because Marshall’s were dealing with an incident. Same principle as blasting into a yellow zone. The driver failed to respect or notice, and the only way to ensure Marshall’s will be protected is if Driver’s have punishment for disregarding the safety zone.
Thanks for being reasonable. Just because they got something wrong doesn't mean they got everything wrong. I didn't know the rule for the double yellows, so when I found out, I was really disappointed with the Channel 4 team reaction. They acted like the race direction were being extra harsh on Lando and made me think that as well, when they were correct on that occasion. There's enough negativity without people that should know best, contributing to it
I agree with you on the Lando Penalty (As a McLaren Fan). It was slam dunk he didn't lift and he should have done, however the Race Director Fucked up and should have called a VSC for the Mirror immediately and now the FIA are gonna try and Cover his arse because if they fire him they'll be no one left to be the race director for either F1 or F2. I suspect that the Drivers briefing for the race this weekend could be very spicy with some pissed off drivers due to the current situation.
Lando also had drs opened. Tunnel vision, focused only on Max's car. Will cost us WCC. He panics in critical situations, Oscar will be under pressure. If Lando qualifies behind Sainz , it's game over.
@@hipotenuza5663 I completely understand how it happened and I have sympathy for Lando as well he shouldn't have been put in that position by the race director who should have called a VSC. I think in the future he'll need to be better in situation racing but that's a lesson for him. If we lose the constructors because the FIA fucked up I'll be pissed off (however not as pissed off as Zack Brown). The whole race direction and stewarding this weekend was a clusterfuck.
@@nathanmcgowan5198the marshall fucked up debris on track is either a single yellow or the red & yellow, not DWY. DWYs didn't flash and were never recorded, but a marshall decided DWYs were appropriate when they weren't.
@@nathanmcgowan5198 I'll be pissed off same as Zak . Priority should have been scoring more points than Ferrari, instead of Lando fighting for p1. Last time was WCC in 1998 with my forever favourite McLaren driver Mika. He was also in Qatar ( in case of winning).
@@Ramtamtama completely agree, the race director has several options and DWY wasn't the right one. I think a VSC whilst the Marshalls went and retrieved the mirror would have been appropriate, however Lando does also have played the situation in front of him and he should have lifted. I do also think the penalty was harsh but unfortunately as written (not in spirit) the rules were applied.
These seasons are far too long. I can still recount most races from those 16-17 race seasons. Every race used to count for something, but now a third are throwaways that can't be remembered within the current season in which they occurred. And half of those we do remember are remembered for the wrong reason(s).
I have no problem with any of the penalties. They were all bang to rights & rules should be applied firmly at all times. But If rules are silly, they should be scrapped or re-written, never ignored. That should be done between seasons, not during one. The Race Director was appalling. Management of the on track debris was terrible & deploying the yellow flags was confusing. Not only that, but Hamilton's false start was only flagged up for investigation on lap 9. A replay I saw about an hour ago showed him moving very slightly while the lights were still red, but any movement earns a penalty. 9 laps to refer a false start is ridiculous though. Sensors detect this instantly. It should have been sent to them (& announced the teams/commentators) a lot faster. There is no reason why this cannot be done while they are still on the first lap. I have no issue with the stewards taking their time to determine it was a false start & issue a penalty. It should simply have been referred to them a lot faster.
It was like watching a race from the 90s. Drive throughs, stop/goes, safety cars for cars beached in gravel traps. It's almost like everyone involved in F1 has forgotten, or doesn't know, why all of those things were removed from the races
what I find intriguing is how the community reacts to Max’s outbursts towards his rivals compared to when Lando does it. If Lando said what Max said to Russell people would be going for his head, however what i’ve seen online (primarily TikTok & Twitter) it seems like a lot of fans are defending Max, interesting.
That's probably because you didn't understand what happened. It's okay to notice the race leader of any possible infringements of your fellow riders, anyone does that all the time. What Max hated about duplicitous Russell, is that he claimed in front of the camera's not to want a penalty for Max, and then behind doors fight to get a penalty.
I don't understand either. A reprimand would've been fine. Not sure what kind of +100 speech skill Russell did but it is what it is. I'm just too Fat1gued (see what I did there?) to bother at this point.
Reading the comments regarding FIA consistency reminds me to thank you for pointing out when the FIA gets it right as well as wrong. I don't have a good memory for the smaller points, and who got what penalty when and for what are things that I'll never be able to remember from week to week (or session to session, let's be honest). A lot of the time, I think, "That's unprecedented! That shouldn't have happened." I'm always happy to be proven wrong. Consistency is perhaps the biggest problem with FIA officiating, and I'm glad to know that it's not always as bad as I think it is at first.
For the record - the yellow flag was never removed while the mirror was there. The TV broadcast showed "green flag" and then never showed yellow flag poppin up but the marshal post always had a yellow flag out on this electronic board thingy the entire time.
@@AidanMillward I'm looking at all the onboards on F1 TV right now and not counting Hulkenberg and Lawson who were following Albon immediately, the first driver to pass the mirror was Magnussen without yellow flags. By that time Verstappen, Norris and Bottas came out of the final corner. When Verstappen reaches the mirror, the marshalls are waving double yellow. Then Nottis passed it without slowing down, followed by Bottas (who lifted). If there was a solid yellow between the mirror flying off and Norris reaching it for the first time, it would have been between Magnussen passing it and Verstappen reaching it, so for about 5 seconds maximum.
Eh, Marques was thrown under the bus with this (and the next race). He's been forced to effectively direct four races this weekend (F1 Academy, F2, the F1 Sprint and F1 Race), and he's got to do that in Abu Dhabi (though minus the sprint race). He's effectively doing the work of three people through the weekend. Him pushing the hardest penalties probably was him literally not giving a fuck regarding what would happen. If he's fired this week, then the FIA have to find a new race director in less than a week for Abu Dhabi. If they don't fire him, he knows he's probably leaving at the end of the season. Personally, it could be that we're seeing a public view of some potential conflict within the FIA against MBS and his decision making.
I was working my job on only a few hours' sleep while watching the race in the background (the only way to get through this s***show). My first thought when I saw the mirror on the track was "VSC." I'm not an experienced race director of any level series. It's not that hard.
Also note Hamiltons penalty (the second of them) was because he forgot to turn on his limiter, leading to him slamming the brakes on when he realised he was going too fast, leading to Lando claiming "he braked tested me"
I never expected Aidan to be eating a Jaffa cake .... Waoo that reminds me of another one of UK's youtuber group i had watched for god knows how long, - the Yogscast
Brasilian here. The translation to better safe than sorry would be something like "better to prevent than to medicate", in portuguese: "melhor prevenir do que remediar".
the "10 second stop go penalty" is a "guideline" not an absolute, therefore they can make a different choice of penalty, I do not understand why this is not being spoken about
Another thought if I may. I always understood that one of functions of the "Green Flag Lap" was also to show the drivers where the Flag Points are and thereafter they are deemed to have seen the Flags when they drive past so the excuse "I did not see the Flag" is invalid. However, in imposing a penalty the Official must take into account the position on track of the driver when the flag comes out.
With regards to the start, I think the rules state that any reaction quicker than 0.25s is a jump-start because the minimum time it takes for the human brain to register a light-change is 0.25s (simply registering, not taking into account the further fraction it takes to command the fingers to release the clutch). So if a driver moves in less time than 0.25s then they're anticipating the start and not reacting to it; which is a jump start.
A product of recent upheaval. The Race noted that there seemed to be an element of fear involved. It was getting to the crunch point of strategy and Lando was closing in on Max, and so it may appear that they didn't want to be accused of overreacting to 'a bit of debris' and have the 'oi, I was enjoying that!' and 'elfin' safety gone mad' * crowds hurling shit at them. But as the columnist pointed out, someone's always gonna be pissed off, safety is more important than excitement. As for the Landobot, he was the one that got me shouting 'what the hell are you thinking?'. He blasted through double yellows. WITHOUT LIFTING. Unacceptable. To be fair, he isn't even arguing that, telling the press "I fucked it up." One could make a drinking game - drink of rosewater, of course - out of the number of times reporters have said "More penalties than the World Cup Final." Good thing I'm not on socials. * gone mad got autocorrected to gonads there. Apt description for those who complain about such things in the Hailey Sail.
I can't agree, NASCAR had a race where 2 cars slowed down and wouldn't pass another car because it was the same manufacturer (Chevy) and manipulated the outcome...and NASCAR barely punished them! NASCAR also let a driver wreck 2 cars to win a race.
@Azeria yeah I guess being a former NASCAR fan I've been desensitized to shit shows it has to be really bad before I complain, bad officiating here and there is nothing I'm used to that!
according to the F1 community, not lifting would be the so called "killer spirit", where Lando would rather take a risk than slow down. we all know that this is simply just wrong.
@ArtucoDev You can thank Senna's famous quote being taken wildly out of context, especially the last few years when it is used as a means of justifying a bonehead move.
Another of my ideas for the benefit of F1 is to have a 3rd type of SC made available: An "LVSC": Simply put: "Limited Virtual Safety Car": The same as a VSC but instead of delta times, the Pit-Limiter must be activated in order to keep the cars at a constant speed. This would be ideal for the removal of large pieces of debris without screwing one or two drivers; which is what the RD was trying to avoid yesterday by not making a decision.
Glass half full: We have new directors this race. They are administering the rulebook as written. Even the arcane stuff that hasn't been enforced lately. If they're consistent, and if this is the new norm, that's good. You're supposed to do that. Then, when you see problems, you fix the rulebook. Too many people are screaming "this is different". Different is fine... If we're returning to a proper rule of law. Can we all get on board with that? This is okay, so long as we're consistent moving forward. And when we want it fixed. We do it before the race. Because once the drivers exit the briefing, they run to the book as it was at that moment. Barring massive unforseen safety issues cropping up. Obviously.
The problem is that no one with the power to make the call seemed to understand that the debris WAS on the racing line if you were trying to pass, breaking a toe, etc. Even if it’s not technically on what people usually mean by racing line (there are many different kinds depending on the situation) the stewards and race director should know enough to understand that the debris is exactly where many drivers will need to go and it’s not going to vanish, it’s going to shatter and make more debris from cars it hits and tires that puncture, early Kepler syndrome type stuff. They looked like idiots not because of the penalty, but because the FIA’s decisions, which they had many laps to think about, were so poor. They don’t even know why they should be embarrassed, which is even more embarrassing. Like one loose part breaking other parts loose, these types of clueless behavior will have effects on the teams and races.
i have no issue with the penalty - it was slam dunk dumb from lando - a proper iracing move- the pen may seem excessive but this is to send a message to the other drivers tht these flag mean something my issue is with how dumb it was to leave the debris on the track. that was the only overtaking spot on the track. if they left it there then it was always going to get hit. i think they were scared to thrown a VSC because it would have favored someone
They were clearing wing mirrors like this up under double yellows up until 2005 before any VSC. It is possible with a large gap in traffic especially with slower cars with the VSC. Its a wing mirror ffs. Its crazy and I feel old that everyone seems to be saying they should have pulled the SC and im in the minority when I say yellows were sufficient. I want yellows back tbh. How times have changed. Bianchi's accident changed things, many things such as tractors on track are good but a wing mirror should be cleared with double yellows or a VSC.
It just wouldn’t have been difficult to deploy the VSC, wait for a gap, and send a marshal out to grab it. Idk why the race director always makes these things look so difficult. And I hate when the excuse is that they don’t want to screw over some drivers with the VSC, that’s racing, thems the breaks. By not throwing it when it happens naturally, you’re actually manipulating the race. Something that IndyCar does all the time which drives me nuts.
One thing you can never accuse the FIA of is having a "big brain" anything, let alone a scheme! Re Verstappen's "penalty", the delta is NOT a definitive thing. It's a recommendation.
Another thing, it took them half an hour to review a cut and dry incident with a set penalty, and that half an hour included 2 safety car periods. If they'd have been on it then Lando would've served his penalty before the 1st safety car. And the positioning of the mirror, at the exit of the pits, means the pits should've been closed. Surely common sense should've prevailed. A circuit with 1 overtaking spot has the overtaking spot taken out of commission, so make it so it can be brought back into commission. And it shouldn't have been a DWY at that spot as there were no marshalls on the track, it should've been either a single yellow (hazard on track) or red & yellow (debris on track) flag. The marshall at that spot made the wrong decision and denied us what could've been an intense end to the Grand Prix.

I just want to know if the new RD was ever planning to clear the debris off the track before it was finally run over. Wittich was the first very good RD in ages, and I count Whiting in that. I know Wittich was good because I didn't know his name until he was fired.
The penalties were within the rules, they stuck to the letter of the rules, BUT they should have had a VSC or full safety car and gone through the pit lane sooner to allow the marshals to clear the debris from the track. I watched the highlights on Channel 4 (UK) last night, and watching the slow-mo replay it looked like Hamilton started moving a tiny bit before the lights went out, so that penalty was justified, as was the pit lane one. I did think that Stroll's one was a bit off though, didn't look like he had anywhere to go as it were. Hey ho, just my opinion.....
I don't get why they threw DOUBLE yellows for a piece of debris (why expect to slow down/expect to stop for a mirror off the racing line???) when drivers are JUST coming up on the zone. Max and Lando were in T14 when the mirror flew off Albon's car, and apparently there was some sort of timing indicator that there WAS a yellow. Timing tower was flipping between yellow and track clear, so what happened there??? Then they switched to a single/static yellow by the time Perez got there, until lap 32, then they removed the yellow entirely until Bottas hit it??? Doesn't make any sense.
I feel it's been a horrible season. FIA incompetence, Christian Horner, Social Media children crying bias at every decision. I've had enough and looking forward to the break.
14:52 And all it took was multiple people being fired But I didn't know MBS drove an F1 car. I knew him from his appearances in Colin McRae Dirt 2 & 3. Good times
Imo them not acting right away, and leaving the mirror out on track kinda screwed Haas' race, and gave Alpine yet another lucky break 🙄. Shame mag hadnt stayed out for a couple more laps 🫤. Once that full safety car came out he was never going to be able to get back to the position he was in prior.
Can they instruct cars to go through the pit lane under a VSC? Would have been the perfect solution to allow all debris be retrieved and not a full SC needed. Awkward but manageable
Stationary yellows are not used in FIA rules events. Waved and double waved only. The flags would have been displayed either on the reaction of the Flag Marshal on the spot, or on instructions of race control, whatever, once the flag is displayed race control will up or downgrade the flag as they see fit. Thus the continued double was the call of race control. Given the location of the mirror I cannot fathom why they didn’t Safety Car the race immediately. Very disappointed that Lando kept it pinned through a double waved… And in my view the punishment should be harsher.
NASCAR and F1 should swap stewards. The officiating probably wouldn't be much worse and at least then both series would have excuses for the INEXCUSABLE BULLSH*T they pull every single race.

Then, the drivers decide to make his 1st day on the job extra complicated, impeding each other, playing dodgems, littering, ignoring flags... I bet the report didn't come out after the race, not because they were trying to cover up, but because Marques was probably off to the pub as soon as the race finished.
I had to laugh at all the whining that came across the radio. Verstappen being a tattletale, Lewis being checked out but the greatest farewell from KMag after his overtake on Albon. That should have been a 10 second penalty under the language rules.
Sainz and Hamilton reported tire issues a before passing the debris from the broken mirror. The punctures were caused by the kerbs, not the broken mirror.
I wonder, just thinking aloud, if a drive through isn't the wrong kind of penalty. It means someone going through the pitlane, which is always a hazard. Especially when others might make regular stops, and you might deliver during a vsc or sc or something. Just... it doesn't feel right somehow. A 30s penalty could do the job just as well
VSC doesn't, and has never worked. Sure it 'neutralizes' the race, but you still can't put marshals or equipment on the track effectively. The FIA should just call the stewards from the Aussie Supercars. Supercars have the policies and procedures absolutely nailed down. The rules are clear and consistently enforced with a predictable procedure.
5:52 completely off topic: is that Ferrari sporting an Alfa Romeo logo? How did that happen? I know Enzo once started at Alfa, and it's a nice nostalgic touch, but was that the reason? Alfa is, was, its own constructor. Sort of.
Absolutely it should have been a stationary yellow. Therefore Norris wouldn't have needed to slow. They could have used waved yellows to allow a marshall to retrieve the part, however that's now something the FIA seem to want to do. As Scarborough said, they have GPS, prime a marshall, throw double waved, marshall runs out and retrieve then withdraw yellows
@@katierscott8771 yeah. And this thing about the field being spread out is bullshit. The field being spread under a VSC makes it EASIER to grab that mirror.
Exactly, I did Motorsport marshalling for a year, and no way would double waved have been used for that unless a marshall was actively on the track retrieving the debris. You were absolutely correct that the penalty was correct for the crime.. the problem is that the possibility for the crime to happen should not have happened.
How on earth can a double yellow represent a local red since as I understand it, a red flag requires cars to stop at the start line unless, that is, that once again the rules for F1 are different from those used in all other racing . In addition I well remember the time when their was no such thing as a Race Director who seems to have been thought up by the Fia or originally by Bernie Ecclestone so that he and Charlie Whiting could direct the race since that is what a Director does. In other words yet another level of Official was imposed upon the sport who controlled what the other Officials and the Stewards do. Since at that time I cannot remember such an additional Official being referred to in the Regs for any other form of race other than F1 The problem then was that almost all levels of racing called for a Race Director to be appointed who, in my opinion and experience as a Clerk of Course and an International Steward, would impose his will on the actions in Race Control such that the Stewards could only act when instructed to review and incident by the so called Race Director which in some instances delayed any action being taken. However, as we all know F1 has very little to do with actual Motor Sport and it is a great pity that what F1 does, can trickle down to real motor sport. Perhaps it is time that the Fia's role should be reconsidered especially as some ASNs tend to ignore them any way!
Bin Sulayem basically treats the drivers like they are 'slaves' or something - they should not have a mind of their own let alone defy their 'master'. But even if there's a 'coup' against him it will be quickly squashed by the smaller national federations (mainly those from Africa and Asia) who falsely belive that they finally are equal to the bigger federations or wanting to take down a peg the British and French as a revenge for their transgrssions diring the colonial years or something. For practically the same reason Gianni Infantino is bulletproof as president of FIFA (despite being no different than his predecessor Sepp Blatter) due to the support from nations from mainly Africa and Asia and in return for their loyalty get additional berths in FIFA's tournaments. The only way to get rid of him is to be forced to not go for re-election, because if he does, he'll win with the support of African and Asian sporting federations who see in him as the one who gives them 'voice'
Stuards used to be competent, and i don't remember having issues with the race director until Masi came up. What happened recently? Did all fall apart after Charlie died, or Mr President makes it worse? It's all over the place.

Every race used to count for something, but now a third are throwaways that can't be remembered within the current season in which they occurred. And half of those we do remember are remembered for the wrong reason(s).

I have no problem with any of the penalties. They were all bang to rights & rules should be applied firmly at all times.
But
If rules are silly, they should be scrapped or re-written, never ignored.
In the 90s if a car was beached in a gravel trap, it wasn't a SC.

@@TheBrummi10 it was solid yellow for a lap then went off, coming on again as a waved just as Lando passed it.

Personally, it could be that we're seeing a public view of some potential conflict within the FIA against MBS and his decision making.

the "10 second stop go penalty" is a "guideline" not an absolute, therefore they can make a different choice of penalty, I do not understand why this is not being spoken about
Another thought if I may. I always understood that one of functions of the "Green Flag Lap" was also to show the drivers where the Flag Points are and thereafter they are deemed to have seen the Flags when they drive past so the excuse "I did not see the Flag" is invalid. However, in imposing a penalty the Official must take into account the position on track of the driver when the flag comes out.
every time you refer to Jacques Villeneuve as the "french-canadian singer/songwriter" I chuckle 😁

As always great work - Jaffa cakes rock 🤘
i have no issue with the penalty - it was slam dunk dumb from lando - a proper iracing move- the pen may seem excessive but this is to send a message to the other drivers tht these flag mean something
my issue is with how dumb it was to leave the debris on the track. that was the only overtaking spot on the track. if they left it there then it was always going to get hit. i think they were scared to thrown a VSC because it would have favored someone
I'm positive that Alonso got a penalty a few years back for driving with a missing a mirror. Guess that doesn't apply to Albon because reasons.
Bianchi's accident changed things, many things such as tractors on track are good but a wing mirror should be cleared with double yellows or a VSC.
i know the drivers wheels have the 6 vertical leds for the flags do they not flash on the wheels whenever the flags are present ?
5:06 yes, in Brazil we say “Melhor prevenir do que remediar”.
"Better safe than sorry" does translate into portuguese: "Melhor prevenir do que remediar."

For practically the same reason Gianni Infantino is bulletproof as president of FIFA (despite being no different than his predecessor Sepp Blatter) due to the support from nations from mainly Africa and Asia and in return for their loyalty get additional berths in FIFA's tournaments. MBS has a vision for F1 and it's 20-22 drivers praising him never supporting any causes unless he himself backs them and generally not upsetting some of the places F1 visits as they have... laws which don't align with All Love is Love.
It's him being able to entangle in the sport itself and sometimes decide outcomes, essentially reality TV for Netflix, I realise Netflix got WWE, Shocked to see they control WWF1 now too.
And now he even goes after the team he was hugging on stage in 2022 after telling the world he would never punish them severely and that he drove for them
*Swearing has got to go now* ! Which even I as the biggest Max hater on planet earth find completely unfair.
*If you ban swearing you are halving Max's vocabulary ffs* !
No wonder he went all monotone and answered in one word answers.
I'm sure it's all Johnny Herbert's fault
"melhor previnir do que remediar" = better safe than sorry....wait was the race director Portuguese or Brazilian or something?
He’s Portuguese. I had to Google it the other day.
Bret screwed Bret 😭
