Great video man! Your channel was suggested to me the other day and I’ve been going thru learning tons by watching your vids. Your channel is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I play for a hour or two each day so I’m definitely just a casual PvPer but I got to a point, back when MAG was still the arena, where I found myself winning way more than losing. My internet provider ended up having some issues so my speed got significantly dropped up until the other week so I stopped playing for awhile…just the thought of making someone fight me with my piss poor connection turned me off. But I got back to 1v1s and man, you’d think I never did PvP before in these games the way I’m losing lol. Kinda discouraging in a way, but your vids and a lot of really close fun loses make me want to not just get to the level I was playing at before, but even better. @@Rust_BKT the small window of time when holding sprint, releasing ends in a delayed roll. I'm not sure if it has a name, but after seeing this video, it made me wonder if it can be explored more
Just fyi "Priority" as it applies to fighting games is a vestigial term that vaguely tried to describe why counter hits would take place (not counter thrust damage but hitting the opponent in the startup of an attack.) or why an interaction that was some combination of frame data and hitboxes would occur. It also was used in a small number of games to describe a mechanic where if two buttons would hit on the same frame, instead of trading, a button denoted as higher strength would win. IE mediums beating lights, heavies beating mediums. I understand Fromsoft players don't use the terms in the same way but it is trying to describe similar things and I think it needs to be delineated even more from the current vocabulary and ultimately divested from in favor of more precise language.
I feel like im understanding what youre saying and i will think we mean the same thing here. I wasnt refering to priority as counterdamage, but rather as who governs the aggression in the fight based on having sufficient poise damage and the frame advantage to continue to press the attack without risking a trade. In the scenario i brought up toward the end, where HTS did jr2, which was rolled, scythe had priority out of the roll because the hts does insufficent poise damage to maintain its advantage after a trade, so its forced to react to the scythe. Basically, the hts can take the trade, but its immediately in disadvantage afterwards, giving scythe priority. I hope im understanding this right, please correct me if im still using the term priority differently, maybe theres a better word i should be using
@@Rust_BKT So generally speaking if this was a fighting game they would have frame advantage but this concept is a little tougher when you talk about whiffing an attack though in a world where latency wasn't a factor it would still apply. Smash calls it "advantage" generally but I'm less enamoured with that though it might be more apt here. (On hit in the case of the scythe it is just frame advantage in general) I don't mean to deride this is super helpful in general I just personally find it hard to bridge the gap in language and figured I'd offer my thoughts.
@@FadedVIsage naw i appreciate it. Im aware that alot of the language has flexible interpretation, including things like “wavedashing” which generally means something different in other games. But the more accessible the information is, the better, and using good language helps a lot
@@Rust_BKT i dont think you can negative space an unlocked on claymore r2 with ds3 version insane rotation frames. Its sad claymore has less rotation in elden ring
I never realized how much tech there was to Soulsborne pvp. Ex-fighting game player coming into pve Elden Ring and this almost has me wanting to try pvp more. At the very least it'll help contextualize what's happening as a hunter or a cooperator while I chuck fireballs at the scary red man.
Do you think reaction time plays a big role or should I focus more on spacing? It’s hard a lot of the times for me to roll away fast enough before a thrust sword/dagger user hits me because of how quick the attack is. And whenever I try to predict the attack I just get roll caught 😂
Would be great to round these guides out with guides for caster builds. All of this is very meta focused and it's good to be aware of the hidden and not so apparent intricacies of the various meta and melee builds it's fundamentally relevant to. But how do caster builds respond, i.e. how do they better cope with these advanced tactics and situations? Likewise, how do melee builds respond to caster builds (or, if it's not just simply close-the-distance, apply pressure, and exploit dry-FP situations, are all caster builds obsolete in these highly competitive contexts, is it all just meta)? Would really be interested to see your take on this.
I agree, i dont think im the right person to present that information though. I dont fight enough competent casters nor play them, because its too much for my two little braincells to manage the multitude of spells.
@@Rust_BKT Don't be so modest, you'll do just fine if your 2 meagre braincells can manage the meta-complexities on show here. It's just a different sort of challenge (handicap?). And who knows, you might actually enjoy it.
I just started elden ring pvp through low level invasions. I win most of them, but i came across this one dude with taunters tongue on and he DESTROYED me. I could tell he was really good at pvp. I felt like a scrub fighting steelovsky or g9 😂 All of these tips are really helpful and it’s exactly what I’m looking for.
fucking mind blown. since progressing through content, i’ve stopped running in fights because for some reason, dodging would not come out. that or it felt extremely delayed and id ALWAYS get hit. thank god it’s actually a mechanic and not just something unavoidable. thought i was forever doomed to power walk in battle. lol once again, amazing video. THANK YOU!!! 🫡
8:13 Important to mention that weapon hitboxes are usually much larger than the weapon itself, which can also give the impression that you're getting hit by invisible air even if the latency is low. I think this is one reason why some people feel the PVP is shit even on very low latency.
The fine detail of the weapon hitbox i dont think is the major factor that most players are fighting with. But it is true that the hitboxes arent confined to the dimensions of the weapon. They really arent all that crazy big though. I should make a video at some point about that though. Thx for bringing it up
@@Rust_BKT I think it somewhat matters when compared to pve hotboxes which Fromsoft tries to make very accurate. Fromsoft is more ok with weapon hitboxes being inaccurate for the sake of player charitability.
@@Rust_BKT Then you must have also ignored the hitboxes on a lot of weapons, something like the knights greatsword has the largest hitbox of all greatswords and its highly noticeable there's a reason certain weapons work so well, either status or weapon hitbox range and latency around them.
Loved your channel, you are a good teacher and the videos are really well made and edited. If you want a suggestion tho, its really hard to find your content, probably because of the titles, i think if you use something more straight forward it would be easier to find it.
I'm a pretty new player (87 hours played) to Elden Ring, and especially the PvP. I imagine trying to perform all of these techniques on the default button layout is not practical? If so, what kind of button layout would you guys recommend?
Honestly just use whatever youre comfortable with. Plenty of people use default, plenty of people use mouse and keyboard. I just swap my jump to L3, thats about it i think
my favourite whiff punish is by just running at them until they roll once, then i time it to catch their second roll cause Im a kgs main and we are deprived of all whiff punish potential
On a very basic level you can be aggressive in elden ring but it can cost you most players are used to dodging and ability using and parrying but if you can simply master the timing for anything coming at you I mean you can basically do whatever you want unless you’re fighting parry gods they are very annoying
Vortexing is usually referred to as the way you use your weapons moveset to maintain their advantage if the opponent react properly. It usually refers to setups that have the ability to reaction roll catch like fist weapons and great spears.
This video is amazing, it covers so many fundamental mechanics in just 10mins. What's your controller settings though? I noticed you mapped crouch to triangle. Do you play claw grip?
I do, and i think my setup is suboptimal for wavedashing because i cant hold sprint and tap crouch with claw, i have to use my thumb to do both actions. I think backpedals make all of this way easier
Half of this wouldn't exist if the game wasn't poorly designed on the backend and things weren't only peer to peer or if the peer to peer connection ranges were limited, its not even a fundamental mechanic its something the players are forced to work around.
I play with mouse and keyboard and doing quick circular rotations when playing with greatspears is was trully nightmare...until you showed me that you can tap block button and make it easier
i've been trying pvp with dual daggers and it's a lotta fun but kinda miserable sometimes. feels like they have no range and the damage is negligible, is it worth trying to improve with my daggers or will i hit a wall?
I mean, you did decide to choose daggers. Im not sure why youre surprised at their lack of range. I have a video on use of offhand daggers. Id look that up. You might find it useful
i guess what i'm asking is whether or not i'm hopeless against more optimized pvp builds or whether i can improve enough in pure skill to be able to beat these builds using my shite little daggers.@@Rust_BKT
I really appreciate this video a lot it’s going to help loads, but it’s incredibly annoying that a person can’t just be good with the intended mechanics of the game and prevail in PvP. This is the only game I’ve ever played where the Tech is so vastly advantageous that you basically NEED it or there’s no way you’re going to win against anybody at endgame level. Even if they ain’t good they can tech you to death lol The fact that Tech can literally make you untouchable or unpunishable, especially with latency issues is a huge problem Tech is important and a helpful tool, but it shouldn’t be mandatory because of how huge of an advantage it gives you Like this PvP needs a huge rebalance lol, but until then (That day will probably never come lol) I’ll learn the shenanigans as they come out
You dont need tech to be untouchable. If you can react roll every attack and never risk a prediction then theres no reason you should ever lose a match. No tech needed. But understanding the mechanics that exist in the game, intended or not, will help your odds. My goal is to make the knowledge more accessible so that anyone who plays the game can learn from a reliable resource
@@Rust_BKT yeah and that’s why I’mma still learn these. The tech I’m talking about in particular is instant ash of war. No start up animation, couple that with light roll and latency and it’s just ridiculous man. But being able to Instantly use moonveil, Blasphemous blades art, Wave of Destruction etc, with no start up what so ever. There is no prediction. No way of knowing what art they are going to cherry pick from their bag of holding If you’ve run into it, it’s the closest thing to having a gun in Elden ring you can get Idk if it’s tech or a glitch but it’s basically just a W button No reaction time or rolling, prediction anything can help with that. One second they have a spear in hand, then a split second later you’re hit with Moonveil before they even take the weapon out. Stuff like that is why I don’t bother with colosseum or invading I probably should have lead with that lol, but even if I actually found a video or Reddit post on how to do it Myself like…. Where’s the skill or challenge? I wouldn’t be getting better or learning anything. I’d just be blasting people I’d just be bringing a shotty to a sword fight I do see your point and agree with it, but the stuff I mentioned above kinda just defeats the whole purpose of a Souls game Yanno? That little tip you added for fun actually clutched me, s/o!
greatest tutorial video of all time
This is a really comprehensive video. Thanks for all the tips.
Great video man! Your channel was suggested to me the other day and I’ve been going thru learning tons by watching your vids. I’ve been able to pick up on some things watching other channels, but never actually knew what the majority of it was called or how to properly pull it off. I love these games and nothing comes close, for me, to the fun PvP has to offer.
tldr; Thanks for the content, these videos are beyond helpful!!
We all have good days and bad days. The best players focus on their consistancy more than their tricks, you seem to already be in the right mindset, youll get back in the groove
As somone who is transitioning as a sweaty from a different game, and am mediocre at this game so far, I appreciate this video to help me train to be a full on sweaty loser.
Just started getting fluid as reverse backsteps
Seen all these movements from steelovsky. I’d say he’s the best Elden ring TH-camr in terms of skill and knowledge
Jeenine would clap him unfortunately
This is amazing. Thank you for this. I just found your channel and I'm gonna watch all of your pvp tutorials. I look forward to more. I need to ask: is there any Discord/forum where PvP people congregate to talk about tech like these and how to perform it?
Eldenringpvp.net is a site thats ran by members of the community where you can find alot of really valuable research and information, i cant speak highly enough of it
Amazing video. Alot of my gripes with soulsborne pvp is addressed here
So for block cancelling; do you hold block? Or just tap it ? Or do both work?
Now this is content, i will apply this knowledge on my cursed builds
10/10 guide
I had no idea the block cancel worked on classic r1s, I used to play with crouch cancel to get a fast crouch attack. Thank you
I watched this after playing PVP all morning and missing every attack. Now I am hitting Greatsword attacks like it is nothing. 10/10, would watch again.
Great video. Thanks I’m saving this and will watch multiple times.
This stuff is so incredibly complex and subtle... I can barely open the menu sometimes, I don't know how I'm ever going to learn some of this, LOL.
we all start somewhere. but fr, ive died in my menu more times than i can count xD
Exceptionally good video, thank you. Please keep up the very fine work.
Great video. It was informative, well-rounded, and concise. Bravo my friend 🍻
This is helpful as hell
Your a legend for these tips, I had no idea about storing sprint attacks! Would it be possible to do a similar video showing the different things you can do during a delayed roll/sprint?
Glad you found the video helpful. What do you mean exactly by delayed roll/sprint? Im not sure i take your meaning
@@Rust_BKT the small window of time when holding sprint, releasing ends in a delayed roll. I'm not sure if it has a name, but after seeing this video, it made me wonder if it can be explored more
@@eldenringpvpenthusiast1710 oh i get your meaning mow. It would be something to mention as an extension to “dont panic roll”.
(On hit in the case of the scythe it is just frame advantage in general)
I don't mean to deride this is super helpful in general I just personally find it hard to bridge the gap in language and figured I'd offer my thoughts.
@@FadedVIsage naw i appreciate it. Im aware that alot of the language has flexible interpretation, including things like “wavedashing” which generally means something different in other games. But the more accessible the information is, the better, and using good language helps a lot
Ill look up in more detail on this topic and see if i can reword things better in the future
Ayye been waiting for one of these videos to drop. Thanks buddy
“Let’s start with the R2, the centerpiece of any greatsword.”
It was just easier to show negative spacing with that. Id have to slow the video to 30% speed to show the r1 clearly
@@Rust_BKT i dont think you can negative space an unlocked on claymore r2 with ds3 version insane rotation frames. Its sad claymore has less rotation in elden ring
Good old ds3 days :')
@@Rust_BKT xd the quote above is from the “Greatsword tutorial” from ds3 by Jeenine and Gabri, it’s a meme
@@slooed5855 sorry, my casul is showing🙈
Heck yeah. I didnt know you could do any of this. Thanks
Fireballs are cool, and im just sayin, you got that funny little red finger just sitting there in your inventory.. red might look good on you
This is amazing work. Insane detail.
Do you think reaction time plays a big role or should I focus more on spacing? It’s hard a lot of the times for me to roll away fast enough before a thrust sword/dagger user hits me because of how quick the attack is. And whenever I try to predict the attack I just get roll caught 😂
Well, both. Roll discipline is as important as spacing. You really cant focus too hard on either
Rust, do you have a button setup recommendation? Because I feel that crouch and lock default is pretty bad
I loved that tool in DS3 that scanned the ping of you and the invader and kicked either you or the invader out of the game if the ping is over 100ms.
You are my new PvP guide channel, A gud 'ol sub for you!!!
Omg fn god how did I miss this! I got covid again so I ain't nothing to do cept git gud. Thank you, you beautiful bucket
Get well soon
@Rust_Bucket thanks man already am just gotta finish out isolation before I can go train bjj and work again
Insanely good tutorial! Congrats Rust!
The getting backstabbed out of a ravioli attempt is so me

And who knows, you might actually enjoy it.
wow i wish i had this when i was learning ds3
God rekt at coliseum, went here to learn how to PvP, decided to put my foolish ambitions to rest. Great video!
This is wut I ultimately was looking for
literally the answers to all my questions
Nice tryhard skills man)
I try very hard to be average
fucking mind blown. since progressing through content, i’ve stopped running in fights because for some reason, dodging would not come out. that or it felt extremely delayed and id ALWAYS get hit. thank god it’s actually a mechanic and not just something unavoidable. thought i was forever doomed to power walk in battle. lol
once again, amazing video. THANK YOU!!! 🫡
No clue what any of this means but I’m pumped to try it out
8:13 Important to mention that weapon hitboxes are usually much larger than the weapon itself, which can also give the impression that you're getting hit by invisible air even if the latency is low.
I agree that the titles could be a little more… alot more transparent. Its something ive thought about. Good suggestion
Thank you for the video
Im a scrub and i feel really lost to start pvp in ER
Thank you For Making This💪
Woah nice vid man
I'm a pretty new player (87 hours played) to Elden Ring, and especially the PvP.
@@Rust_BKT ah I see. Thank you for the info
good use of steelovsky clips. bro's movement is next level, its his biggest asset imo
Very good video. Had no idea most of these were possible
Love your attitude man gained a sub 🎉
great stuff Rust thank uu
i needed this
great work
6:27 i didnt know block pivot messes with the opponents lock on, WOW
my favourite whiff punish is by just running at them until they roll once, then i time it to catch their second roll cause Im a kgs main and we are deprived of all whiff punish potential
Us as KGS mains: “whats a wiff punish?”
Lower skilled player here, this is cool to know but I ain’t doing it 😂
On a very basic level you can be aggressive in elden ring but it can cost you most players are used to dodging and ability using and parrying but if you can simply master the timing for anything coming at you I mean you can basically do whatever you want unless you’re fighting parry gods they are very annoying
Good sir, i have a question. In the video you mentioned a thing called vortexing, can you explain what is it exactly?
Vortexing is usually referred to as the way you use your weapons moveset to maintain their advantage if the opponent react properly. It usually refers to setups that have the ability to reaction roll catch like fist weapons and great spears.
@@Rust_BKT thank you man
Your content is awesome
Im new to pvp and been practicing the things in this videos for a few days
Thank you so much!
This is excellent. Subscribed.
I play with mouse and keyboard and doing quick circular rotations when playing with greatspears is was trully nightmare...until you showed me that you can tap block button and make it easier
great video man ngl
i've been trying pvp with dual daggers and it's a lotta fun but kinda miserable sometimes. feels like they have no range and the damage is negligible, is it worth trying to improve with my daggers or will i hit a wall?
Even if they ain’t good they can tech you to death lol
The fact that Tech can literally make you untouchable or unpunishable, especially with latency issues is a huge problem
Tech is important and a helpful tool, but it shouldn’t be mandatory because of how huge of an advantage it gives you
Like this PvP needs a huge rebalance lol, but until then (That day will probably never come lol) I’ll learn the shenanigans as they come out
You dont need tech to be untouchable.
No way of knowing what art they are going to cherry pick from their bag of holding
If you’ve run into it, it’s the closest thing to having a gun in Elden ring you can get
Idk if it’s tech or a glitch but it’s basically just a W button
No reaction time or rolling, prediction anything can help with that. One second they have a spear in hand, then a split second later you’re hit with Moonveil before they even take the weapon out. Stuff like that is why I don’t bother with colosseum or invading
I probably should have lead with that lol, but even if I actually found a video or Reddit post on how to do it Myself like…. Where’s the skill or challenge? I wouldn’t be getting better or learning anything. I’d just be blasting people
I’d just be bringing a shotty to a sword fight
I do see your point and agree with it, but the stuff I mentioned above kinda just defeats the whole purpose of a Souls game Yanno? The challenge
Just broken and unfun
@@dragonoflegend8798 glitch, not a tech, and nothing you can do about it if someone decides to pull it out on you. In all my time invading and dueling, ive only had people use genuine glitches on me like 2 different times, not including IGN exploit, which is like, whatever. Theres bad attitudes from all sides of it though. If you pvp youl get tbagged, pointed down, get hate mail, or whatever, but those dont matter. Because every now and then you meet someone whos really cool and you get a new friend… Insert shonin anime quotes or something here.
Great video man really well explained
nice video dude, good knowledge.
you forgot to talk about aim punch tho, that i know is not a tecnique, but is something so annoying as input drops.
Aim punch isnt really relevent in a video about movement and spacing. But its definately a good topic to talk about, and ive brought it up in other videos
Input drops were relevant because they are a result of movement
What are your controls is crouch on triangle and where is action?
Truly an amazing guide 👍
Really solid videos, hope you keep uploading and dive deeper and deeper into the mechanics of the game. There isn't enough in depth educational content out there and these videos are filling that hole up nicely. Especially nice when you talk to the top tier players to get information on the mechanics. Also hoping for a switch to 1080p, 60fps and higher bitrate videos at some point, this channel could become the go-to for this kind of content about Elden Ring.
Yea im on a laptop, making the switch to a desktop will be an expensive investment, but ill get there
Great vid rust keep at it mate
man ive been pretty adamant that keyboard and mouse is perfectly fine for these games, but the more i see about higher-ish level pvp the more i feel like im in an uphill battle without a controller. been playing these games too much with keyboard tho, kind of a sunk cost thing here. im not exactly trying to be a master, would rather not deal with the controller learning curve tbh
Alot of the top players that i know are kbm. Check out og1donut on twitch if you want to see a great example
