Storm Wall can parry the annoying Pocket Sand but I don't know why anyone would every choose to parry arrows or Pocket Sand when they can also just dodge. Dodging is just more reliable and actually moves your character.
@@sobky6378 Some people use the term to sarcastically refer to the Bestial Sling Incantation because it doesn't do that much damage but people who spam it are incredibly annoying. It's like someone throwing a pebble in your face on repeat, or pocket sand. EDIT: Spelling
@lagideath actually, it does insane damage if you level strength and faith both to 40 or more, it does close to lordswarn greatsword damage which is a weak greatsword but the spam is aweful!
Stormwall can also blow away perfumes, like spark aromatic. Itll outright delete whatever dust it hits directly and push away the dust on the edge of the parry

I don't think your weapon catching curvature has much to do with your ability to parry a one handed colossal your size, turn magic into your own magic or parry beyond your physical presence. To invoke realism when talking about souls parry, you probably didn't think about the parry in itself ! I can give you nioh if you want more realistic parries in an otherwise just as unrealistic game
I like using curved sword parry. Very satisfying ^_^ Though I haven't tried PvP yet. I probably should... I think fist and thrusting sword are apparently 1 frame later than it (in 60fps)
Thops's Barrier is better than Carian Retaliation if you intend on parrying multiple spells at the same time. Carian Retaliation can only parry one spell per parry. So if you're under spell spam by a few enemies or if an enemy uses a spell that hits you multiple times, Thops's Barrier can be more advantageous.
That's interesting. I had forgotten about that aspect. I was thinking of mentioning that it doesn't cost MP to use, unlike Carian Retaliation. Nothing like bringing Retaliation to a gun fight & running out of bullets. Don't need to worry about that with Thop's if all you want is to negate magic.

So what people dont tell you is that carian retal cant block holy based projectiles in many cases while thops barrier is better for barrage spels and deflects all forms of non physical projectiles.
If I had to puck between the two, Thops’ barrier is the better ash of war considering the number of multiple hit spells that get spammed in pvp as well. Carian retaliation absorbs a single projectile whereas Thops’ barrier negates any magic projectile that hits it.
Dagger parry is my favorite. It just has that very definitive visible parry window that lets you know exactly when you need to have your opponent hit you
I miss the caestus parry animation from ds3, it felt a lot cooler to slap weapons away than it does to just backhand them. Plus it was a unique animation instead of the normal shield parry, which can also be said for rapiers
I recently made a build that is kudos to chasethebros old ds3 chaos witch build in eldenring and I had a caestus with parry on it and I tried to duel with it and it was so bad I miss ds3 😢
I will always concede that parrying is a bad choice in PVP. No matter how good you are at it, latency and other connection issues will make it not work 60% of the time. That's why competetive duelists rarely do it. But... I'm an invader. And i invade with style. You best believe parries are the most satisfying thing for me and i can't resist.
I will stand by that Thop's Barrier is better than Carian Retaliation. While it doesn't have as good frame data as C.R., it has no FP cost and works repeatedly on spells such as Stars of Ruin. As well, the feeling as you stare down a Moonveil's Transient Moonlight blade and you slam your shield into it, and the turquoise light of Glintstone emanates from your shield as the paper-thin blade, crafted from the stars themselves, flies to your side, digging it's deadly tip into the dirt. And then, you see the shock on the Host's face as their instant-win button has finally met it's match. Ooh hoh oh, that shit's priceless. And also, it has some lore significance too, cus our favorite poor college student Thops made it himself, where as Carian Retaliation was probably discovered by some poindexter in Raya Lucaria.
It also reflects incants, which carian cannot. Thops made a huge discovery about incants and sorceries being 2 sides of the same coin, which is why the spell says it’s worthy of an entire new area of study

Carian retaliation used to scale off of your shield upgrades and the incoming spell damage which was a bit ridiculous(ly fun). Parry one comet and suddenly you have 1600 damage floating over your head.
Carian Retaliation is my personal favorite. Especially now knowing that it has better frame data than the buckler. Fun fact: you can Carian Retaliate your own magic even when its source is a tool/consumable like the Omen Bairns or Glintstone Scraps. Carian Retaliating my own Large Glintstone Scraps is my favorite troll against magic spammers.
Carian Retaliation is the best parry not only for the frames but also because it parries almost any magical projectile be it a Sorcery, Incantation or Ash of War. Most people do not realize you can parry thing like The Black Knife, Bolt of Gransax, Lightning spear, Sacred Blade etc.
Thops is better for spells with multiple rapid fire spells as it can deflect all incoming ones instead of just one same for the arrows. It is mostly a counter to barrage type strategies.
I am and have always been a firm believer in ""no shields." Dagger parry has always been my favorite and now I know why. But curved sword has always been the parry for me for showing off because it is hard to hit.

I prefer the carian retaliation for the simple fact that most pvp or invasions have someone using magic...also, you forgot to showcase the last parry...the tree sentinel shield that bounces magic back
That they had such a beautiful parry/deflect system in Sekiro and then used a static and clunky one in Elden Ring is a mystery to me. I almost bought Elden Ring in the hopes of that very same deflect-posture system, tried it at my brothers and was instantly put off.

I would like thops barrier more if it properly deflected the homing spells like star shower, but as it is I really only use it when helping people with Rennala (You can use it to cover teamates, unlike carian parry)

My first character i spent all my stones on the lordsworn greatsword because it was the first big sword i found and my two braincells went ooga booga, and ooga booga i did but man, having the parrying dagger on the left hand is just magical since the normal attack is so much faster than the normal greatsword attack, i can catch a lot of things with it and then big bonk it with the big bonkingstick. Also some enemies ask to be parried, it is objectively the fastest way to shut some fools up.
I'm surprised they didn't use the assets from Dark Souls 3 for a katana parry. You could sheathe and choose between a parry and weapon skill attack. I'd imagine it wouldn't be hard to implement in the game or even mod it over.
honestly, I've used the thops's barrier spell, and I've hard people call it the worst spell in the game- but it's actually decent for countering spell spam, as you have like a 75% uptime of the barrier effect is you just constantly recast, by holding the button. I've used it to hold that one rancor swarm spell back entirely before

I wish there was a critical damage boost talisman that did the same thing as the hornet ring from ds1 where it used the demon souls animations for them. Theyre so visceral and make you FEEL the damage being inflicted
Don't forget about parrying with the Wakizashi. Can be pretty good for pvp because most people won't be expecting you to parry with it, also can be power wielded with other katana class weapons.

There's a new parrying dagger from DLC called the main-gauche, like the wakizashi, it doesn't have a dagger moveset, but a thrusting sword one, and comes with parry, using this on my sorcery knight, named Swordcerer, paired with the carian sorcery sword (also from DLC) feels so good.
I think you’re forgetting the unique parts about thops barrier, that you’ve also probably already seen by now. For example, the fact that it can deflect incants
Dagger offhand is very very deceptive, combine with some heavier main hand to poise break reliably. Not only it allows to parry, but bleed dagger with 45 arcane procs bleed in like 3-4 hits. Very useful if opponent tries to run around you or quickstep, all hits in dodges will apply bleed anyway, the tracking of dagger light attacks is very very good and the sick damage is there.
I feel like storm wall had room to be so much more useful if you could throw it on the weapons. Since it only displaces physical projectiles which typically do physical damage, the thing shields are designed to block, it’d be better to just block the projectile most of the time. Its very niche use is against projectiles with elemental damage or status buildup, like fire or poison arrows, but that’s a super niche use for an AoW, especially when you could use Golden parry, Carian retaliation, or thop’s barrier.
Carian retaliation is one of the two things that carried me through the Godskin in Radahn's divine tower, the other being rot, so I consider it better than Thops barrier

My favourite parry is Perry the Platypus.
The wakizashi is a dagger but can be powerstanced with katanas. So if you want to be stylish with a dagher for parrying, keep that in mind.

My favorite parry has got to be the Wakizashi. Does good damage on its own and can bleed people fast with the blood affinity.
parrying in botw and totk (zelda) is less powerful that flurry rush, that is the only game i can think of to challenge your mindset
But you can disarm people with style and deflect laser beams in the coolest way possible

Very versatile and can be aplied to high defence/high stability shields like the one Godrick soldiers use.
There's a new parrying dagger from DLC called the main-gauche, like the wakizashi, it doesn't have a dagger moveset, but a thrusting sword one, and comes with parry, using this on my sorcery knight, named Swordcerer, paired with the carian sorcery sword (also from DLC) feels so good.
I think you’re forgetting the unique parts about thops barrier, that you’ve also probably already seen by now. For example, the fact that it can deflect incants
Dagger offhand is very very deceptive, combine with some heavier main hand to poise break reliably.
Not only it allows to parry, but bleed dagger with 45 arcane procs bleed in like 3-4 hits. Very useful if opponent tries to run around you or quickstep, all hits in dodges will apply bleed anyway, the tracking of dagger light attacks is very very good and the sick damage is there.
I think thops' barrier can parry multiple magic projectiles where carian can only block one at a time
this dude pulled up with the medium shield parry straight dogging on it and then just parried the very first attack and smoked that dude out
I feel like storm wall had room to be so much more useful if you could throw it on the weapons. Since it only displaces physical projectiles which typically do physical damage, the thing shields are designed to block, it’d be better to just block the projectile most of the time. Its very niche use is against projectiles with elemental damage or status buildup, like fire or poison arrows, but that’s a super niche use for an AoW, especially when you could use Golden parry, Carian retaliation, or thop’s barrier.
Always loved the curved sword parry all the way back to DS1
Stuff like parry/blocking and kick should be the core ER melee mechanics for all weapons. Games like Chiv and M&B got it right.

The storm parry can deflect gurranq's stone toss and boulder toss attacks 100%
Storm wall can deflect the barrels thrown by the Stormhawks

When using a longsword in conjunction with a shield the Longsword is so much better than the Broadsword just for the pokes alone.

Carian retaliation is one of the two things that carried me through the Godskin in Radahn's divine tower, the other being rot, so I consider it better than Thops barrier

I've had a lot of success using wind wall or whatever (the wind parry) for people throwing bombs and such at me cuz they're a lot slower.

Very cool video, I am definitely going to start using some of these, been trying to beat Malenia with all parrys recently, maybe Golden Parry will help with that.
