That turned out great! I love the Daniel Smith granulating colors and really like them on hot press paper. At first I was skeptical about using hot press for them because I thought I needed the 'tooth' of the cold press for the granulation to hold onto. But that isn't quite true. While they do look good on cold press, i love the dreamy effect you can get with hot press, which really shines in your sky. Very nice!
I love, love the turquoise too. It's so gorgeous within the browns/yellows and cream blend. Thank you so much for a most enjoyable and informative video.
This painting is beautiful Jean. I love the tip on how to keep the eye in the painting by dipping up with the landscape. I must try some oxide colors :).
Thank you, Jean. I have never been a fan of granulating paints but you are very convincing and now have inspired me to use them to my advantage. Gorgeous little painting!
I love the color combo you picked for this example. I have ordered a tube of the blue apatite and can’t wait to try it out in my landscapes. Thank you for the inspiration.
OMG, this painting made my heart soooo happy! I love granulating colors and I find watching the colors mix together very mediative, it's my favorite part about watercolor. Thank you so much for your awesome tutorials, I am extremely motivated to purchase these colors and work with them.
Absolutely beautiful Jean. I have done three paintings from your teaching this week and love them. I am sorting out my granulating paints and find I have quite a few Daniel Smiths. Want to et some of that gorgeous green appetite genuine. Wow that is fantastic. I am working my way through all your videos. You are fantastic and a terrific teacher. Thank you so much.
Wow! What a great piece. And your end comments were just what i was thinking - bigger main tree and more vegetation on the slope. Love, lovr, love how you share your thought process and experimentation as you paint. You are a real treasure in this sea (won't say swamp) of watercolor videos.
Lovely painting. Am paintless at the mo as looking after my mum with a broken shoulder. Your videos keep me happy. Can't wait to play with the Daniel Smith colours. Thanks for your inspiration.
What a wonderful and imaginative painting, Jean Lurssen. I just 'met' you for the 1st time today and I' m so happy I came across your videos and FB page. Thank you for sharing your talents with us!
This is the perfect video that I was looking for. I wanted to paint the landscape with granulating paint so I ordered it(It's on the way). I wanted to see how it reacts differently than the paints that I have. Because I notice some of the heavy pigment show that effect. I have a single pigment cobalt Turquoise Hue(PB28) it makes that effect beautifully too. I didn't know transparent yellow ochre does that too. I should try that. Thank you for sharing.
I absolutely love all these colors too. Every painting you do is drawing me to buy more paint. I'm a little bit confused the yellow oxide link pulls up red oxide. Just thought I'd let you know. I wish I could take a class from you.
I always love your tutorials. This is one of my favorites. You didn’t need to use a granulating medium to achieve this look. I will need to try these colors. Thank you!!
Very lovely! Try to hold your sample pieces still when you are trying to show us them. They kept moving as you spoke. I love these granulating paints and own several colors myself!
Very beautiful! I tried only one abstract watercolor on my channel but I wasn't very happy about it. I think I'm going to do the inktober challenge with one abstract watercolor a day, maybe this way I'll improve ^^
@@JeanLurssen I'm sorry about that messed up wording. LOL. I was probably half a sleep. Thank you for responding. I love your landscapes!! I try them alot. It's fun to recreate.
I love this painting, but I am not getting the level of granulation desired even though I am using the same paints, mixing thick and spritzing. 1st try was on 140 lb cotton hot press, 2nd try was on 140 lb cotton cold press, 3rd try was on 300 lb cotton cold press. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Maybe I should have tested techniques on small pieces of paper to see what would have given me a better result. I ended up adding transparent red oxide to my 3rd paiting to produce more color depth.
@@JeanLurssen Thank you for replying. Your painting looked gorgeous. I just wondered what technique you would use? I think you mentioned adding white earlier along in the video.
This is extraordinary. How can I know which colours will granulate and which won’t? (I can’t afford Daniel Smith watercolours - but I have cheaper variants.)
I would swatch the ones you have to see if they granulate or not. You can also purchase 'granulation medium' which I think you can mix with non granulating paints to help them granulate.
Akash Goenka - I would save up for Daniel Smith Primateks. They granulate like no other paint because they are made from real minerals. I would try to save and just get one at a time. That’s how I’ve acquired my collection. Good luck!
I have had success with this tape - amzn.to/3y5Bdzr One has to be careful with any tape when removing from the paper. Remove slowly and away from the paper.
beautiful painting! if I can ask, how did you do the white bushes on the bottom of one of those small paintings? Did you just remove the paint while it was still wet with something or is it painted on top of already dried paint? Thanks :)
I'm just curious how long your paint brushes last. For some reason I wear off the tip of mine. I think I'm scrubbing or not painting with the brush properly. Do you have any tips on that?
Hi Roberta. It really depends on what type of art you want to pursue. Some artists like bright colors and others prefer the more muted hues. I would suggest you checkout different artist's work and decide which appeals to you, only then will you know what basic colors to start with. With the three primary colors you can mix just about any color, so I wouldn't start by buying a lot of paints. You could try a few different primaries to see what appeals to you. Be sure to get artist quality paints if you want good results. Never skimp on quality paints or paper. Buy only 100% cotton watercolor paper for best results. My work horse colors are still Winsor & Newton raw sienna, burnt sienna, Payne's grey, Indigo, French ultramarine, sap green, Indian yellow and lemon yellow. I also love the Daniel Smith line and use a numbe of their colors too.
It's granulating colors. They are colors made from minerals that separate when adding water or granulation medium and create textures when the mineral grains appear on the page.
quelle chance d'avoir des artistes qui partagent leur savoir et leurs techniques avec une telle générosité !

My kind of painting .The granulation is stunning
Beautiful. I could watch you painting for hours. So satisfying 🫶🙏
Your "thinking out loud" narrative is so helpful. I am excited to start in this style!
I love the turquoise. It provides great counterbalance to the oxides.
Interesting. Thanks.
That was fun to see how granulating paints move.
Beautiful granulation of colors. I just love the painting. Thanks for the demonstration.
Beautiful demo. Thanks!
I really love the colours in this one
So lovely. You captured colors after the rainstorms in the desert!
I love, love the turquoise too. It's so gorgeous within the browns/yellows and cream blend. Thank you so much for a most enjoyable and informative video.
This is breathtaking! Love the painting! ❤
The grained watercolor gives a natural and good representation of the desert. I learned an idea.
Thank you very much for posting a good video
Your commentary is so helpful, seeing things from the artist’s perspective
I love that you're now painting larger pieces and I just know I'm going to have to order these colors now! Thanks for much Jean!!
I'm in love with your style of watercolor!
I LOVE the colors and the little trees! Just beautiful!!

yvonne geelen is granulating just really watered down colors?
sharon mcmann-morelli no granulating watercolours are different I don’t think they are ground so fine

Exactly - granulation without granulation medium.
Wow! It is gorgeous.
Beautiful work ❤️
The colors work together great! It looks really good! :)

Stunning!! Would come press water work just as good, or you you recommend hot press for these granulating landscapes?
They are supposed to work better on cold pressed paper. I just prefer painting on hot pressed paper.
@@JeanLurssen I'm sorry about that messed up wording. LOL. I was probably half a sleep. Thank you for responding. I love your landscapes!! I try them alot. It's fun to recreate.

This is great! Is it possible to obtain such effect with granulating medium ? And how do we use it?
Mix the granulation medium with watercolor.

This looks very much like rockcuts to me-a cross-section of landscape.
Very interesting!
Are you using the granulating medium in the spray bottle? Or is it water in the bottle? Thank you for your lovely demo.
It's just water.
Lovely. I am really interested to see 'the repair'. Did you 'fix' the bleed into the sky?
I didn't really need to Fiona. The trees covered the area quite well.
@@JeanLurssen Thank you for replying. Your painting looked gorgeous. I just wondered what technique you would use? I think you mentioned adding white earlier along in the video.
@@fionaross-scott5613 I would have used Dr. PH Martin's bleed proof white to fix the color overlap. Hope this helps.

Anyone else seeing a benevolent pussycat looking down from the sky? 🐱
Hi Jean, what sort of marsking tape comes away from the paper without tearing it, cheers grant

I'm just curious how long your paint brushes last. For some reason I wear off the tip of mine. I think I'm scrubbing or not painting with the brush properly. Do you have any tips on that?
I guess it depends on how heavy you are with them and the quality of the brush.
Jean, your list of paints use shows Blue Apetite Genuine but you talk about turquoise. Which paint have you used in this video?
Just realized I forgot to list that one Have added it now under the video. Thanks for letting me know.
That’s gorgeous! Do you use a mat to predetermine the painting area?
No I don't. That would restrict my painting somewhat. I only add a mat after I'm done.
I am surprised that you prefer hot press paper. Wouldn’t cold press produce more texture in paintings?
For me the granulation works better on hot pressed. Don't know if others experience something different.
Jean Lurssen I will have to try hot press with your method. I have tried it on cold press and have a few pictures that I like.
What paint colors for beginners do you suggest?
