1:45 It absolutely does support split-screen co-op in the campaign, it even says so in the info text when selecting campaign; you just need to press start on a second controller on the join campaign screen, or at any time during gameplay.
It’s almost criminal that these games weren’t released as backwards compatibility. All of the Microsoft studio games… brute force, Mechassault and bloodwake, etc. They would look amazing on series X!
Thank you for bringing this game to light! You have no idea how many times I've tried to get this game on my PC (I could never find the right game file) I have not played it since I was a kid and I've always wanted to relive this game again thanks for giving this game the appreciation it deserves
In a lot ways, this is a proto-Mass Effect. It feels so like it, but more grimier, more self aware action flick. More 2000's edge lord, haha. It's ME without the shiny tech and bright blue everywhere. And it plays like it too. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if this was early inspiration for ME and maybe we never knew.
THIS is the video I’ve been looking for about this game, thank you. I loved this game so much when I was younger, my younger brother and I played it on our older brothers Xbox when he was out of the house.
I definitely recommend the paperback book for this game brute force… For this game, I particularly liked the graphics, characters, and voice acting probably more than the gameplay. But still a stellar game!
My cousin and I greatly appreciated the game when we rented it from a rental store called Hastings. I loved Tex as I grew up watching action flicks, and my cousin loved Brutus and Flint. The game is so obscure from my social group. I turned the campaign of Brute Force into my homebrew D&D campaign. The players loved defeating Shadoon.
0:18 Is it me or does the intro trailer of the game show things that are not in the game like you see the characters in a temple, there is a woman hanging from a roof I never find that in the game.
me, my brother and my dad used to spend hours during the summer playing this game! i wish games like this would get revamped. it would be sick with today’s graphics.
Ferguson base is a nothing area, I assume it was intended to be an optional objective or something but it was cut out. The super soldiers are not invincible, they are just very VERY bullet spongy, best just use hawk in stealth to cut them down, hide behind shack at the end to recover and use mines and grenades to take out the two turrets. But there is nothing there, shack doesn't open (I recall some people in old forum posts claim it did for them but most didn't), and nothing happens. Turrets would glitch and fall over sometimes and a wall wasn't placed on the ground correctly, think it was just unfinished.
I managed to glitch into the back of Ferguson base, I have a video on some channel somewhere. There is absolutely nothing within the base - just hills. You can glitch through the map once inside which "deletes" your character. When your squad dies and you re-spawn at the checkpoint the character who fell wont appear and your controls lock.
Next to Halo CE, this was my childhood. I cannot tell you how many times I replayed this game as a kid, both by myself, my friends and later my brothers. One of the best games I've ever played, and it's a damn shame I can't play this with buddies across the country. And I still own a disc copy. Never getting rid of it.
Thanks for your impassioned look at the textures and bump mapping. It is tempting to feel like the only one who would be noticing this stuff. EVen Halo 1's graphics are underrated by many.
I always loved playing as Brutus on this game…. He was my favorite character, I wished they put this on the backwards compatibility, imagine just how many people would play this game. It would have been glorious
My brother bought an xbox that came with this game and midtown madness 3, unfortunately it was the only two games we'd ever own on xbox because we mostly used our ps2, but we spent a lot of time playing this game and it was such a phenomenal game for its time. It was unlike anything else we played back then
I think Halo 2 might have been the first console game whose graphics and style really shocked me and made me feel like I was seeing the future of gaming. That game has no right to be that amazing in basically every way
One of the most fun I've had with a video game (co-op). Very very underappreciated. The game still looks good in my opinion. 25:47 even has depth of field wow
This game is like the summation and distillation of great 90s action schlock in a sci-fi package, and it was also an early pioneer of this genre and gameplay loop, although yeh there's earlier stuff like this too of course. But we still have many games today that are basically this game: Just Cause Series, Far Cry, Crysis, Sniper Elite. So basically, " GunMan in big open area runs around looking for bad men to kill. Occasionally find clustered BadMen, sometimes in camps or with special perks, etc. Slowly work through big area by going through small areas while still in big area." Except because the areas are too big, the games assets are very mid and everything is too far apart and there's not enough content and too much reused content and it just looks generic. But there's always a few games every generation that try to push the envelope too much and eventually get to the "Empty game" problem. Where you have the most amazing looking giant world ever with so many billions of people and buildings and whatever, and then they didn't have enough time to make a game that works with a world that big
I think that i would love to see a remake or a new game of brute force with the gameplay of gears of war while keeping the special abilities of the 4 characters. While Gears of War is on Sera, the new brute force would be in space visiting different planets. The possibility of having a lot of different weapon would make it interesting. Just imagining Brutus hiding behind something and using his heat vision to see where are the others ennemies would be cool. And adding more characters to team. Hope for The Coalition to buy the game rights.
I play this game right through at least once or twice a year, it really is a fun little unique game from a bygone era it has that early 2000's jank that makes it quite quirky and nostalgic too me while not perfect at all it would be nice too see a re release or re imaging its a intresting premis a 3rd person fps where you can control 4 unique characters on the fly not many games come too mind that fit that nesh it really coukd have potential if someome where too pick up the IP and fiddle around with things and smooth it out into a great game... ahh a man can dream lol
Aside from the campaign; is there any more single player content? Like bot battles and all? (Didnt grow up with an XBOX but knew of this game; wishing it came to PC)
I'm afraid to say that I think the over sharpening actually kinda ruined the look of the game for me haha; the way this looked on CRT made much more sense. The've clearly made this with the limitations of CRT in mind, and so they relied on CRTS to better at depicting some things better than others, in order to hide unimportant details in the CRT
Hey mate what xemu settings are you using? struggling to get my brute force to load after the first mission? seems to be a common problem on the latest xemu build
This was a very under-rated game sadly. If I remember correctly, gaming magazines had much more influence back then than they do today, thankfully. These were the days before Steam or beta previews, most gamers would wait for the reviews to come out then decide if it was worth the $59 or not. This title was believed to be the "Halo killer" for the 2003 season but it never should have been compared to Halo at all, as BF was a tactical, squad based game more akin to Full Spectrum Warrior or Gears of War than an FPS. The gaming house that made this (Digital Anvil) was very, very small, with almost no budget. You can tell by the sparse credits. It was a sheer miracle this game was ever made. They were dissolved after the release of Brute Force, a victim of bad reviews from "critics" that really had no idea what they were doing.
What I find strange about the reception of this game is that those who only have negative things to say don’t really ever get specific. They either just say something generically negative like “It was a wet fart.” or something that is potentially worth criticising, but doesn’t necessarily make something bad like “It was meant to be a Halo killer.” The most specific negative thing I saw said about it was “It needs more epic battles like Call of Duty.” But these are comments I only ever saw on Reddit and GameFAQ forums. Whenever I ask someone in person they either never heard of it or they say it was pretty fun. I even see people using the bizarre out of 10 rating system where if it’s not 8/10 or above, it’s garbage. I saw someone say it wasn’t good and gave it a 7.5/10. Ignoring the bizarre Reddit critiques, it seems to be one of those games is seen as either decent or garbage. An acquired taste. I personally would like to see a revival of this IP. Capitalise on the potential this game and IP had.
I see only comments say "Tex had a lame special ability". You obviously never had someone dual wield Sweeper V's or Rail CLVR's and LVRs. Have fun dealing with that shit.
I remember this game existed every few years. Sniper was my favorite. I wondered why no one talks about it and, apparently, theres not really any way to play this these days, unless you still have it from back in the day. Edit: a /legit/ way. Normies dont generally go for emulators, but might dabble in backwards compatibility and such.
Thanks for showing us this. I wish it was backwards compatiable, and it's not in the Xbox store anymore. I wish they'd remake it, because I never got to finish it. SUBBING. Do you show how to setup Xemu? And, is it easy to get ROMs for this and some other good games? I used to love Brute Force and Hunter: The Reckoning. Both awesome games along with Azurik.
There's a link in the description that goes over Xemu setup and how to run Xbox games. I'm really hoping one day to see these games on Steam with proper remasters though.
I remember playing the entire campaign with my brother and occasional friends, so it does have split-screen up to 4. Maybe the European version didn't have split-screen?
What's so phucked up, is this game not only was epic but it came out on the beast console, so surely you'd have though many people had played it and thus loved it. But weirdly I've asked so many people who don't even know what the game is lol, who were Xbox lovers. So weird. Dunno where people were when this game came out! This explains why it is underrated though lol!
I always wanted to play this game back then but I ended up forgetting about it till I saw someone mentioned it & showed a picture of the game few moments ago so I kind of look it up just to see what it would have been like. I would have enjoyed this game, I wouldn't mind if they do a remake of it as I'd play it, I can never find myself going back to playing old games because of the graphics as well as newer games are just better in every aspect take Assassin's Creed Black flag when it came out it was my favorite one but after Syndicate I couldn't go back to playing it.
Bump mapping is amazing, do they still use it in Todays games, or is it different technique? This game literally look like a low polygon current or last gen game.
No one really talks about it that much. I remember it was decently popular back in the day but when talking about retro classics like Xbox no one seems to mention Brute Force that much.
1:45 It absolutely does support split-screen co-op in the campaign, it even says so in the info text when selecting campaign; you just need to press start on a second controller on the join campaign screen, or at any time during gameplay.
It was the only way I ever played 😂
I remember playing this game with my sister split screen
Yep, good times playing co-op with my brother
Yeah, I stopped watching the video after that. How do you miss best feature of the game...
It’s almost criminal that these games weren’t released as backwards compatibility. All of the Microsoft studio games… brute force, Mechassault and bloodwake, etc. They would look amazing on series X!
Yes, also Azurik. I loved that damn game.
And, Hunter: the Reckoning. Very good game too.
Can't forget Conkers Live & Reloaded and bad fur day.
@@-Bowen-That works on my xbox 360.
Really?
My dad bought a Xbox just to play this game with me. Is my fav game ever, I remember play it since 5yo.
WOW, thank you for bringing this game to light. This is one of my all time favourite games. So many amazing memories.
Another game on Xbox that I thought was extremely underrated was "full spectrum warrior". I would love a remake of those games!
This is the one game I always look for on the store every now and then, one of my favourites as a kid, 20 years gone so quick
Bro id kill for this game just to be backwards compatible
that was the good old days😢 I love this game.
We are gaming OGs, I played it when it came out too. Rented it from Blockbuster
@@WatermelonJikisame. Skipped school to play It with my aunt
Same
Split screen on this existed and was so fun. When you had less players than controllers, they’d give you a free marine
Thank you for bringing this game to light! You have no idea how many times I've tried to get this game on my PC (I could never find the right game file) I have not played it since I was a kid and I've always wanted to relive this game again thanks for giving this game the appreciation it deserves
I was under 10 playing this and never finished it. But itll always be that game i never forget.
One of the greatest games of all time easily. Put thousands of hours into this game casually lol
loved this game as split screen co-op.
In a lot ways, this is a proto-Mass Effect. It feels so like it, but more grimier, more self aware action flick. More 2000's edge lord, haha. This needs to be remastered
I miss this game, brutis is the goat lol
THIS is the video I’ve been looking for about this game, thank you. I loved this game so much when I was younger, my younger brother and I played it on our older brothers Xbox when he was out of the house.
I think this game atleast deserves to be HD Remastered.
Happy 20th anniversary of original xbox game Brute Force.
underrated masterpiece
This is the first game I ever played through entirely. Brings me right back to childhood.
I definitely recommend the paperback book for this game brute force…
For this game, I particularly liked the graphics, characters, and voice acting probably more than the gameplay. But still a stellar game!

Good spot - it was probably made in an earlier stage of development; I imagine they had to remove that bit due to ratings issues
Man this brings me back!
At 26:18 “They killed Kenny! I’ll get those punks.” Is that a nod to South Park?
me, my brother and my dad used to spend hours during the summer playing this game! i wish games like this would get revamped. it would be sick with today’s graphics.
I'm hoping Nightdive make a remaster!

me and brother pick up this game again yesterday, had fun doing splitscreen campaign

Brute Force doing what many L4D clones are doing now days, before it was cool

This was my game! Then I graduated to gears of war
Brute Force was packaged in the Beast Pack along with Midtown Madness 3.
This was my childhood , loved this game
Omg i was obsessed with this when i was a kid!
You can definitely play co-op campaign. My sister & I would play it all the time growing up
i played all the way through this game at least twice! they should make a sequel
Also with Brutus' ability, you can charge into enemies killing them instantly, but it depletes your energy bar.
That's awesome, I'll have to try that next time I play
They should put this on game pass or remaster or remake it
This was my childhood!
Check out the later parts and there's a part 5 coming Thursday! Nearly at the end of the game now

Never played this one as a kid saw it though
This game and Republic command deserve remasters
Always played as brutus cuz I was into dinosaurs and the predator when I was a kid
I absolutely love this game 😢
You're good damn right it's an underrated classic
I put a forum on nightdives discord server for this game, should def give this game some love!
Me and my mates use to verse each other and we would set up our guys in order to try and out maneuver each other. Was really fun.
Wow this game looks awesome

We played the campaign on solitscreen when this first came out. Don't know why you'd have a problem doing it nowadays.
Hey mate what xemu settings are you using? struggling to get my brute force to load after the first mission? seems to be a common problem on the latest xemu build

Any games similar to this game out now on ps5???

9:17 Sure, halo invented radars and reticles.

A Nightdive remaster for all platforms would be incredible to get the game back out there
I always tried so hard to keep the other uncharacterised soldiers alive

Yeah I somehow totally missed it, it does support local 4 player
This should be remastered or remade on the new system with online play
Did you have a brute force disk? Or did you download it from somewhere?
Un des jeux que je joue encore aujourd'hui, j'ai du le terminer plusieurs dizaines de fois. j'aurais tellement voulu un brute force 2 😁😔

my brother bought a modded xbox just to play this game, and now i play it more than him. I used to play this when i was like 7-8 now i’m 22 😂😂
I guess you would say hawk is your favorite character right 😂
And to think that thought that these graphics were out of this world….
Good old fashioned shootin lizards in a barrel. Games these days make shit too complex. I'm here for action.
I always wanted to play this game back then but I ended up forgetting about it till I saw someone mentioned it & showed a picture of the game few moments ago so I kind of look it up just to see what it would have been like. I think it's still used now although it will be full normal mapping now and most likely as part of modern physically based rendering pipelines.
Holy shit this brings me back 2 years after high school I played tge f out of this game!!!!!!!
Epic!
I mean, at the very least, this could've been a good HD remastered Switch port...
TOOO LONG BUT I STILL KNOW SOMEone like
Flint and Hawk rest i forget ^^
It was a awesome game
Nostalgia is cool
And all but this game was plagued by invisible walls and other glitches. It had potential
What do you mean "underrated?" That was played to death.
No one really talks about it that much. I remember it was decently popular back in the day but when talking about retro classics like Xbox no one seems to mention Brute Force that much.
Hmm yes, lovely bumpmapped sandbags all black & greyish nothingness, mmmmm
I’m pretty sure I had this game is a demo disc from mechassault two
