It's remarkable how lifelike it is. He did a beautiful job. It's amazing that this series is not getting much attention from other reviewers, well I have three more lined up and then I might go back to the few I missed! I love them. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Love this album. We have the Verve Master Edition 20-bit CD that came out in the mid-90's which sounds just incredible, as do other ones from that series. Your review however has me considering buying this new AP vinyl cut. What a great shootout that would be. Thanks for the excellent review as usual!
I'd love to do that kind of review but for now there is no CD playback in the system. So I can't tell you for sure, but I can say this is one of those releases that make analog vinyl playback worthwhile!
I'll let you know if and when that happens. For now, I did buy a couple LP's thru your Amazon link that I've wanted. Thanks for mentioning your affiliation. Blues a Plenty and Remain in Light on the way to me!
@@michaelhawk4964Thank you Michael! I really appreciate your patronage at the storefront. Wait til you see the jacket of Blues A Plenty. Absolutely gorgeous. So is the pressing and the music. Will be reviewing it when I return from vacation. Remain in Light is a classic and is an excellent cut. I had planned a shootout of Remain in Light but haven't gotten to it yet.
Thanks for the heads up. Led me to spinning my 2012 George Marino/Sterling remaster 45 cut and I am stunned by both the music and sound. (I do have the Side by Side Classic Records 33 and it is a great listen, too) Have a grand day!
Hi Thomas, I'm sure the Marino 45 is wonderful - I haven't heard one that isn't superb. If you're ever feeling you'd like a 33, I think this is it! Jacket and disc are flawless too. Thanks for watching! It's great to hear from you!
I loved Night Train but haven't reviewed it yet. Sonny Stitt will get a rave review. I heard it a couple of times right before I left for vacation and it sounded amazing on the new front end. Musically it was just wonderful.
Thanks for this video Scott, right up my street as most of my jazz collection is Ellingtonia. Back to Back is wonderful and it’s no surprise that most of JH small band Verve releases from this period are still in demand. The mystery for me is why has JH plays the prettiest Gershwin never been re-released, maybe the tapes are lost? EMI in the UK did a glorious job pressing the JH albums in mono on the Verve series and are one of my most cherished sections of my collection. I strongly recommend these versions as an alternative to the rereleases to any interested UK collectors. Fairly affordable too possibly as JH not cool enough to demand big money?
Great to hear from you! Perhaps so, as he doesn't have the attention of the general public, like, say Miles Davis or John Coltrane. That's great that you can still find them at a reasonable price. I love this particular period in Verve history. What a great series this is. Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge in the subject!
@@ThePressingMatters Thanks I’m really looking forward to hearing your impressions of the Stereo version of Blues a Plenty which is my absolute favourite of my Hodges monos. I’ve heard the stereo version of the Hodges/Strayhorn Orchestra verve album which is markedly inferior to mono.
I have yet to buy any from this series that I thought were stinkers! This one is no exception. I also have the Sonny Stitt but haven’t had an opportunity to listen to it yet. Thanks for the review!
I've followed it from the beginning and while some of the Impulse titles included in the series were musically challenging, the Verve stuff has really captivated me! I'm very excited for more gems from this catalog. Beautiful!
Yes, Basin Street Blues is the tune I use to practice stripping. I'm still looking for good music to use when I stain or shellac. Seriously, congrats that you're hearing more with the new analog setup.
Yup as soon as you hear it, you'll recognize that slinky, take it all off vibe! Great sounds coming from the system overhaul, particularly the last two changes, the System Audio Pandion 30 speakers and the VPI Scout. I'll be doing a third follow up on the VPI and ADS to complete the series and give some final thoughts on it. Thanks for watching!
Yes! Definitely stream it one night and see what you think. I'm sure there are good cd versions of it as well. I wouldn't bother with originals, and I wouldn't pay more than the retail of this for any other version. This is perfect audio playback. Your system will love it.
Thank you! Although u haven't heard every Marino 45, those I have have been beautiful. This might be it equal and it's a pleasure to own it in this format, looking and sounding perfect.
I agree, I’ve bought this. Bad news from the last video, my “mint” copy arrived, a pile of Pooh. The only part mint is the cover, one side has a deep cut right across a complete track. This is a Discogs dealer with a 100% rating. In other news after purchasing your Heifetz recommendation and loving it, I’ve now fortunately been able to add, 2 Decca Gold genuine mint originals, the only ones I could see in the U.K., two of the AP releases and last week a mint 6 album boxed set on RCA Red Seal of his chamber music. So I now have six of his titles. We clearly have similar tastes.
Im glad you picked up this record, it's such a beauty. I'm so sorry about your experience with Discogs. This kind of situation is why I rarely buy used over the internet. I'd be furious. I hope he resolves the situation. I assume you are talking about the Michael Hedges record. I hope you can get a great copy eventually. Regarding Heifetz, great news there!

Just got this yesterday and listening to it now. wow!
Bernie is a genius!

I have an og of this fantastic album 👍
Great review Scott as usual! I’d overlooked this title but you’ve convinced me to grab one
Hi Brad!
You can't lose with this one! Let me know what you think once you've given it a spin. Take care man.

Bought Night Train too. Sounds great.
Bought Sonny Stitt anticipating a great review.
Haven’t listened to it yet.
Thanks for the recommendation

Very descriptive review as always, Scott and makes me want to go out and grab a copy, or at least get some version of it, even on CD.

I have the 45 rpm by G Marino, how does it compare to the BG 33 rpm? Great reviews as always!

I also already have the two you showed at the end, interesting we get them in the U.K. before you do.
Those two are just as good aren't they! What a great run they are having lately..
